You must be using the ext3 file system. Because it's the same as ext2 with journal on top, it's set to do a check automatically every 50 days. As root, you can run the following command:fsck.ext3 -p /dev/hda10This command will do an automatic check and repair with no prompts. There are lots of other options where you can control the level of prompting but unless you're more of a guru than I am, you won't know how to answer the prompts anyway, so it's better just to let fsck do what needs to be done. The way to avoid this is to use reiserfs or one of the other jounalized file systems. Or you can turn this feature off though I'm not sure that's safe. Besides, I don't remember where to do this.

Hello DaleI don't know if this will help in your case or not as I am using reiserfs. Might be worth a try. BTW I am using the commercial version of Suse 9.2 pro. if you put in the install CD or DVD whatever the case may be and boot up using it and start to do a install it will let you do a repair on the Suse system. I had some problems with a fresh install Address book in Evolution would not work and then after imaging to another hard drive (Disk Clone) all I could get was the GRUB on bootup. Put in my install DVD booted up started an install and when it gave me the option to do a repair I told it to do it. It repaired several problems including the boot loader (Grub) my fstab and the address book problem in Evolution. It checked every partion in Suse and several other things.Mel

Jason ... correct I am using the ext3 for the file system ... how do I get to make a root entry ????? after I get the warning about the file system having errors I get the folllowing two lines the first one says that in order to reboot I need to use ... ctrl-d .. that reboot or shutdown will not work .. the next line is ... root login prompt .. when I enter the password it does not accept it and goes to another prompt with some strange characters ... but I still can't make a login as root ...

I think it is strange in the first place that you get errors on that filesystem and that it does not simply take the journal to recover . . . . I never has any problems with Ext3.But apart from that I would follow Mel's suggestion and do a repair with your install CDs. Bruno

Mel / Bruno .....I had a feeling it would involve a disk .. I am using the 9.1 pro version from that 3 cd pkg offer from Novell/SuSE ... the only other time I have had the hard disk check situation come up was in the Knoppix OS on here ,, but all went well with it ... heres hoping on SuSE ...

Dale,Suse's repair tool is excellent and can fix many problems. Boot the disk and select install not repair. Once in the install Suse will detect that you have linux already installed. At that point select repair and a new tool will open that has several options for repair. Choose the automatic option. This has a good chance of fixing your problems. If they are fixable. I'm thinking that you may have a bum disk drive. EXt3 is a journalled file system. If it can't auto fix your drive from the journal I fear you may have a problem with the drive itself. Any data on that drive that is important? Is this a multiboot drive?

Nathan ,,,Yes it is multi boot/multi hd ...all was fine until I burned those 3 disks ... then later on that day when I started back up is when the problem occured .. yes, I would say since that it is my primary OS that it does have some important info on it ..... I guess I am going to get some valuable knowledge with this endevor..........

Hi DaleIf you have some important data on SUSE, and you can still boot another distro on that drive . . . it might be wise to copy some of that data over to another partition before you start the repair-adventure in SUSE.:( Bruno

Bruno,Will he not get the same errors in another distro as well when he tried to mount it? He is going to have to fix the file problems first before he can retrieve data is he not?

He might indeed, but sometimes ( often ) it just bypasses the /etc/sysconfig/autofsck file and he might be able to mount it . . . or change the fstab file to read "0 0" so no check is made.:( Bruno

Good point, Nathan. However, I think it depends on the tool used to do the backup. A sector-by-sector copy like Ghost or partimage would probably do it without any mounting required. Of course, the partition will have to be fixed sometime. Not sure why you can't login, Dale. Are you sure you didn't have caps lock on when you tried the password? Once you fix things, you will need to use Ctrl-D as it suggests to reboot. Otherwise, you'll just end up back at the same place.Btw, is your important data on SUSE? Or is on another partition? Using the fsck.ext3 the way I mentioned will only affect the SUSE partition. No danger of it affecting data elsewhere. Just be sure you use it on the right partition which from your info, appears to be /dev/hda10 in this case.

Am getting ready to attempt this feat of unknown adventure the info on it is not super important ,, like any sort of banking .. etc ... I can boot fine into Drake 10.0 ... have not tried any of the other distros to see what the results would be

HURRAAAY it mounted !! . . So now have a look at the files you want to backup:

# ls -al /mnt/hda10/home/dale

Just tell me what files ( or directories ) from that list you want to backup ;) Bruno

You want to backup: ( it makes no sense to back up all the hidden config files . . some of them might be corrupt, seeing the errors you get booting SUSE )Documents ?downloads ?.thunderbird ( your mail ) ?bookmarks ?public_html ? noia apps www ??the pdf files ?? j2re-1_4_2_06-linux-i586.bin ? install_flash_player_7_linux.tar ??? Bruno

Ummmmmmmmmmmmmm......... the only items that I think I should keep are anything that have to do with the OS, Firefox, and Thunderbird the NOIA is the skin ap that I have for Firefox, the bookmarks yes , as far as the java and flash are concerned keep only if the actual installation is corrupt too ....

I have an idea:

# mkdir /home/dale/Backup_SUSE# cp -rp  /mnt/hda10/home/dale  /home/dale/Backup_SUSE/

It will take a few seconds to finish, but then the full /home/dale on SUSE is backed-up on Mandrake . . in the directory: "/home/dale/Backup_SUSE"After checking if it is really there . . you can start to fix SUSEB) Bruno

Now this what Nathan wrote . . . . :) . . . fix your SUSE installIf that does not work: re-install . . . . :DB) Bruno
