I don't know anything about the version that you are writing about, but if you can startup a terminal, as "root", you can add:"user add kamicota". And when it tells you that the new user has been ceated, still as "root", you can type: "passwd kamicota" > enter, and it will ask you for the new password, and them to repeat the new password. You can then type as "root": su kamicota. You will then be operating as a user with no special administrative rights. If you want to add some administrative super user privileges, then as root, you will have to create them for kamicota as "root". Doesn't your installation have a control panel with an administrative section? As "root" you could go the GUI way of doing things, and administer away your needs without needing to use a terminal console to do it. The choice is yours!Cheers

Try using useradd instead, that might work for you. You might be able to find the command in the /bin directory.

I think "there was an error during install" says it all . . . . . the install was not complete so is not usable. My advice: install the good old PCLos 2007 . . . . . forget about the updates because we soon hope to see 2008 and you will be okay up to then.:) Bruno

I remember when you had that hardware brand new: nothing would install on it ( because the brand new hardware was not supported at that time ) . . . only MDV and after a few weeks the new PCLos 2007 were willing to play nice on that computer.Maybe the remaster ( PCe17os ) you were using was based on older hardware and that is why it could not finish the install. If something you REALLY need the PCLos 2008 :DB) Bruno

Yep BrunoPCe17OS did allow me to login as root so what part of the install went wayward beats me :) DEFINITELY need the PCLinuxOS 2008 but will see what the NEW 2007 gives on the Livecd - IF it hangs up again at MCP61 will give MiniMe a trySo WE be STILL in FINGERS CROSSED mode for 2007 - still 5mins for downloadCheers for yearsColin

If all fails you can still go to Mandriva 2008.1 Spring edition . . . it has all the latest drivers you would need for that computer. But first try your luck on PCLos ;)B) Bruno

Hi, Based on your past history, from what I've seen, you like to try different things. Correct? Well, because of circumstances, and because I wanted to delve in the 64-bit world, I ended up with 64-bit Sabayon Linux. And now, I'm not sorry that I did. This "Gentoo" extract is very complete, with tons of applications that can be downloaded and installed either from the Gentoo site, or from the Sabayon's site. And they all work out of the box! And there's no compilation that needs to be done. The system takes care of itself. Everyday, new updates keeps on coming in, so the system is constantly evolving. It's just like not having to install another "new" version, every so often. You can install your applications, using a graphical installation manager, or Gentoo's "emerge" text command, or Sabayon's "equo" text command. You can also use Gentoo's "Portage" application and compile your applications from scratch, tailor-made just for your system. The installer does the whole job. Just like Debian, there is a pletora of applications to choose from. I installed it by using the "live" DVD version. I was happy with what I saw, and installed it on my hard drive. It all worked from the start! For you, there's a 32-bit version that available, in a "live DVD", or mini CD, or for a USB Flash Drive. So you have many choices. This newest version of Sabayon just came out a few weeks ago. A lot of attention was paid to details when they put it together. The different desktops just rotate on a cube box, when you select a certain desktop. It automatically installed the 64-bit NVIDIA application, and found and setup most of my perepherals. If you are adventurous and want to try something different, simply give it a try!Cheers!

I think the MDV Live version uses auto-login for the user . . . no worries it will not login that way for root.Sooo . . . . finally you found a distro that is happy on your hardware from the first minute, congrats ! B) Bruno

Now now Bruno no need to plug MDV B) Yet the straight to KDE without a log in gives a few palpitations Still have to set the optimum resolution to 128x1024 which the dell monitor suggests is best but found all is hunk dory FOR NOW Cheers for yearsColin

Just don't mess with it Colin . . . and let us hope PCLos 2008 will be released soon so you can switch over to the distro you are most accustomed to.B) Bruno
