HOWTO Configure media sources and install programs (Thunderbird) in Mandriva 2008Open the Mandriva Control Center:First, choose "Distribution Sources" (when you do this for the first time, things might look a bit different from the below screen shots... but the "drill" is the same):Yes:Next, you choose the mirror location... when in doubt, Netherlands and nluug is a splendid choice. ( NOTE: Mirror is out of sync please choose ftp.free.fr ) Now you should have repositories pretty much like in the below pic (your numbering'll most likely go from 0-1 to 0-12):What was the... ah, Thunderbird! Back to control center main menu, and "Manage Software":Either serch for "Thunderbird" (the package is called "mozilla-thunderbird") or find it "manually"; Networking -> Mail. "Tick" the box... the green ball appears. Click "Apply" to start download/install.That's it, really. You'll find Thunderbird in Start Menu in "Internet". Oh: when you install software this way, every single program you install will be kept up-to-date automatically.

HOWTO configure display resolution (1280x800) in Mandriva 2008 running in VirtualBoxHit the "Configure your computer" icon (see above)... root password prompt:Choose "Hardware", and, once in there, "Set up the graphical server":First, let's configure "Monitor": Choose (unlike I ) "Flat panel 1280x800":Next, resolution... Choose "24 bits", hit the "resolution bar" (yours saying, "1024x768")... goes something like:Which resolution to choose? None of the above; I would choose the "native" resolution, 1280x800, and run Mandriva "Full screen" without any "VBox controls" visible. When you start "VirtualMandy", hit <right Ctrl> + <F> to go full screen, and whenver you want to have access to controls while using your Mandy, hit <right ctrl> + <Home>. To get 1280x800, in the above list, choose "Other"... there you have it:Bach in the "Graphical Server Main Menu" (your settings should now be "Flat Panel, 1280x800" and "1280x800, 24bpp"), choose "Test". If everything is OK, you'll see rather a psychedelic full screen display of all the colours of a rainbow. In that case, accept new settings.Exit the Control center. Log out. Log back in. New resolution should now be in use.

i sure do like this virtualbox (VB) program. i guess it's called an emulator. i'm really fascinated with running multiple operating systems and since discovering this outstanding program i've been in emulation heaven. as you can see from these screenshots i have quite a few os's installed. i'm running VB on mandriva linux 2007.1 which makes this my host os. each of the other distros are called guests and run in a "virtual machine". HOWTO install Mandriva One 2008 in VirtualBox (part 1)So we have a Windows install ( the host ), we will install Vitualization software and load Mandriva Linux as guestWhat you need:- Mandrive One 2008, shaken, not stirred:http://www.mandriva.com/en/download.html- VirtualBox (here for "normal", 32-bit Windows):http://www.virtualbox.org/download/1.5.0/V...5.0_Win_x86.msiOff we go, then:During the installation of VirtualBox, don’t be surprised if you get a few “are you sure you want to do this?” messages. Just click Continue Anyway when they pop up.Launch VirtualBox and click the New button.OK... I stole the above pic from the net... let's move to my pics:Give your virtual machine a name... and choose "Linux 2.6" for "OS type":Next, choose how much RAM you are willing to give for "the guest"... you can change this (and pretty much every other setting) later:Next, you're going to create the "virtual hard disk". Choose "New":Click "Next":Next: Choose "Dynamically expanding image":Next, you choose the location and (maximum) size of your virtual HD. Pay attention here: the "Select" button is the yellowish folder icon. If the "default" location isn't kosher, use it to navigate to a location of your choice. Use the slider to change size... I'd choose something between 10-15 GB.Time to confirm (or change) your virtual HD settings:Choose "Next":

Me, I don't like to burn disks unless I absolutely have to, so I use the .iso image on my HD instead:Almost ready for OS install... you might want to enable "Audio" and "USB" before installing the guest OS, though:Ready?
