tommyj12 Posted October 13, 2008 Posted October 13, 2008 My sister teaches preschool at a church and her laptop is the only computer the family has. I clean up XP every time I am over there, but last night I found cookies to many porn sites in the cache. I know my 12 yr old nephew did it, and I need to stop him.It would be tragic if a porn pop up were to rear while she was using using it at work, and the whole family is click happy anyways. I need something lite on resources as the specs are really low on the machine. So please help me. Quote
sunrat Posted October 13, 2008 Posted October 13, 2008 You can download a HOSTS file containing collected addresses to block. It will divert your browser to look on your local machine (where it won't find it of course) for sites that are on the list. Most available hosts files are aimed at blocking ads. One that says it targets porn sites is http://www.hostsfile.org/hosts.htmlOr find an old Pentium 200 pc for your son and ban him from the laptop. Quote
tommyj12 Posted October 14, 2008 Author Posted October 14, 2008 Its my nephew, my sisters son, but I was suggested K9 by a friend and I am gonna try that. I offered my sister to give the kids their own desktop with linux on it of course, so they could use it instead of her lappy. She thinks she can have more control over the laptop thou. I have been working on it for the last 2 hours, and I may have wasted all that time as I know it needs to be reformatted and fresh install done. I am also gonna get her to let me upgrade the ram, I forgot how slow 5m of ram really was. Quote
Tushman Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 I am also gonna get her to let me upgrade the ram, I forgot how slow 5m of ram really was. What kind of computer has only 5m of RAM? What is the m for? Did you mean to say megabytes? Quote
striker Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 Tommy, have a look at http://www.wilderssecurity.com/index.php Quote
zlim Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 The put something on public computers so that when the computer is rebooted, it goes back to the way it was at the beginning of the day. Maybe that's what is needed. I think it is called Deep Freeze. http://www.faronics.com/Your sister could have the only admin account on the computer. All the other click-happy users get a limited account with deep freeze running. Note: I'm not sure if that is doable but it seems like it might be a possible solution. Quote
tommyj12 Posted October 14, 2008 Author Posted October 14, 2008 Thanks for the suggestions and tip guys, I looked into a lot of programs, most were not free, and cost over $60. I installed K9 and it is working great, and I will get an email if he tries to guess the password. I tried to go to several porn sites and it blocked them all. Now if I can just make sure he never gets to access my sisters admin account I should be fine. I also just ordered 2 gigs of ram, so after I get t I am gonna reformat and do a fresh install. Should be like a almost new machine after I am done. Quote
rbdietz Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 I was suggested K9 by a friend and I am gonna try that.Hadn't heard of K9 Web Protection until now.Looks interesting. Please let us know how it works out. Quote
Tushman Posted October 15, 2008 Posted October 15, 2008 SandboxieI've heard of Sandbox IE before.... does it actually have a website (URL) filtering capability? Quote
sunrat Posted October 15, 2008 Posted October 15, 2008 Sandboxie sets up a secure environment for programs to run in. You can run a browser in it and surf anywhere, but all data will not remain on the pc after you close it. So your nephew could surf all those naughty sites on the laptop and leave no trace.Good for your laptop security, but not good for his moral development. Depends whether you wish to allow him to surf anywhere or not. Sandboxie could be used with a filter as well, just in case something slips through. Quote
Tushman Posted October 15, 2008 Posted October 15, 2008 (edited) Aaa-ha... ½g. I think I pulled about .03Gs just laughing. LOL.I've heard of "homemade" abbreviations before, but that one was sort of dumb eh? When did we get so lazy as a society that typing a few extra letters became so difficult? tommyj12 Posted October 15, 2008 Author Posted October 15, 2008 If I do reformat I may use sandboxie to keep from having to remove toolbars, and all kinds of media players every time I am asked to "fix" it. I can't seem to get them to understand that they have every codec, and media player they need installed, and no that site isn't being helpful by providing a download so you can view the videos. Quote

Firefox and adblock plus will help with that. Stops those popus from being presented in the first place. Quote
tommyj12 Posted October 15, 2008 Author Posted October 15, 2008 It is installed, but it won't help if they don't use it. I just this month got her to stop using aol, and removed it yesterday. Quote
zlim Posted October 16, 2008 Posted October 16, 2008 just this month got her to stop using aol progress comes in baby steps! My husband has never seen IE so he doesn't know how to use it - thank goodness. He never went on the internet so when he decided he wanted to learn how, I just taught him to press the FF icon. I set up two tabs to open: his email and Roots Web so he is good to go. Quote
goretsky Posted October 16, 2008 Posted October 16, 2008 Hello,If your goal is to prevent the computer from being changed, have you considered installing Microsoft SteadyState? It is similar to Faronics product, but is free.Regards,Aryeh Goretsky Quote
Ed_P Posted October 19, 2008 Posted October 19, 2008 Its my nephew, my sisters son,Are you sure it isn't his daddy? Or some of his friends? It's very easy to get embarassing souvenirs left on a hd just by doing searches for innocent stuff. Cookie ads especially. Search the IE cache to see what type of images show up before, he may not be as bad as you think. Quote
tommyj12 Posted October 20, 2008 Author Posted October 20, 2008 Well there were several that were from actual porn sites, yea it could have been his dad or a friend. I told my sister, and she said his father was gonna talk to him about it. I run cc cleaner every time I go over, so they were not there two weeks prior. These were not in the IE cache, but FF, and I have noscript and adblock installed. So I am pretty sure it was intentional, as they had to manually enable the sites scripts in noscript. Quote
goretsky Posted October 22, 2008 Posted October 22, 2008 Hello,I have not tested it with malware, but I would imagine it depends on the malware. Something that is already present on the system is unlikely to be affected by SteadyState, and any malware that ran in the Windows session would perform normal activity, it just would not remain persistent after a reboot.Regards,Aryeh Goretsky Quote
Robert Posted October 22, 2008 Posted October 22, 2008 Another option is setting up a free account with OpenDNS and let them do the blocking. To use it you setup your computer or router to use their DNS servers. Then log into your account there and tell it to block links to porn sites. Next download their OpenDNS updater program which will update them if your IP changes (I run this program on a computer downstairs that's always on so I don't have to worry about it).http://www.opendns.com/smb/solutions/filtering/ Quote
