Round two- Slackware=1 Adam=0.Deselected emacs, and re-running setup. It has gone past it, so I think something got jumbled in the burn of the DVD.Adam

Success! Slackware is installed!I'm noticing some issues that will have to be worked through. More to follow on each of these:1. No GNOME yet.2. No Network Manager- I need it, because this is a laptop.3. Screen resolution is not correct.Adam:)

OK, from what I can see, Dropline GNOME is not available for Slack 12. Are there any alternative sources? Or am I looking at a compilation marathon?Adam

It's good to see you hanging in there Adam. All of my attempts at slack were humbling to say the least. I am sure Bruno or Eric can put you on track with gnome. Yuck :D Anyhow I am sure you have your reasons for licking it. :)

Thanks Tommy. I've run into another problem. I can't get online with ethernet! I've run netconfig, but I cannot ping or make any connections to the Internet.Any help with this one? I've found this: http://www.mkanet.de/data/slackbot/0.6_sat...0.6-saturn.html which looks like it can do the compilation, but I need a net connection to do the downloading and compilation.AdamPS- Why are the ifup and ifdown commands not working? I am getting command not found.PPS- I am looking in /etc, and not seeing anything related to my ethernet port. I'm gonna need a bit of help on this one. It's getting late here, so I'll pick it up again tomorrow afternoon. Any links or info would be helpful, though.

Maybe you could try this (a "Cousin Vector" problem/solution)... post #7 by cybormoron:http://forums.scotsnewsletter.com/index.ph...st&p=228762

i did have a major problem with it at first. it didn't have internet connection. the solution was to start the dhcpcd daemon. vector installs the daemon but doesn't start it at boot so you may need to start it manually. don't know how to configure it to start on boot or configure any other settings should it be necessary. maybe one of the more knowledgeable guys can explain how. this worked for me. as root do
dhcpcd eth0

Hi AdamTo restart the internet connection you can give the command "/etc/rc.d/rc.inet1 restart" ( ifup and ifdown do not work in Slackware )The file to tweak is the "/etc/rc.d/rc.inet1.conf" give it the IP and netmask for eth0 and the gateway just under the eth0-1-2-3 section ( or run "netconfig" )The file to check if you still can not connect ( even after running netconfig ) is the /etc/resolv.conf . . . . that file often is the reason why "ifconfig" shows output pretending you are "UP" and still you can not get on the internet.:D Bruno

Sadly, the Gnome developers for Gnome in Slackware are a bit behind. Neither Gware nor Freerock have version out for Slack 12 yet. I'd have my money on Dropline coming out with one first, though.

Yeah, it seems to have the largest community. I am contemplating compiling, but that's going to involve a significant amount of time on my part, although there would be a high level of satisfaction from a successful compilation marathon.Adam

Could someone post their working rc.inet1.conf?I've run netconfig a few times, and I am really confused as to why the values do not appear to "stick."Adam

Hi AdamDo you want the static IP or the DHCP version ??BTW: Have a look at your /etc/resolv.conf . . most likely the problem is there and not in the rc.inet1.conf ;):D Bruno

Mine does not have the ip addresses in it, but has dhcp set to yes or true. The problem is that I do not have access to control the router. This is one provided by the barracks for the residents.I'm wondering if the module for eth0 is not being loaded for some reason.....Adam

And the resolv.conf for that system:
# Generated by dhcpcd for interface eth0nameserver 10.0.2.3
NOTE: My router gives IP addresses from 10.0.0.1 to 10.0.2.255 . . so not the usual numbers Netgear and D-link routers give.Usually the nameserver is 10.0.0.138 . . . the same IP as the net-interface I configure the router with . . . the same as the GatewayI bet your problem is the resolv.conf.You can restart the network with
# /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1 restart

Yep, mine matches your DHCP one, Bruno. I thought it looked ok.....I think there is someing much more wrong here. I did not have the laptop hooked to the router during the install..... Adam

Either do a quick re-install . . . ( 15 minutes ) . . . or check the resolv.conf again ( I added a few remarks to my last post ):D Bruno

resolv.conf is fine. It has been left exactly as I edited it.....Running lsmod does not show me any module (from my limited knowledge) that are being loaded for the eth0 interface. what module is used by an Intel PRO/100 controller?Adam

My advice: do a re-install . . it will be quicker then googling the net for answers what has to be configured and loaded as module.Really 15 minutes is all it takes . . . . :D Bruno

Any help with this one? I've found this: http://www.mkanet.de/data/slackbot/0.6_sat...0.6-saturn.html which looks like it can do the compilation, but I need a net connection to do the downloading and compilation.
Thanks, Adam. :D screenshotma3.th.pngI became disillusioned with DropLineGnome (Slack 11.0), when there have been no updates for over a month. :'( That said, "slackbot" is a purer Gnome (2.18.2); it says that it is experimental on Slack 12.0, but it installed great (took around 3 hours to compile the entire Gnome packages), I have not had anything I would call a problem, and as long as you follow the exacting directions, you'll be fine ... i'm very pleased! Thanks, again. :(

OK.I have a fresh disc, double-checked, that i know is good. I reinstalled, and this time, it did not freeze up during the install of emacs. I am reasonably certain that the disc is good.I am getting the exact same indications. I have a link light on the ethernet port. however I cannot ping an IP address or a URL. I look at the output of ifconfig, and no eth0 is listed, only local loopback. I re-ran netconfig, which seems to work, but I still cannot get online. The eepro100 kernel module is not being loaded upon bootup, so I doubt the system even knows that there is an ethernet port there, despite being listed when I run lspci. I think I basically need to manually configure this puppy, but simply do not know how.Adam

HI Adam . . . If ifconfig does not show any output at all on eth0 it could be indeed that the module is not loaded, "modprobe eeprom" should do the trick. All the info you need after that for the connection is here: http://www.slackware.com/config/network.php and http://www.slackbook.org/html/book.html#NE...K-CONFIGURATIONI wonder, did previous Slackware ( 11.0 ) give you trouble too ?:D BrunoPS: One little note about the OpenDNS: if your modem ( dial-up, cable or adsl ) is directly connected to the computer you can either use the DNS of your ISP or OpenDNS. But if you are connected to a router you have to use the DNS of the router in the /etc/reslov.conf

OK,I been back and forth six different ways with this. I've edited rc.inet1.conf, resolv.conf, and rc.modules. I've also rebooted a couple times. At this point, eth0 dies not exist on this system. The card is still being detected by the kernel as evidenced by the output of lspci, but eth0 is not being created.

dmesg | grep intel

only shows this:

intel_rng: FWH not detected

That's the closest i've gotten to an error, and that could be any number of intel goodies in the laptop.I am running out of ideas........Adam
