Gus K Posted July 30, 2006 Posted July 30, 2006 Seems Ewido doesn't stack up very well against the competition.http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,1993985,00.asp Quote
Guest LilBambi Posted July 31, 2006 Posted July 31, 2006 I too have heard that Ewido wasn't the best one ... However, in combination with other antimalware programs, it has gotten some things that were resistent to removal and helped in the overall cleaning of computers. Thanks for sharing the article ... most reviews haven't even included Ewido in the past. redmaledeer Posted July 31, 2006 Posted July 31, 2006 . . . in combination with other antimalware programs, it has gotten some things that were resistent to removal and helped in the overall cleaning of computers.I am also a fan of using redundant antimalware programs, on the grounds that what one doesn't catch another may, even if it isn't the best program if it were used by itself. JerryM Posted July 31, 2006 Posted July 31, 2006 I have a lifetime license for Ewido. I got it as an anti-trojan application. A couple of years ago, Firefighter posted on Wilders his test results using AVs with and without Ewido as an additional layer.http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=58597Results with Ewido were much better with most AVs, and especially those which did not have an especially good detection rate of trojans. AV Comparatives tests show that information for the AVs tested. An AV like Kaspersky, which has a very high detection rate, would not profit much or maybe not at all. However, Avast does not show a high detection rate of trojans and so the overall security of the machine is much improved by the addition of Ewido or a good AT.I admit disappointment that Ewido did not show as well as other AS in the areas of keyloggers, and rootkits. At this point in time, since I use KAV6 and F-Secure, I would not buy an AT, but would install the free versions of Ewido and a-squared and run a scan periodically. I am using SuperAntiSpyware as my AS, but it remains to be seen how good it is compared to the other AS applications. If Ewido is to be marketed as an anti-spyware application, the developers have a lot of "catch up" work to do if they are to be competitive.Regards,Jerry Quote
patio Posted July 31, 2006 Posted July 31, 2006 (edited) I gave up awhile ago expecting PCMag to be an un-biased source...currently running AVG; Spybot; AdAware and Ewido for the last 10 months....no problems whatsoever.patio. Edited July 31, 2006 by patio Quote
Gus K Posted August 1, 2006 Author Posted August 1, 2006 I gave up awhile ago expecting PCMag to be an un-biased source...currently running AVG; Spybot; AdAware and Ewido for the last 10 months....no problems whatsoever.patio. We do have to look somewhere for some feedback, the fact that you had no problems is not necessarily a good indicator of a product's effectiveness. By the way PCMag gives Ad-AwareSE a good rating and prefers it over Spybot.I've seen many posts by folks who use no AV products and also claim no problems. A careful surfer who avoids the obvious trouble spots, adult and warez sites, p2p applications etc, doesn't open any attachments, keeps their browser set for highest security and is running sp2 could probably go years without any problems. Add a cheap NAT router to the mix and you are good to go (usually). You would probably not be happy to read PCWorld's AV reviews, all the free AV apps where slammed hard while BitDefender and Kaspersky received high marks. The important thing is to be careful and not become too enamored with any of the apps as things, and reviews, are always changing. daveydoom Posted August 1, 2006 Posted August 1, 2006 I've been using ewido for over 2 and a 1/2 years now. It's caught a lot of things that other products have missed. I'm not saying it's the best but when used in conjunction with other anti spyware/malware apps and an anitvirus program it's top notch as far as I'm concerned. It's just one more tool to utilize so I don't hold much faith in articles like that . Quote
blizzard89 Posted September 17, 2006 Posted September 17, 2006 Has anyone tested the current version 4.0? I'm currently testing it and it appears to be finding a bit more than Adware or Spybot. Quote
daveydoom Posted September 17, 2006 Posted September 17, 2006 Yes, I've been using it since it came out. it appears to be finding a bit more than Adware or Spybot. It should, they don't always look for the same things Quote
