V.T. Eric Layton
Split of from other thread . . . . on request Hi EricHave a look http://distrowatch.com/?newsid=03623#0 . . . . . it is a bugfix release of Dapper ( also here: http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=233444 ) Maybe this could be interesting and who knows it could just be ( or not ) the thing to do. ( ? ) BrunoHiya Bruno...Yeah, Urmas had alerted me to this at my forum already today. I have a question though... if my system has been completely updated religiously since installing, wouldn't I have all those updates/bug fixes already?Anyway, I intend to use Shipit to get 4 or 5 CDs from Ubuntu. One to keep, the others to share. ;)By the way, I received Linux Rute User's Tutorial and Exposition today! YAY! I'll be catching up on my reading later this evening. Bruno
Yeah, Urmas had alerted me to this at my forum already today. I have a question though... if my system has been completely updated religiously since installing, wouldn't I have all those updates/bug fixes already?Well, basically yes you would . . . . but then, since more people seem to have the same problem you have there could be something that has to be initiated during the install . . . . I think: you never know, it can not hurt, and your cold-booting problems are VERY uncommon and I really would like to have this resolved some way or another. Bruno
If I were to reinstall the OS again though, wouldn't I lose all my currently installed software and configurations? Yep . . . but in your case this might even be a good thing . . . . . . Q: do you have this...deb http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper-updates universe main restricted multiverse... in your /etc/apt/sources.list?A: probably not... put it there, do the "sudo apt-get update routine"... check again. V.T. Eric Layton
Well, I added that repository and updated using apt-get, and I rebooted. However, it still shows 6.06. :(Good news though... it did fix my ****** totem that hadn't been updating for the past week or so. :)Hey! When you get a minute, send me a PM or email with your complete (minus the porn apps ) sources.list. Thanks!Anyway, I don't know why mine won't update to that version that you have. :(Later... Go to system>administration>update manager and run update manager. When I did mine after changing sources.list I got 83 updates. After installing updatesand rebooting I now have same as Urmas "Ubuntu 6.06.1 LTS". Edited August 11, 2006 by Frank Golden

Urmas
Hey! When you get a minute, send me a PM or email with your complete (minus the porn apps ) sources.list.What? You don't want "deb http://archive.canonical.com/fallenmadonnaswithbigboobies dapper-commercial main"? Anyway... my sources.list is a mess... a working mess, but a mess nevertheless (looky... a poem!).I've posted it in the Cabin... pretty much how it is now... I've added the "Ubuntu Commercial Repos"... that's it.EDIT: You could try to install with the "alternate" CD (6.06.1). It's "text based", but very easy to use (Breezy didn't have "Desktop CD" at all)... see:If you are installing from the Desktop CD on a system that already has one or more RAID arrays or LVM volume groups set up, you must disable the arrays (sudo /etc/init.d/mdadm stop; sudo mdadm --stop --scan) and volume groups (sudo vgchange -a n) before starting the installer. And: The alternate install CD allows you to perform certain specialist installations of Ubuntu. It provides for the following situations:* creating pre-configured OEM systems;* setting up automated deployments;* upgrading from older installations without network access;* LVM and/or RAID partitioning;* installing GRUB to a location other than the Master Boot Record;* installs on systems with less than about 192MB of RAM.Also: next time you install, why don't you create a separate /home partition in Ubuntu? Bruno
Also: next time you install, why don't you create a separate /home partition in Ubuntu? That is some excellent advise ! . . . You always need a separate /home partition for your main distro . . . that way you can keep your mail, bookmarks, documents, downloads and preferences when you are upgrading and/or re-installing. BrunoSplit threads... OK, that'll work too! Thanks, Bruno! :)To continue:OK, anyway...Just a little while ago, I followed the advice given by Ubuntu-Demon at the Ubuntu forums in THIS post. It had no effect. When I use this command: $sudo apt-get install ubuntu-minimal ubuntu-standard ubuntu-desktop, the output tells me that the newest are already installed on my system. Yet, this command: lsb_release -a shows v6.06, not v6.06.1.Myeh... whaddya' gonna' do? Oh, and about installing the /home directory on a separate partition, I have my system set up that way already:*click for bigger picHere's a question: Do I have to have my source repositories enabled to get this update? I read somewhere that I shouldn't need source packages unless I planned on doing my own compiling (see above for a copy of my source.list). Edited August 11, 2006 by V.T. You're welcome Oh, and about installing the /home directory on a separate partition, I have my system set up that way already Great . . . good thinking !Here's a question: Do I have to have my source repositories enabled to get this update? I read somewhere that I shouldn't need source packages unless I planned on doing my own compiling (see above for a copy of my source.list). Source packages will not be installed unless you explicitly ask for it :0 . . . so no worries, and just leave those lines in the /etc/apt/sorces.list Bruno

Bruno
Sorry I did no check line for line, but if it has the same entries as the one Urmas posted I see no reason why you should not get exactly the same updates he does. Bruno

Or substitue mine or Urmie's. Urmie has a lot of overseas repos.

What with the problems with bootup and failure to update, this willprobably be your best bet. As you add new software take it easy and keep notes. Rebootor coldboot frequently looking for the old issues. Hopefully you just got a badlymessed up install and the next one will be the charm.I discovered just how easy it is to mess up my Ubuntu yesterday. After changing mysources.list to include the repo that Urmie provided I uninstalled and reinstalledTapiocaui (voip program that connects to Google Talk) to fix a minor issue. Unbeknownst to me the uninstall removed a folder "dbus-1" in /usr/local/shares/ and didn't replace iton reinstall. When I next rebooted x crashed with an error message about /usr/local/shares/dbus-1/services not existing. Not wanting to mess around I justrestored to an earlier image with partimage. I can reproduce the problem if I wantto mess around with fixing it without resorting to image restore. Might do it to tryto learn more about the nuts and bolts of Ubuntu. I did save a copy of the "dbus-1"on my Linuxshared partition. Replacing it in /usr/local/shares after reinstallingTapioca stops the boot up problem, but leads to other problems like sound issues.Weird Huh.I would be lost without partimage. V.T. Eric Layton
Not too weird. I had a crashed bootup the other day that removed my Dbus-1 also. Fortunately, I had a saved backup of that directory. :)I have about 100 rds of .45 Colt available. I don't have any .44 S&W though.

steel
Eric, ok this post was bothering me a bit cos i didnt why you couldnt get to the next level till i checked how you were doing it and now i know why your system is broken here is why looking at your post againthe first step is good vtel57@ericsbane02:~$ sudo apt-get update the second step you made vtel57@ericsbane02:~$ sudo apt-get upgrade NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOEXTREMELY IMPORTANT: Enter the command exactly as above, so the dist-upgrade step will run only if the update step is successful. If the first step fails but you still attempt to run the second step, you will probably end up with a corrupted system. . Make sure you type dist-upgrade rather than upgrade , because upgrade will totally hose your machine and render it completely unbootable. This is because a normal upgrade won´t upgrade packages with uninstalled dependencies, meaning your system will end up half Breezy and half Dapper And change every occurrence of "breezy" to "dapper"; if you have a CD-ROM line in your file, then remove it. Your sources.list should look something like this, now:edit your source.list ## All officially supported packages, including security- and other updates deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu dapper main restricted deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu dapper-security main restricted deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu dapper-updates main restricted ## The source packages (only needed to recompile existing packages) #deb-src http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu dapper main restricted #deb-src http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu dapper-security main restricted #deb-src http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu dapper-updates main restricted ## All community supported packages, including security- and other updates deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu dapper universe multiverse deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu dapper-security universe multiverse deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu dapper-updates universe multiverse ## The source packages (only needed to recompile existing packages) #deb-src http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu dapper universe multiverse #deb-src http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu dapper-security universe multiverse #deb-src http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu dapper-updates universe multiverse and then.. sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade so you were 1/2 way there... when updating your system to the next level dont do apt-get especially with the new source.list cos you will break your box badly!!!!
