Grogerf
Can someone help please? I've bought a new printer - a HP Photosmart C4180 all in one inkjet because a. my old Epson won't do photographs etc without the computer switched on & my wife wants this + photocopying with grandchildren here & coming.b. I checked the harware compatibility lists & it seems that this printer is fine for Linux.I'm using Mandriva 2007 64 bit. The instructions that come with the machine are for Windows & Mac but not for Linux. :'( I've downloaded the Self-Extracting Archive With Installer "hplip-1.7.1.run"Do I forget about the driver & just plug in the printer & see what happens?orDo I install the driver then plug in the printer or should I plug in the printer & then install the driver? I'm confused & looking forward to being told what to do! Grogerf
Bruno
Hi GrogerThe printerdrivers you need are included with the distro, no need to download/install different ones. ( so dump the "hplip-1.7.1.run" you downloaded !! )Just plug in your printer, boot up your computer ( or reboot ) and go to the MCC --> Hardware --> Printers to configure it, the wizard should automatically set it up for you. zlim
Grogerf, once you have it working, please go here http://forums.scotsnewsletter.com/index.php?showtopic=17529and add the information to this thread. This helps new users know what printers work with a particular distro.

BrunoHallo Bruno ,Didn't quite work that way .Printer auto detected on boot as HPPSmarc4100 (not 4180), clicked to automattically configure & got a message 'could not install HPLIP packages. I put in the DVD and installed the HPLIP packages from the MCC install software, went into MCC hardware & removed the printer then rebooted. This time it came up with a warning that it couldn't install the SANE packages. I installed the SANE packages from the DVD via MCC install software, went into the hardware section and again removed the printer and rebooted. Again it came up with the warning that it couldn't install the SANE packages & that I would not be able to scan. When I checked XSane it told me that no devices are available - but XSane did work on my Epson scanner before I physically removed it. I went back into MCC 'remove software and did a search on Sane, the following packages are installed :-lib64sane1, libsane1, libsane1-devel, sane-backends, saned, sane-frontends, xsaneOn the good side the printer test page looks good How do I go about getting the scanner part to work?Looking forward to your suggestions,Groger
Bruno
Hi GrogerI suppose you did not do all the updates before starting to configure your printer . . . . Now, here is what you do, first this command: # urpmi ftp://ftp.nluug.nl/pub/os/Linux/distr/Mandrakelinux/official/2007.0/x86_64/media/main/updates/rpmdrake-3.19-1.1mdv2007.0.x86_64.rpm ( command is ONE line ! )After that go to the MCC and get all the updates.Next remove the printer from the MCCFinally add the printer again and you will see that now the scanner will be configured too and all will be fine :DB) Bruno
Grogerf
Hallo Bruno ,Thanks for your help. You're right I didn't do all theupdates . I was waiting until I can get back onto a high speed service - ADSL hasn't shown up yet and I've only got 20 meg left on the radio network before I start paying - lots .)Not to worry either the ADSL will show up soon , or else we'll pass day 21 and I can use the radio network again .Then I'll be able to follow your advice and get it all work as advertised! I'll keep you posted and put it on the 'printers' section when it's all done & dusted. Thanks again,Grogerf

It would be good to get the printer fully operational on Mandriva 2007 64 bit version without having to wait until next week - or paying for 'excessive' downloads Maybe we have a 32 bit anomoly here - ALL those files are present with the same version number as you quote, but they are all ......mdv2007.0 versions not ......mdv2007.0.i586 Could this be the problem? if it is the problem can I have both the 32 bit and 64 bit versions present at the same time?Looking forward to your reply Grogerf

BrunoHallo Bruno and Striker ,Thank both for your pertinent and timely help.I went to MCC & installed lib64sane-hpaio, then removed the printer, exited MCC. Then when I switched the multi function printer on the system found it - this time with NO WARNINGS .Scanning now works And it's fast - Fantastic!Only a little problem now, I've left my old Epson Stylus Color 600 as the default printer until all the supplies of ink etc have been used up. When I use Kate, Open Office etc I can select the new HP printer if I want to, howver I can't get the new HP to show up as a printer in XSane, it only shows the Epson. It looks as though XSane should be able to access more than one printer - how do I get it to show the new printer?Looking forward to more words of wisdom Grogerf

striker
When you start up SANE (with connected and powered up HP, then wait a few secs after this before starting SANE),you'll see some windows opening. One of them shows the XSane options field... In that window click on Preferences > Setup > tab Copy. Now you'll see an Add Printer button. Try that and see what it does. You even may have to delete the Epson.Disclaimer : I find this to be confusing, so when something goes awry you're on your own. I tried the above and nothing happened, albeit I had nothing else connected - I don't have a second scanner or an AIO device. But there was not even a window opening asking me where to look for it ...

Yes it's confusing, but it works .For the benefit of others, switch on the all in one device, wait a few seconds, then open XSANE.Choose preferences, then setup. In setup choose the copy tab, then at the bottom of the page there is a tab to 'add new printer' click on this tab and you can add the new printer.Once in the 'add new printer' area all the command line information needed can be found from the MCC, then hardware, then set up printer, next highlight the needed printer, select actions, then edit, then select 'learn how to use this printer' - which gives a lenghty text of all the options.Hope that this isn't too confusing Now I'd better put the detail of the printer & drivers etc on the printer list Grogerf

Grogerf
Perfect ! That's music to my ears or picasso to my eyes ! Good work Grogerf. Hallo Folks ,Thought that this was HP Photosmart C4180 was nailed - but not quite I've tried printing some photos and ran into problems with GIMP - kept getting an error message on the printer LCD telling me there was a paper size or type error. I tried to use the "set up printer" and select HP and then found that the HPPSC4100 series isn't in the list When I tried using another HP printer the print was all black and not at all like the photo GIMP uses Gutenprint directly - don't know if this is the problem, but I could select the paper size as 6x4 but not the photo quality paper. Maybe I need to set up Gutenprint to use the HP PSC4180.Next I tried DigiKam - it worked by selecting photo/4x6 index card - well almost - I couldn't get it to print without borders even though I set the border size to zero. DigiKam uses CUPS and it seemed to take an age before the print happened. Can anyone help here? I guess I could use another program, but I do want to manipulate the photos and print border less on 6x4 size.Looking forward to more help Grogerf
Urmas
The first thing to try is to make the HP "default printer". Could do the trick.http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php...gimp+photosmart
striker
gimp-print is the one package to search for to see if it is installed. If not, go and get it.Then, when that's done - like Urmas posted - you have to set a default. Yep, the gimp has always been a piece of stubborness regarding printing. But I think it can be made working.

Could do the trick.http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php...gimp+photosmart Hallo Uramas Thank you for your fast response I went to the MCC and couldn't install Gimp-print. Did a look up on the net & find it's been replaced with Gutenprint - which is installed.I looked up the Gutenprint home page and it told me the last version of Gimp-print was 4.7.I'm not quite sure what did the trick, (believe it was the FAQS on Gutenprint) but I went into CUPS as a normal user through Firefox & selected the 4x6 index card size. Then I got out of CUPS without permanently altering anything. The GIMP seemed to print both via the new HP PSC 4180 and the old Epson Color 600. Couldn't believe my luck, powered down, switched off, rebooted and it still works! All I have to do now is to learn to use the GIMP - it seems pretty complicated . I guess I'll have to find some tutorials - managed to mess up the KDE on screen presentation with all the playing about Thanks again for your help in putting me on track - I only wish I knew what finally did it Grogerf

Hallo Stricker ,Thanks for your help The printing seems to be working from the GIMP, and it still works from other applications All I need to do now is to get to where I can use the GIMP efficiently. I'm at the stage of having difficulty selecting/resizing a digital image to get it to print without white areas on standard paper sizes If anyone has some experience with the GIMP I'd appreciate a few pointers. I've done a quick search on the net, but the guides I've found seem to be for someone more advanced than I am Thanks again for the help so far Grogerf
