Grasshopper Posted October 19, 2005 Share Posted October 19, 2005 My take is that, yeah, we (health care pro's) make mistakes. Why does it seem like there's more mistakes? Well, prolly cuz there are more people in the world now to take care of. If you compare the responsibilities from even 50 years ago to today, there's no comparison. We are responsible and have more liability than ever before. That means that there are more things to know and consequently more things to forget. All these people are specialists, meaning that they practice a few procedures and advise on special situations. It's unbelievably easy to make a mistake of omission or something of that sort. It's no excuse for error, but it happens...and all the more common since there's more people in the world and errors get reported more often. It's good to have that info for the public.On the flip side...what if you are a histrionic/bipolar woman who has just given birth to a baby who, otherwise perfectly healthy, has Prozac in his blood because you weren't brave enough to come off it when you found out you were with child. Since Prozac stays in the blood a long time, the child can have adverse effects for 3-4 weeks. Oh, and if the mother is in denial of the Prozac in the baby's blood, then she take him to the pediatrician, does not tell he/she that she was on Prozac the entire pregnancy, and tries to get treatment with medication that she, the mother, thinks is best to give the baby that she found on the FREAKIN' INTERNET!!! Again, there is nothing wrong with the baby and he's on 4-5 diferrent meds for various GI "problems". Mom found the symptoms on WebMD and "diagnosed" him. And like Julia says, it's a litigous profession too. Unfortunately, I'd like to get out of it. It's decent money, but I'd rather have the enjoyment and a "tolerable" responsibility than always be wondering if you made "the error" that screws up someone's life.Oh, and Mat's relationship with Tuon is getting...interesting. He later owned his own (2 in PA). That lasted 10 years but i think he and his friend were glad to get out of it. We barely saw much of dad during those years so we'd go to the stores to see him lol. My sister is a pharmacist now. What gets me the most is the huge increase in salary. My father in his entire life never made as much as she does! (of course she works for a major chain....). However my sister has toyed with getting out of the pharmacy game. Between hassles with the insurance companies, unreachable doctors and the nasty customer who think they are right all the time...she's about had it. Don't know what she will do though...she's been in the same field for 16 years. (more than me...and we all thought I'd be the homebody loyal company person...hahahaha).
