Longhorn, The Road Ahead for Microsoft

Picture is worth a thousand words..well here is the roadmap for Microsoft Windows.clientroadmap2003.jpg

A Japanese site has (bravely) posted some screenshots and video footage of the new UI features in Longhorn and exactly how it behaves. You can see from the screenshots and videos that the Windows in Longhorn can be stretched, flipped and spun around. At the end of the screenshots and videos is a note to show this is infact build 4015. Indicating this kind of UI is already available in Longhorn builds at the moment. However this build is different to the build that leaked to the internet a few weeks ago, this is a Lab6 build whereas the leaked edition is a main build. The shots and videos show that core to Longhorn itself is the element of it's new UI developing. The fact DX9 can handle this kind of animation and the animation we have seen in technologies like the slideshow on the sidebar is amazing. As Longhorn is currently at Milestone 5 I am sure between now and Milestone 7 we'll see these kind of animation features of the next Windows even more. I'm not sure if we'll see these kind of windows animation features for the final product but this is a demonstration of just how powerful the animation effects in Longhorn will be...
# Screenshot: Calculator Stretched # Screenshot: Calculator Standalone # Screenshot: Confirmation of build 4015 # Video: Window stretching video # Video: Animation on top of the OS # Video: Picture slideshow in animation # Video: Windows doing the twist Most Mac fan might think that Microsoft is far behind with the current version of Mac OS 10.2 (thanks to its Quartz Extreme). However, Windows Longhorn does address the same video issue with far more advanced feature which Mac can't match yet.

Is there not going to be a SP2 for XP? I thought I read a reference to one somewhere, but I don't see one included on the time-line.

Yes there will be service pack 2 for Xp.. and before Longhorn is released, you can expect to see service pack 3 or 4 for Xp (the same applies to Windows 2000, where SP4 will be released this summer)One main feature of SP2 for Xp will feature "Con-Current" secession, where you can use remote desktp to login to the same account, whereas the user on the physical machine can use the same account without any conflicts. Kinda like UNIX secured secession. That feature is targeting SmartDisplay though. The roadmap doesn't really include the service pack plan. There is already a SP1 in process for Windows 2003 Server ...how interesting?

It's the typical microsoft plan. Release now, fix(or try to make work correctly) later.

Not quite so. Microsoft originally planned to release Windows 2003 to manufacturing almost 1 month before April 24th, but all the builds had failed escrow until build 3790. It has shown that Microsoft is really taking time to make the system as stable and flawless as possible. There are soo many lines of code, so bug is quite unavoidable. Besides, currently SP1 list for Windows 2003 is only 6 at this moment.http://www.ethan-c-allen.com/xpsp2/sp1.html

If Longhorn and Trusted Computing are tied together, then sayonara Microsoft. I will be sticking with Windows XP and using Linux in whatever version it happens to be at.

Well, those two programs are just for demo. and if you see one of the video. it shows, that windows media player "playing the movie" while spinning around on the screen.. and it also shows Task Manager, which shows the CPU usage is low. That's the same tactic that Apple uses to present their Quartz Extreme. As for trusted computing, I do agree that Microsoft should give users the options to turn it off. I don't necessarily think Microsoft should drop that idea. It might be an alternative to PGP, but you never know.I do think Longhorn doesn't look that nice at this moment, but pretty soon, the theme will change, and it will get a new look, so give it sometime. It is too early to say if you want to stay with Windows Xp/2000 or not. By the time it comes, I am sure a lot of crowds will head to Longhorn one way or another. Longhorn logo is based off the sports team in Texas, but its name comes from the bar near Columbia District.Anyhow, give it sometime, and see how it works out for you.

Quartz Extreme? JohnnyComeLately. If you want to see the status of BeOs in (!) 1998, play any video athttp://murl.microsoft.com/LectureDetails.asp?115No spinning, warping, fluttering or orbiting that I remember, but how about decoding two near-DVD MPEG2 streams while playing an MP3, all the while madly scrubbing windows around on the desktop and opening a dozen instances of whatever you want - all on a dual PII-233. Looked smooth to me.

I understand how you feel about BeOS. I too is very excited the new Zeta from http://www.yellowtab.com and BeOS has been known as the best multi-media OS around the block, but you have to admit that they were real poor at marketing, so lets hope it doesn't make the same mistake again.Nonetheless, Microsoft has always been behind, and yet trying to innovate at the same time. I still wish to see how it progress in the next 2 years as far as Longhorn development is concerned.A lot of criticism has been raised up against Microsoft, and I am sure Steve Wozniak would be the first person to do so as well. However, I don't think it is a bad thing for OS to advance and match up with the rest competitors. That's why competitions are good. There are still some amazing features in Windows that Mac really can't match, and certainly there are features in Zeta that both Mac and Windows can't match, so still, it comes down the point where a user should choose an OS that works the best for him/her in both efficiency and user friendliness.
