ozgeek Posted November 5, 2008 Posted November 5, 2008 I have one computer running windows XP - up-to-date with updates. I have two computers with Vista that can see and access the XP 'puter. However, the XP 'puter doesn't see the vista computers. I've tried the usual rebooting and checking of wizards to no avail. Can anyone suggest anything that's worked for them. Thanks, Quote
ozgeek Posted November 5, 2008 Author Posted November 5, 2008 I found the answer, eventually. I have LiveOne Care on my computer and it needed tweaking on XP to show the vista computers. Quote

I've had personal experience with MS LiveOne care. It is one POS software and completely worthless in its efficacy. There are better alternatives. Edited November 5, 2008 by Tushman Quote

Tushman Posted November 6, 2008 Posted November 6, 2008 Yes, I will choose a different product when my year has finished. What would your recommendation be Tushman? For antivirus protection, NOD32 and Kaspersky are at the top of my list. Norton 2009 (yes I know I said the forbidden 'N' for) has been getting a lot of good reviews and Symantec has truly done an amazing turn around with this software. All the claims about it (as far as being fast and non-bloated) are true - I can attest to that myself having installed it on a customer's laptop recently. Despite that, I will stick to my NOD32 and Kaspersky as my favorite two choices. For antispyware, Webroot spysweeper is really good. Of course, all the others that we know about (e.g. Spybot and A-squared) are still good choices for freeware stuff. Quote
Tushman Posted November 6, 2008 Posted November 6, 2008 You're welcome Ozgeek. And yes Temmu, Norton antivirus 2009 has improved so dramatically that I was almost at a loss for words. Simply amazing. Symantec has turned out one horrible POS security software for the past 6 years or so - so yes I remain a tad bit skeptical. Besides, just seeing 1 version is too early I feel. If the improvements continue with the 2010 version, then I will become more enthused about recommending Norton again. As for NOD32, I love the lightweight efficiency and the fact that it doesn't entrench itself into the OS like some others -- but lately I have become somewhat disappointed with the overall detection rate ability. A few weeks ago, I scanned a hard drive infected with viruses/trojans and while NOD32 managed to detect and remove 6, I scanned it again with Kaspersky just to be sure and it found 2 more viruses! Yes I realize that no one antivirus solution is perfect, and yes, in the field experience has taught me to never rely on one sole program to catch everything.... I was just a bit disappointed (and surprised) that NOD32 missed the other 2.The real kicker here is that NOD32 was updated with the latest definitions but Kaspersky had not been updated since July 08. goretsky Posted November 7, 2008 Posted November 7, 2008 Hello,Did you contact ESET to find out why they were not detected or to submit copies of the missed files?Regards,Aryeh Goretsky Quote
Tushman Posted November 7, 2008 Posted November 7, 2008 Hello,Did you contact ESET to find out why they were not detected or to submit copies of the missed files?Regards,Aryeh GoretskyI couldn't submit copies of the missed files because Kaspersky detected and removed them. As for the name of the virus/trojan itself, I cannot remember it now for I was in a hurry and trying to do 2 things at once. The infected system will have to be reformatted anyway. I was just over at her place and inspected the laptop again. I noticed there were trojans running in the background so it appears that neither Kaspersky and NOD32 were 100% effective in their clean up. I might run a rootkit detector and see if it turns up anything. Quote
zlim Posted November 8, 2008 Posted November 8, 2008 Run malwarebytes!I had someone call me with a problem. I ran malwarebytes and it picked up 25 trojans/rootkits/other nasties. It could clean all but 3 or 4 and said it would do it on a reboot. It did. I was extremely impressed. She hasn't contacted me in 2 weeks so I suspect it did the job correctly. Quote

I remember back in Aug/Sept timeframe, the Antivirus 2009 virus was running around rampant giving a lot of people headaches. I heard that Malware Bytes was very successful in removing it. Before I reformat the laptop, I'm going to scan it with Malware bytes to satisfy my curiosity and test it's effectiveness.Recently, her credit card info was stolen and the scum bags racked up tons of fraudulent charges on her card. So I am not taking chances on Malware bytes (or kaspersky for that matter) to catch everything. It will definitely put her mind at rest (as well as mine) after I reformat the hard drive. I'll report my findings after this weekend. Edited November 8, 2008 by Tushman Quote

Although it will be interesting to see if MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware catches some more nasties before you start fresh . Quote
tommyj12 Posted November 9, 2008 Posted November 9, 2008 Norton 2009 is awesome. Can't say enough good things about it. Quote
