longgone Posted July 8, 2009 Posted July 8, 2009 My question ..........I have tried several times to load Win 7 RC on this machine with no luck .. so now I have 3 entries for Win 7 along with the one entry for XP on the boot window .. how do I get rid of those 3 entries ????? Quote
zlim Posted July 8, 2009 Posted July 8, 2009 (edited) Compare your boot.ini to what is listed herehttp://support.microsoft.com/kb/289022Is the computer only running XP? If there are some distros on, then you might have to do something with GRUB - that I'm not sure about.I have 2K and XP on my master hd and my boot.ini looks like this[bootloader]timeout=20default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINNT[operating systems]multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional" /fastdetectmulti(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetectI have PCLinux on the slave hd and it manages the first boot up.If you have 4 lines under [operating systems] I think you need to remove all the windows 7 entries. longgone Posted July 8, 2009 Author Posted July 8, 2009 According to msconfig .. there is only one line under operating systems and it is the Win Xp .. which is the only OS installed on this machine right now so I guess that is good but when I boot up and it goes through the POST and comes to the window .. where I select which OS I want to boot into I have an entry for XP and 3 for Win 7 that is where I want to get rid of the extraneous entries from .. NICK ADSL UK Posted July 8, 2009 Posted July 8, 2009 this tool is very valuable when it comes to multi booting and i would advise that you use it as it will highlight all of your entries and you will then be able to delete any entries that you don't need http://www.vistabootpro.org/another tool that is easy to use is paragons Hard Disk Manager 2009 Suite in which for free you will be able to make a boot disk so you will have full control over your booting and partition's http://www.paragon-software.com/products.htm Quote
Frank Golden Posted July 8, 2009 Posted July 8, 2009 The tool I use is EasyBCD. It works in XP.http://neosmart.net/dl.php?id=1The D/L link is at the bottom of the D/L page above. After install click the Manage Bootloader button and choose the "uninstall the Vista bootloader...." radio button and click Write MBR.If you have a linux install that uses Grub you can then restore the grub menu by using Super Grub.http://linux.softpedia.com/progDownload/Su...nload-8071.htmlD/L the above .iso and burn to a CD to create a bootable disc to restore the grub. Simply edit the file using Notepad. First, you need to remove the "hidden" and/or "read only" file attribute before you make the changes. I'm assuming you already know how to do this.Once you've do so, open boot.ini with Notepad and delete the references to the old installations. If you're not sure which lines to delete, copy & paste the contents here and I can help you. Quote
