Looks like you have the wrong commands ( too old  ) . . like " grep sound-slot /etc/modules.conf" . . the /modules.conf is not in use anymore since kernel 2.6 . . Anyway I can see from the output of your "lsmod" that the sound drivers are loaded and should produce sound . . . so I would suggest you install "aumix" and give me the result of "aumix -q"NOTE: Better replace your notes with the following commands:# ls -l /dev | egrep -i dsp\|mixer# lspcidrake -v | egrep -i "(audio|multimedia|host bridge)"# cat /etc/modprobe.conf | egrep -i snd\|sound# /sbin/chkconfig --list alsa# /sbin/chkconfig --list sound# /sbin/lsmod | egrep -i snd\|sound\|audio\|gameOR: Run the SoundCheck-Script Here:hmm: Bruno

Hi albrtijoThanks for the output  . . . . . . the thing is it all looks fine, only the output of the aumix is pretty weird . . . . . see what I get from "aumix -q" :

[bruno:~]$ aumix -qvol 39, 39, Ppcm 87, 87speaker 80, 80line 77, 77, Pmic 0, 0, Rcd 77, 77, Pigain 80, 80line1 77, 77, Pphin 77, 77, Pphout 77, 77, Pvideo 77, 77, P
and yours is only
[charlie@localhost ~]$ aumix -qline 79, 78mic 0, 0cd 2, 2pcm2 100, 100igain 0, 0
That is a whole lot shorter, does not have the "vol" . . AND it does not have the P and R . . . . Also it has pcm2 and not pcm . . . . . Maybe you should remove and reinstall aumix, and install alsamixer too . . . . . ANyway that gives me time to think what could be wrong here ;):icon8: Bruno

Haven't had sound on the old eMachine Desktop nor this new Sony Desktop. Nor have I had (on both boxes) an "Input" panel on Kmix.I removed and reinstalled "aumix", but it's a no find "alsamixer" for install nor uninstall.I'm now using free2006 (replaced the 2006test? version which replaced LE2005).For what it's worth I was given a little, young, aggravating, Cornish Rex girl cat She's BLACK!For a dig: I just ate my lunch on the patio so Diva could play outside. I've read about your weather. albrtijoPS I'll work on that P and R (I forgot about them.)

"main" and "contrib" didn't change anything I could see, but:I just discovered I no longer have "modprobe" in "/etc". I have "modprobe.conf", "modprobe.devfs", and "modprobe.preload". Since we started trying to straighten out "Kmix", I reinstalled free2006 by retaining "/home" and formatting "/" and "/usr. With search (find) I find two executables: "etc/alternatives/modprobe->/sbin/modprobe-25" and "/sbin/modprobe->/etc/alternatives/modprobe" and an empty "/proc/sys/kernel/modprobe (0B) (document) and /var/lib/rbm/alternatives/modprobe (43B) (plain text).Does this make sense to you? albrtijoMODPROBE.DEVFS# /etc/modprobe.devfs# Andrey Borzenkov <arvidjaar@mail.ru> 08-JUN-2003## THIS FILE WILL BE OVERWRITTEN EACH TIME YOU INSTALL DEVFSD!!!# Modify /etc/modprobe.conf instead.# WARNING WARNING WARNING# as of this writing (0.9.11a) modprobe from module-init-tools does not# support chained aliases. Hi albrtijoThat looks all completely normal . . . I have the same as you have:

[bruno:~]$ ls /etc | grep modprobemodprobe.confmodprobe.devfsmodprobe.preload[bruno:~]$ la -al /sbin/modprobelrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 26 Oct 11 21:02 /sbin/modprobe -> /etc/alternatives/modprobe*
Also I see that the sound modules ( drivers ) are loaded in your /etc/modprobe.conf . . . . . when you do: "/sbin/lsmod | egrep -i snd\|sound\|audio\|game" you most likely will see those modules listed . . . . But, seeing the output of your "aumix -q" in previous install I still think it rather is a mixer problem then a soundcard driver problem. Bruno

On my Toshiba laptop (LE2005) there's no aumix and my KMix control shows tabs: Output, Input, Switches. Sound works. On my Sony desktop there are aumix and KMix installed, but both show only Output: Line, Mic, CD, Pcm2, IGainAt the bottom of the KMix (under the above list) on the Toshiba, it says Intel82801DB-ICH4.On the Sony, it days: Realtek ALC880I just noticed on the Sony, for what it's worth, both aumix and KMix show the same volume amounts 78, 0, 2, 100, 0I'm still digging albrtijo

Hi albrtijoI still would like you to install "alsamixer" . . . . . first add the contrib source:

# urpmi.addmedia contrib ftp://ftp.nluug.nl/pub/os/Linux/distr/Mandrakelinux/official/2006.0/i586/media/contrib with ../media_info/hdlist_contrib.cz

( Command is ONE line )Then after that:

# urpmi alsamixergui

Next I would like you to add your username to the audio-group . . . . see here how that is done. ( While you're at it you might as well add yourself to the wheel group like in the example )B) Bruno

Hi Bruno, alsamixer has been installed, I am added to audio and wheel groups, but I can't find how I am to use them.I installed Gnome just in case but KMix still has only the "output" onscreen control.albrtijo

There is no direct use for them, it is only to make sure that you have no permission problem.I am still puzzled about this, maybe you can start "kmix" as root and see if that one looks the same ?:( Bruno

This is weird (to me), Bruno. Following is what happened the first time I su-ran kmix. I went out for a couple of hours, now when I su-run kmix I get the gui controls with "Output" only. When I went to the root window and clicked kmix, I got the no "Output" thing again.[root@localhost charlie]# kmixCreating link /root/.kde/socket-localhost.Created link from Hi albrtijoThose "kbuildsycoca: WARNING" messages look alarming but they are harmless, some apps do not like to be run as "su" in a console . . . . but after spitting out a fair number of "kbuildsycoca: WARNING:" messages the app will finally pop up :)Sometimes you can prevent this by reshuffling the command like this: "kdesu kmix", it will then ask for the rootpassword and start kmix as root. What is not clear to me yet from your post id if there was a difference between the first time and the second time you started kmix as root.:( Bruno

Bruno, as I remember, I read your suggestion to check kmix as root, I went to konsole, as su ran kmix and got the long text file. Then I went to the root gui and ran kmix and got "Output only" panel. When I came home, I went to konsole, typed kmix and got the "Output only" panel.Of course before the first "konsole-kmix" venture I had been running other things which I can't recall.I'll run the "konsole-kmix" thing and let you know if the text shows up albrtijo

I just rememberred something, Julia had a post about PCLos lately and by removing a package the one that posted got his sound back . . . . Now, I have been looking through all the posts of the last 2 weeks but can not find what that package was.I will send a mail to Julia and ask her if she remembers what ( or where ) it was . . . . Will get back to you.B) Bruno

Yes, there have been problems with the one on pass right now. It kills sound. Here is the solution
rpm -e akode

and that fixes the problem. You then may need to restart arts afterwards. It appears the offending package is one called akode: B) I believe, however, that the one on the ibiblio is the build before this one and may not have the sound problem.

It took me a while to find it, but I finally located it. Hope this does it for you. :)

Thank you, Julia, for your effort. I get "akode not installed". I poked around for it in MCC, but nada. I tried my limited downloadability with urpmi, did another nada.Bruno and I are in a tie on this one: neither one of us understand it, but I've got my fumble-itis as an excuse.I had this problem on my kaput eMachine from which I drew my new Sony's /home files. (And, by the way, some root and etc stuff, I think.) I think I'll wipe out the whole shebang and reinstall free2006. Then before reinstalling the old /home stuff, see if I can get sound. As I remember I downloaded the 3 free2006 disks to my hard drive, then installed from there. But I haven't been able to locate where that download is stored.See, you fool with me, you're fooling with trouble. Thanks again albrtijo

Don't worry. All this will straighten itself out with a bit of fiddling. We just have to find the right answer. If you transferred a bunch of files over from another computer and then started having problems, it could be related to something you transferred. :whistling:
