V.T. Eric Layton
I caught an episode of Front and Center on PBS early this AM that featured Zakk Wylde, lead guitar/vocals for the group Black Label Society, sitting in with the Les Paul Trio at the Iridium Theater. This dude can bend some strings, man! I wish I had had the passion in my youth to become a guitar god like this. His fret work is astounding. Here's a couple samples from the Front and Center show: http://youtu.be/s1OGQQk5HpM Zakk Wylde and the Les Paul Trio at the Iridium --> youtu.be/i5SV9e0hDc0 If you like blues-infused heavy metal/hard rock like Stevie Ray Vaughn, Allman Brothers Band, Alice In Chains, Motorhead, etc. you'll love Black Label Society. I'm listening to their first album, Sonic Brew, right now on GrooveShark. I'll be exploring all their albums in the next few days. These guys are going to be my new fav metal heads for a while, I think. V.T. Eric Layton
They are awesome. I'm going to be really happy for you when that little town you're in finally makes it to the 21st century. You're missing so much.
sunrat
That's some hot playing! You should check out Tal Wilkenfeld, now one of the world's best bass players. She's Aussie too. Tal was voted "The Year's Most Exciting New Player" in Bass Player's 2008 Readers Choice Awards. http://talwilkenfeld.com/ I had the pleasure of seeing Jeff Beck several years ago and was blown away. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Alo3Zpqmmc Her solo from ~6.10 made me all tingly.
V.T. Eric Layton
She's awesome, Roger! Lots of jazz influence in her pedigree, for sure. She plays that bass like a lead guitar player. Another great female bassist; this one with a fabulous vocal range, too... V.T. Eric Layton
I was working out in the shop till late last night and then again for most of today assembling and troubleshooting a Frankenputer to replace my crashed main system (updates about this in a thread in hardware). While I was out there, the kitties and I were ROCKIN' OUT to Black Label Society. I have 242 songs across 9 or 10 albums in my BLS playlist on GrooveShark. I set it to shuffle play the entire playlist. D***! That is some serious, no BS ROCK AND ROLL! I'm becoming addicted to these guys. It's amazing, but I don't think I heard a song yet from them that I didn't like. I think my favorite so far is World of Trouble off Sonic Brew. http://grooveshark.c...le/2BV2Lg?src=5 I'm telling you, even my three little boy cats out in the shop are becoming head bangers listening to these guys for two days. Later...
V.T. Eric Layton
Cool. And FWIW...YOU, sir, have excellent taste in music! Zak Wylde is one of my all-time favorites and I love his BLS stuff. I'm partial to his Blessed Hellride and Shot To **** albums, but the man is a maestro and one of the last standing guitar heroes! The above quote is from THIS post in an unrelated thread in BATL. I'm replying to it here. Actually, I've always thought I have some strange taste in music. I'm all over the place as you can see from my GrooveShark Profile. I grew up with an older brother, so I was a child of the 60s just because I spent my childhood listening to music that my brother and his friends had playing on the radio all the time back then. You'll see songs like Psychotic Reaction (Count Five), Venus (the original by Shocking Blue), and Surfin' Bird (The Trashmen) on my favorites playlist over there. I love Rock & Roll (50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, etc.)! I love The Blues (Howlin' Wolf, PineTop Perkins, Albert King, etc.). I love Jazz. I love Celtic. I even listen to Classical. About the only thing you won't catch my listening to are Rap, Disco, or Frank Sinatra. About BLS/Zakk Wylde, though... I am a hardcore Black Sabbath fan from way back. When Ozzy left BS and went out on his own, I followed him during the Randy Rhoads era, but not too much after that. Because of this, I wasn't familiar with Wylde. As mentioned above, I just happen to catch him jammin' with the Les Paul Trio at the Iridium on that PBS show a few weeks ago. I was MAJORLY impressed with this guy. I went online right after the show to research him. Ain't the Internet wonderful?! Anyway, that led me to BLS. And the rest, as they say, is history. I have not yet heard a bad tune from these guys. They are absolutely AWEWOME! Of course, you have to like that loud, head-bangin' type music to appreciate them. With my Black Sabbath pedigree, how could I not love BLS? I'd bet that Iommi, Butler, Ward, and Ozzy all listen to BLS, too. Yes, indeedy.... GOOD STUFF! I have a playlist on my GrooveShark called Adrenaline Jam. It's mostly BLS and BS. I play this at relatively high volume while playing the 1st Person Shooter game S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Gets the heart pumping, blood flowing, etc. http://youtu.be/LMf0elaZZoA
