Bruno
Very strange ., . it looks like the script from the last updates you did get did not "take" . . . I am sending you a file to your yahoo email account . . . as soon as you get it copy it in its place with # cp /home/rp/kdmrc /etc/kde/kdm/ and let it overwrite the old file . . . then have the restore option ( below) ready if a reboot fails :"> Now, imagine that after this you can not get into X . . . . press Esc at lilo . . and type the menuentry you want to boot and add a space and a 3 . . . then you will boot in level 3 . . . then log in as root and reverse our action from above:# cp  /etc/kde/kdm/kdmrc-OLD  /etc/kde/kdm/kdmrc# reboot And start the "normal" way . . rpiz
Bruno...I did a 'save as' for the file that you had sent; but I got the following after doing the 'cp' command?[root@localhost rp]# cp /home/rp/kdmrc /etc/kde/kdm/cp: cannot stat `/home/rp/kdmrc': No such file or directoryIt seems that it didn't save the file in '/home/rp/kdmrc' for some reason? Bruno
Try to save it again . . . and look closely where it puts it ( maybe /home/rp/Documents ? or /home/rp/Desktop ? ) . . use another browser then FF :"> ( because FF does not show you where it downloads it to ) Bruno
rpiz
Bruno..Ok. I have the file saved and then did the 'cp' command. Now I should go and reboot. At what point during the reboot do I do the 'esc'?And afterwards I would enter 'KDE 3'? Am I on the right track? The reason I had problems with the file is that 'Kget' kept crashing? I had to reload 'Kget'then I was able to save the file.
Bruno
Just do a "normal" reboot . . . . only if that fails you do the "rescue" operation with Esc as soon as you see the Lilo screen.:"> Bruno
rpiz
Bruno...I did the reboot and 'gnome' came up as before. I then changed it to 'KDE' and logged off/logged onand then did a reboot but the result was the same. I again have to change the 'gnome' to 'kde' at the session screen. Bruno
This is driving us two crazy !! . . . . . did it maybe make a new /home/rp/.desktop ?? . . Would XDM work better now we actually removed Gnome from /etc/X11/wmsession.d ?? Those are the last 2 questions I have . . . after that I give up ( for today . . maybe I will have another idea tomorrow ):"> BrunoNOTE: If we ever want to restore the 02GNOME we renamed in /etc/X11/wmsession.d . . . . this is the command: # mv /etc/X11/wmsession.d/OLD-02GNOME /etc/X11/wmsession.d/02GNOME
rpiz
Bruno...I went back in and changed the display manager to 'XDM' rebooted and after entering 'rp' andthe password, kde came up fine. I then re-entered MCC and changed display manager back toMDKKDM and then rebooted; but the same result appeared. Gnome appeared and then I had tochange it to 'kde' to logon. I'll see you tomorrow. Bruno
Hi RpizA new day . . new chances . . . . I was thinking: I can send you the complete "/etc/kde/kdm" directory . . . it is only 36 kB . . . . . and maybe that will fix it ( or even make a bigger mess, but if we back up the current /etc/kde/kdm first we can always restore the "original" one . . . . . ) Bruno
rpiz
Hi Bruno;I am not sure? Is the inconvenience of changing the session login from 'Gnome' to 'Kde' worthcreating, possibly, a bigger mess. We may try this if MDK 10.0 isn't lunched overall and we canreverse whatever changes are attempted? What do you think?
Bruno
Hi RpizCome on . . . live dangerously, and let us give it a swing ! :PNo seriously, the risk is not that big and if we do it "together" we make a backup of the present derectory first and will always be able to restore to the point where it is at this moment. rpiz
Hi Bruno;Ok Partner, you think that we should go for it? Keep in mind that I have added KDE 3.3 viayou instructions in the past, and other than that everything is MDK 10.1 with updates. It still seems strange that '/etc/kde/kdm' file would not take after updates, or in fact get messed upalong the way?? But regardless, you still think we should go for it?
Bruno
Oh yes . . I am all for adventure . . . . . and if we make the correct backup first noting really drastic can happen . . . . . . I just want you to print out the "rescue-instructions" I will be giving you for if things don't go as expected. With those 2 security measures I feel safe enough to take responsibility :)Give me a sec to send you the .tar.gz and write the instructions . . . :DB) Bruno
