Official announcement over at IPB - I think this is a wrong choice myself, but who I am to say.

Along with the upcoming final release of Invision Power Board 1.2, Invision Power Services, Inc. will no longer be offering free technical support services for unregistered users of Invision Power Board.Posting in what are currently the free support forums will be restricted to those in our customer group only. If you are a registered customer of Invision Power Board and wish to post in the suppport forums but are not in our customers group you will be able to enter your Invision Power Board registration key in your profile and the board will automatically upgrade your account.Note: All current members in the customer group will have to be removed for the change to work. If you are removed from the customer group simply login to the client area and obtain your Invision Power Board registration code and insert it into your profile. If you have trouble please email info@invisionpower.com and we will assist you. This change is necessary to allow our staff to focus on providing support service to our paying customers of Invision Power Board. For our free users, who we still value, we are working on enhancing our documentation of Invision Power Board, will be adding informal members-helping-members support, and there are several third-party sites not affiliated with Invision Power Services, Inc. who have expressed interest as an alternate unofficial free support location.Invision Power Board is still available for a free download and we will work over the next few days to bring alternatives to free support for those who have chosen not to register their copy of Invision Power Board. These changes will be implemented when the final version of Invision Power Board 1.2 is released.

Well havnblast... It's all about money…However, compared to UBB.c from InfoPop which is $200 for the first year, and $100 each additional years after, IPB's $60 a year for support and continued upgrades isn’t' that bad.IPB is far superior to UBB.c, and it's still free if you choose to forgo 'official' support. My experience with the IPB support forums was that, most users helped me before any Invision official even set foot in my thread. Most of the time if they did, it was just a confirmation of what someone posted earlier.Oh well... At least it's still free, and they are working to make it better with outstanding updates.

yes true and there is unofficial forums for those that will need help too, they have good software was just hoping they wouldn't go and get greedy

I have to hand it to them… They are taking a big risk (monetary wise) by allowing such a great product to be free. I wouldn't say it's greed... It was just bound to happen. Without paid programmers = No updates.

greedy? ... you need money for everything on this Life, maybe in the next life we can trade-in our vouchers.I spent one day with my IPB and promptly registered, the help & support is second to none. :D

Never really needed their support, been good till RC 2 - finally last night I reverted back to RC 1 and installed a different portal. Seems to be a lot having problems with RC 2 and the IPB portal. I went to the support for questions, but getting answers was like pulling teeth, stopped and help a couple people out that were having problems and made some friends. Hopefully final 1.2 works the bugs out

Well, they are doing a really nice job with the forums. They have to make their money somehow. I figure now that their "offical forums" is gone there will be lots of other places poping up where we can go for help. :D

This is ludicrous. They already had paid support options, with user-to-user support for unregistered users. I have been recommending this software for months, mostly because of that very active and very helpful support forum they have. It's the reason I chose it myself over phpbb2, because asking questions at phpbb's site led nowhere, while questions at IPS's site were always answered by someone. I've thought about regging it several times just because I like it, but I generally know how to run my board and usually know how to fix problems. I'm not paying $60 (or whatever the price is now) for support I rarely ever have need of. It's too steep. This is going to make the software as a whole much less usable because finding out how to do things won't be as easy. I guess I'll have to see whether I want to stay with IPB at my site or not. As I said, I don't usually need help with the software, but occasionally something does stump me, and I'm not paying $60 for the priveledge of asking a question once every two months.

Well I for one find $60 well spent ... I cannot 'fix' things as easily as some.I just had 3 hours 'personal support' and everything is working perfectly. ;)

muckshifter the forum link in my sig should be working, you may have tried it while I was changing things. 3 hours of support?? what in the world happened to take 3 hours of support?? Are you running the Portal of IPB? It's kind of a crazy way they have their Portal done - placing the index.php outside of your forum directory and not being able to have your main forum link go to the portal. You have to change the link to your forum to get to the portal. StrangeI went back to 1.2 RC 1 with IBF Portal 4.0 and it works great again

Quite simply me, myself & I ... :) I moved Hosting to IPBHost, and to say I don't have a clue is an understatement. Watty stayed with me throughout and really, the reason I took so long was asking him silly questions and waiting for a reply, though his replies were quite prompt.Bring me a 'busted' computer and I'll fix it, a busted forum is a different matter. :D

LOL I hear that - well after going back to RC 1, I decided to give RC 2 a retry and presto smooth sailing so far - dumped the portal idea on it.Than my other forum decides to pull a smooth one and had to rebuild it - only lost one table so that wasn't bad.I noticed now I can only get to the memeber help member section for support, they put that into effect already. Good thing volunteers are around, I suppose I should try and volunteer some time there too, not that I know a great deal, but I know basics.

Good news! Free support is still there ... they just moved it down to the "community forums" and made it "official" that the support is "unofficial" if you're not registered ..... which I thought it always was to begin with.
