Me bad, there's still 3 days before it is available for download. But why the pre-announcement today?

Burned it and tried it on my newer notebook, thinking that noacpi added as a boot option would let me at least see it. No good.Very few distros will get to first base on this notebook and I have no idea why. PCLinux runs, an earlier Kubuntu runs but I could never get it to see my printer and two versions of Mepis run but when I install the latest, I have no internet connection. Can anyone clue me in as to what choices I should try to not end up at a black screen with a blinking white cursor?I did see the orange/brown Ubuntu loading for a bit before the black screen kicked in.(I don't think it's a bad burn but I will try it on my desktop just to confirm that it can work).~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~After doing something else, I just had a thought...this notebook only has 256MB of RAM. Maybe I'm having problems because the newer distros add more bells and whistles and my RAM might not be sufficient. I was planning to upgrade.Well the burn was good because this post is from my desktop on Ubuntu.

With only 256 MB of Ram did you get the alternative version? That is the one for machines with 256 Mb or less of ram..Mel B)

Can you point me to the alternate version, please.
Hello LizGo to the URL below and choose the type also check the box for the alternative distro located just below the Start Download Button. It says ( Check here if you need the alternate desktop cd suited for computers with less than 256MB of RAM)Mel  Click here for web page or here http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download

Liz,Please note that the *buntu "alternate" disks are "install only". You could download Xubuntu "Desktop CD" and try it "live".

To run the [Xubuntu] Desktop CD (LiveCD + Install CD), you need 128 MB RAM to run or 192 MB RAM to install. The Alternate Install CD only required you to have 64 MB RAM.

I just ordered 3 CD's of Feisty. 4-6 weeks delivery will be plenty fast enough for me. I'm keeping busy learning Linux and Ubuntu on Dapper. Also have a download of Edgy, which successfully finds my USB wireless dongle out of the box. :thumbsup:Not surprising Ubuntu has been drawing a lot of praise lately. They have worked hard on the GUI front ends and a lot of other stuff, made it real easy for new users to get going. It does have a lot of the feel of Windows. It's real good at finding my hardware.I was particularly delighted with the Gnome partition manager, early on. A good graphical tool, as easy as any I've used to date. Another good find for me was gLabels. A slick little label printing program, makes most any kind including for CD's, also business cards. :thumbsup:I went and got myself a Linux User number this week. Next week, the T shirt. Hey, seriously- I'd like to get some decals with the Ubuntu logo to stick on my van. Heh! :) My early times learning my way around Ubuntu have been made a lot easier due to this forum. The help has been great! As I develop a better feel for how Linux distros are put together, I'll try some others. I'm going to do OK learning command line style Linux, I think. Just go slow and steady, ask a lot of questions, dig through articles and manuals and such, and it should eventually come together for me.

Thanks Mel and Urmas. I definitely need something live. I'll look at all the links and see what I can find. (I got a fresh stack of 100CDs so I'm ready to burn. :) )If I can't find anything, I'll just wait for PCLinux ummm 2008  The notebook has Big Daddy on it but since I've disabled boot magic, I can't get to it other than running live. I'm waiting for a new version then I'll remove partition magic/boot magic and let linux handle the MBR.

I'm sloooowly downloading Xubuntu. (Good things are worth waiting for  ) I got lots of zero byte downloads that said done but every few minutes I'd click the download link and eventually I grabbed a slot. I'm now up to 44%.How much RAM is required if you go the install route instead of the Live CD?I have my PCLinux withering away from non-use on the notebook so I can install something peppier for the time being - if I can get Xubuntu live to work properly.

Hi LizAccording to This page you need:

To run the Desktop CD at least 128 megabytes of RAM is required. To use the installed system at least 64 megabytes of RAM is required but 128 is recommended. At least 1.4 gigabytes of disk space is required.

YUMMY!7.04 Tour :) :) :P
Yes, Ubuntu just keeps getting better. :thumbsup:Two items caught my eye. The Disk Analyzer looks good. Reminds me of Scanner V. 2.6 by Steffan Gerlach (for Windows). GUI tools like this, which help a user visualize things such as drive useage, are definitely a good thing! Truly, "a picture is worth a thousand words."The Help Center- I had to snicker just a little when I saw that. It reminds me sooooo much of the XP environment. For veteran Windows users, things got harder to find during the Win98 to XP changeover. The Start Menu got really 'busy', and not for the better, IMO. People weren't used to seeing things in 'plain english' in their OS, and it took some getting used to. Experienced users already know the Formal Names and the Functions of key pieces of software. They want to launch with something which says "Explorer" or "Windows Explorer", not some pablum like "Find things in your computer" (or whatever). But 'plain english' is perfectly OK for beginners. Ultimately, this sort of thing should be a configurable option, IMO, sort of like choosing between 'folder view' and 'show details'. ("View as Icons" vs. "View as List") Edited by Cluttermagnet

Too... yellow! :)
LOL . . . . the PowerPack edition is not yellow . . . . we ( Mandriva Club Members ) get a nice blue color :P:) BrunoPS: Clutter: In KDE there is an option to change the text in the menus so the description can be dumped and only the ( real ) name of the program stays.Maybe there is the same in Gnome . . . .
