I would need an extended partition somehow, but how do I do that? Gparted won't let me create an extended partition though I have unallocated disk space for it.L
Manitoban
laan, I do not store music, but I do pictures. I have an external usb hard drive for the purpose. The whole 80 Gbytes is divided and sub-divided into different directories for types and sources of pictures. It is independent of any computer or installation. Just plug it in or out as required. To guard against disk failure, I make a cd copies. Is this possible solution for you?Bill
mlangdn
Currently I have 4 primaries so how to do with the 5th? I would need an extended partition somehow, but how do I do that? Gparted won't let me create an extended partition though I have unallocated disk space for it.LThere is a limit of four primary partitions on a hard drive. An extended partition is a primary partition, but it can have I think 15 logical partitons for sata, and up to 63 for ide.To do this, you would have to delete a partition, like hda 4, then create an extended partition from that space. You can also include all the rest of the unallocated space. Partition 4 is not that large, but I do not know how much unallocated space is left. I do like the idea of an external drive, just for music.
laan97ac
Hi all,The external drive is a great idea, but I carry my laptop around to different places and I already have enough to trek around so the "local" solution is better for me. I have an external USB HD for backups though.I have 20GB of unallocated space for the music partitionLaan
laan97ac
Hi allok now the system is cleaned up - ready for reinstall. I think Mandriva 2008 will be the one to try - a safe choice I know and not too exotic, but let's see.I want to delete hda4 entirely - previously that was my /home and then turn it into a partition holding two extended partitions - one for /home and one for /music.How to do that? And then, next time I reinstall, and say yes to formatting /home partition (extended) will it then know to exclude /music? Bruno
Hi LaanI suppose hda4 was the last partition on that disk ?? And Mandriva / will be on hda3 ? . . . So you will create hda4 as extended and make 2 logical partitions hda5 and hda6.You will then assign hda5 to /home and hda6 to /home/laan/music.Now, since /home/laan/music is on a separate partitions at the next install ( 2009 ) you will tell the installer fo format hda3 ( / ) . . . and not format hda5 and hda6 . . . That way you will not loose your music ( hda6 ) or other personal files ( hda5 ) Bruno
laan97ac
right now it looks like this - pre install:hda 1 - winhda 2 /hda 3 swaphda 4 /homeSo yes hda 4 is the last primary partitionBut is there any reason to have swap in a separate primary? And how to do it? I have used Gparted before which I am comfortable with but what do I actually do?If I delete hda 4 and ask Gparted to create a new partition I guess it will give me the option then? right now it looks like this - pre install:hda 1 - winhda 2 /hda 3 swaphda 4 /homeSo yes hda 4 is the last primary partitionBut is there any reason to have swap in a separate primary? And how to do it? mlangdn
Swap can reside on a logical partition from the extended partition. That's where my swap is located. If you are going to re-install anyway, I would delete everything except the first primary partition. Make the second partition extended, then put in all the logicals you need. For swap, it does not matter if its the first logical, or the last. laan97ac
I am wiping everything except the first partition (Win XP) so I might as well clean up thoroughlyI also thought not having the swap thing take up a full primary but having it on a logical
Bruno
but having it on a logical Makes sense . . . go for it. Bruno
laan97ac
ok got the partitioning done - works wellBut Mandriva is just not me - it makes my system slow, seems to be full of small simple bugs etc. So Now I took a different route: I know ubuntu runs well on my system and all I want on top of that is konqueror and amarok. So the answer must be kubuntu for a start.Just installed and looks/feels much better alreadythanx
réjean
Good for you laan97ac !Indeed what counts at the end of the day is to have the machine we like and that works well with our hardwares. It's the only way to enjoy Linux. That's why there are so many different flavours ( distros ).

laan97ac
Any Kubuntu experts around?need to get skype to run on the machine, and it is in the repositories somewhere, but apparently not in the ones I have active - though it is all of them i think(K)ubuntu has this universe, multiverse repositories and I have them all active but skype is not there? Bruno
Any Kubuntu experts around? I think there was a special skype repository for (k)ubuntu . . . . Anyway I PM-ed our resident Ubuntu expert to have a look in this thread, he will be in soon, no worries. Bruno

Next do "sudo apt-get update" and you will see skype in your package manager ready to install. Bruno
