Linux not seeing ESSID with low signal

I do not understand it, I can see and connect to a ESSID in windows but linux either does not see the ESSID or will not connect it. Mind you the signal is low. I have a intel 3945 which is a common card and I have used both the ipw3945 and the iwl3945 driver. For instance, I am connected to a ESSID using windows right now but if I reboot using PCLinuxOS 2007 or Slackware 12.0 I cannot see or connect to the ESSID. In windows I can use either the Intel connection program or the windows one and I have no problem besides maybe the speed. What's the deal? I am using Intel Linux drivers, I do not understand it. I am beginning to think that the Linux driver cannot see ESSIDs with a low signal. Any ideals? Thanks
