mhbell
{SOLVED} Still having Problems with Debian Cinnamon I started a new post because the other one was getting to long and several things have changed. I will start off with my computers spec's. Asus Prime B450M-A/CSM Mother Board AMD Ryzen 2 2200G CPU with Vega 8 Graphics 16 GB of Ram Bios (Firmware) 2000 OS Debian Stretch non-free with Cinnamon DE. Did a clean install of debian and got all of the updates. I did not install the backports at this time. here is what I get when I boot up to the OS. "(Running Software in Rendering Mode)" In Mint and other OS's using the cinnamon DE the only way to solve it was a newer kernel. I am using the 4.19.28 in Mint and it solved the problem and is working fin so far. When I tried using Liquorix kernel Like sunrat suggested I get the following error when I run the first part. # Mirrors:# # Unit193 - France # deb http://mirror.unit193.net/liquorix sid main # deb-src http://mirror.unit193.net/liquorix sid main bash: curl: command not found gpg: no valid OpenPGP data found. I am not sure what my next step will be. Waiting to hear from the forum members. Mel Edited April 20, 2019 by mhbell

In other words, you do not have the correct video driver installed so you are using a generic one. That has zero to do with your kernel. Link for you https://forums.linux...ic.php?t=159634 First of all Security the reference file above was started in 2014 and mint is a different animal I solved all of my graphics problems in Mint with a new Bios Firmware and a kernel update to 4.19.28 which is the one for mint 19.1 which works with no problems. Now I am having rendering problems with Debian Cinnamon non-free version from the debian community. in all of my other cases with the ryzen 2200G the problems have been solved with a kernel update. That has zero to do with your kernel. I have to disagree with you there. some of the newer kernels have the proper modules for the vega graphics. Now back to my problem. What do I need to do to get the proper graphics driver for Debian stretch cinnamon DE? Bear in mind I am not using a Graphics card, But the built in graphics in the Ryzen 3 2200G with vega 8 graphics. so I ask anyone what is the solution/ and how do I go about getting it fixed? Other distro's such as Manjaro cinnamon de work out of the box. I really want to solve this problem. Mel BTW I got the liquorix kernel 5.0.8.0 which is the one it installed but on boot it stops and freezes at (FBO: switching to amdgpu drm fb from simple) at that point it stops booting and freezes. I will have to purge that kernel and fall back to 4.0.
securitybreach
Well I was just pointing out that software rendering is a graphical issue, not kernel related. The kernel itself does not provide video drivers because they are provided by the varfious Xorg packages like xf86-video-amdgpu, etc. (if you use the opensource drivers). Now as far as your issue, Mesa is the driver that the Vega GPU uses along with the xf86-video-amdgpu. These should help and provide more information: https://www.reddit.c....2F19.x_only.29 https://www.linuxsec...php/AMDGPU.html

I solved the problem by going to the stretch backports and doing a "Upgrade" then liquorix installed a updated kernel which solved the problem along with a updated mesa. see the remarks belowRemarks: inxi -Gx Graphics: Device-1: AMD Raven Ridge [Radeon Vega Series / Radeon Vega Mobile Series] vendor: ASUSTeK driver: amdgpu v: kernel bus ID: 08:00.0 Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.19.2 driver: ati, modesetting unloaded: amdgpu, fbdev, radeon, vesa resolution: 1280x720~60Hz OpenGL: renderer: AMD RAVEN (DRM 3.27.0 5.0.0-8.1-liquorix-amd64 LLVM 6.0.0) v: 4.5 Mesa 18.2.8 direct render: Yes Note: the above is for Debian and not Mint. securitybreach
Good deal. I do not know why LInuxMint didn't provide the correct Mesa driver in the first place. Glad that it is solved anyway

raymac46
Well it looks to me as if you have the correct driver in Mint but not in Debian. I would expect in both cases to see the amdgpu driver in use since you have a more recent APU.
