Hedon James Posted October 17, 2021 Share Posted October 17, 2021 In all fairness to Ubuntu, any version with an odd-numbered prefix or a suffix of x.10 is just a release candidate (RC) for the next LTS version. Those seemed to be his biggest issues. yes, but Firefox was a snap, and replacing with a DEB solved his issue, so those were both snap issues. I don't like how Canonical pushes the snap agenda. To fill the "gaps" of software I can't get in a DEB? sure, okay. But as the primary option...no thanks, I'll pass. And Gnome jumped the shark a long time ago, but is un-phased by that and now seems to be "jumping for distance". The Gnome problem can be solved by using Xubuntu, Kubuntu, Lubuntu, Ubuntu Mate, etc... But that snap problem still exists. raymac46 Posted October 17, 2021 Share Posted October 17, 2021 I watched the video and I agree that most of the headaches were caused by snap rather than GNOME. GNOME is what it is. Distrotube is a WM lover and it's not surprising he doesn't like GNOME. Personally I have been able to configure GNOME 40 to my liking in Debian. Cluttermagnet Posted November 19, 2021 Share Posted November 19, 2021 I just installed a copy of Linux Mint 20.1 Mate on my ancient Lenovo R61 laptop that usually lives over at Casa David. Have it over here at Casa Betty to do the work. I think LM 20 is an LTS release? Anyway I think I would tend to wait for LM 22, based on what I am hearing. For me, Mint has been mostly rock solid, it just works and is very easy to work with for the average Joe. I still have copies of Mint 17 and 18 scattered about on various machines. But Firefox started nagging me that Mint 18 was no longer supported... It's fun to look over all the old stuff I tend to store on my Desktop. I save it and import it manually to a new OS install.
