Tushman Posted December 2, 2008 Posted December 2, 2008 (edited) I've got a neighbor that's running Win98 and he needs something to burn CDs. Of course considering the age of Win98, there's not too many applic. that's compatible with it anymore. I'm considering Deep Burner found at Soft Pedia's website. Has anyone had experience with this? Usually the freeware stuff on Soft Pedia is pretty reliable but I thought I'd check to see if you guys know of any good Win98 compatible software. I don't think he would mind paying $20-$30 for it - as long as it works well and is user friendly. Thanks!I should probably add that this guy knows next to nothing about computers so he needs something simple. I love the user interface on Ashampoo burning studio - I think it would be the easiest to learn for him - but unfortunately it's not compatible with Win98. Edited December 2, 2008 by Tushman Quote
striker Posted December 2, 2008 Posted December 2, 2008 I've used both programs on XP Pro, no problems. My preference however was Deep Burner.ashampoo_burning_studio_6_671_cnt.exe = compatible w/ win98, as was v.6.5 Quote

As for Ashampoo, the latest free version (v6.675) is compatible with only WinNT based systems and Vista. Atleast that is what Cnet Download center shows on their website. Are you sure about v6.671? zlim Posted December 3, 2008 Posted December 3, 2008 I have Deep Burner listed as one I've tried on my 2K system and it didn't work.Others to avoid (not sure if they work on 98)Burn Aware, JetBlue, StarBurner, CDBurner XP Pro, and Silent Night 2004.Silent Night used to work for me. In fact, I liked it enough to donate and then it stopped working, LOL.When I was running 98SE, I used Adaptec v4 (this is pre-Roxio) and it worked very well.I don't know if you can find an old copy on EBay.ImgBurn will also work on 98http://www.imgburn.com/but it won't be the easiest to use because of all the different ways to burn.I've only used it to burn ISOs and data CDs. I've never tried music nor videos. Quote

Are you sure about v6.671?Deep Burner felt working faster and smoother, and its user interface felt more professional. And IIRC I had more options when burning compared to Ashampoo 6.671.I have that Ashampoo 6.671 in my archives, it was a freebie from Chip Germany.( http://www.chip.de/downloads/Vollversion-A...5_28989417.html )After the install one has to register at Ashampoo's site to get a regcode, I did that: no fuss at all. It's still listed at Chip Germany albeit as version 6.5 and in German version. I just can't remember about the language, whether there was an option during install which language to use (I always prefer english) or whether it was after the install in some of its options to switch language. The thing however worked and I never had a coaster. I have to admit tho I only used it to burn a couple of CD's and never to burn a DVD.On the link above you'll see it listed for Win 98,Win 2000, Win Me, Win XP, Windows Vista. On that same link above, at the lower end of the page you'll see this:'Für 10 Euro und damit 30 Euro günstiger als normal, können Sie die Software zudem über die Hersteller-Webseite auf "Ashampoo Burning Studio 7" upgraden.'If you click on that link: Hersteller-Webseite you'll go to Ashampoo's website where you can upgrade the installed version 6.x to version 7 for €7.99, you'll save 30 bucks.I didn't do that, I just wanted to see whether the downloaded version indeed worked and it did. I'd be surprised if it didn't. I wonder if the registration period was time limited. Either way I don't think it will be a problem - I too registered a free version when it was offered back in 2006 or 2007 - can't remember now. I could probably just use the same key if necessary.I have Deep Burner listed as one I've tried on my 2K system and it didn't work.Others to avoid (not sure if they work on 98)Burn Aware, JetBlue, StarBurner, CDBurner XP Pro, and Silent Night 2004.Silent Night used to work for me. I can't believe you donated money & then it stopped working - that definitely stinks! Actually you jogged my memory about Adaptec. I totally forgot that I have that on a CD. When I ordered my first computer in 1998, it came with Win98 and Easy CD pre-installed. I'm almost positive it will install on an HP system even though it came with a Dell. First I'm going to try out the version that Striker provided in his link and it doesn't work for some reason, I'm going to install the Adaptec.I was a die-hard Nero user for long time until I tried Ashampoo about 2 years ago. Until recently, I was switching between Nero and Ashampoo. Since they have released v6.675 and fixed alot of the bugs, I am almost completely converted over to Ashampoo. I like it a lot. zlim Posted December 5, 2008 Posted December 5, 2008 Adaptec came with my HP tower. I liked it and bought a boxed set and installed it on my HP notebook. So it should work on an HP.I'm trying burning software because on my main windows desktop (built for me by someone) no burning software works!!! I had Roxio v6, which I bought. It worked for awhile then it stopped. I got tired of getting frisbees and uninstalling/reinstalling to see if I could get a good burn. Adaptec won't install so I keep trying hoping to find something that works. It's the only computer I own with a DVD burner and can't find anything that works properly besides ImgBUrn. Quote

I had the latest version of 5.5.xxxx before upgrading to version 6 and it was working very reliably. When I switched to XP, I continued to use Nero until someone introduced me to Ashampoo. Quote
zlim Posted December 5, 2008 Posted December 5, 2008 Nero has never worked anywhere for me. I think I had a trial of Nero but then I had to remove it because a piece of hardware I bought to burn LPs to CDs (ADS something) complained and made me uninstall it and install whatever half-baked nero (it wasn't a complete burning package) came with the hardware. Of course that didn't work either. I couldn't install the trial again. I've had several adventures with this computer for a few years but never got anything to work except ImgBurn. Quote

The full version of Nero of course is much better and more reliable. Are you still in need of something good or have you finally settled on ImgBurn? Quote

If it's a newer IDE burner are you using an 80 wire cable and is it set to Master?I got tired of getting frisbees and uninstalling/reinstalling to see if I could get a good burn. What do mean by a 'good burn? Did it complete, was it data or video? Quote
zlim Posted December 5, 2008 Posted December 5, 2008 I don't run XP.I know there is nothing wrong with the two burners in the computer because ImgBurn works on either (in windows) and K3b works in linux.Good burn means it is usable - could be data, music or video. My workaround is to burn all CDs on my notebook in Adaptec. Tushman Posted December 6, 2008 Author Posted December 6, 2008 (edited) Hope it works for you!I had a chance to install the program (Ashampoo) on my neighbors computer the other day. The program is all in German and since I do not read German, I don't know if there was an option to switch to English. Nor did I see an option to install it in another language during the installation process. It's also very possible that if I had registered on their website and entered a key code, the option to switch to English would be available. I looked all over that website and could not see any link of any kind for registering the Ashampoo. It is definitely compatible with Win98 however. I had a used CD with some scrap files and burned a few files just to test it out. It's not a big deal anyway - for my neighbor's usage, he's not going to be missing such a feature. For now he's sticking to his floppy diskettes. Edited December 6, 2008 by Tushman Quote

It's around 6MB.Striker - thanks for the offer. First of all, I have to say my neighbor is a simpleton when it comes to computers. I really like the guy - but when it comes computers, he turns brain dead. It's like I have to explain everything to him 3 or 4 times and even then he doesn't get it sometimes. First let me talk to my neighbor and see just how badly he needs this. I think he was asking more out of curiosity. Besides he can always go out and buy a USB flash drive. Although I have to admit I hate trying to get Win98 systems to recognize flash drives. Sometimes a bit of a struggle.Gus, thanks for the link to the Totally Free Burner - the GUI definitely looks simple. Quote
zlim Posted December 7, 2008 Posted December 7, 2008 I have a universal USB driver for 98SE that makes them all plug and play.Give me a few days to find the file (it fits on a floppy). I installed it on two windows 98SE computers so I didn't need to go through the hassle of trying to install a different driver for every brand of USB stick plugged into the computer. Quote
