securitybreach Posted October 10, 2021 Posted October 10, 2021 I was thinking of this over telnet: 1 Quote
wa4chq Posted October 10, 2021 Author Posted October 10, 2021 I remember it but I never did telnet.... 1 Quote
securitybreach Posted October 10, 2021 Posted October 10, 2021 There was a server that streamed the movie via telnet. You just telnet servername and watched it in a terminal. Quote
securitybreach Posted October 10, 2021 Posted October 10, 2021 Yup just open up a terminal and run: telnet towel.blinkenlights.nl Quote
securitybreach Posted October 10, 2021 Posted October 10, 2021 Welp, nevermind. It isn't connecting, must not be up anymore. Quote
wa4chq Posted October 10, 2021 Author Posted October 10, 2021 Is this anything like what you are talking about, SB? https://www.instructables.com/Renegade-BBS-in-Ubuntu-Linux-Telnet-Multi-Node/ Quote
securitybreach Posted October 11, 2021 Posted October 11, 2021 Nah, that is something different altogether. This was simply a telenet server that had one function, stream star wars in ASCII art. Quote
securitybreach Posted October 11, 2021 Posted October 11, 2021 That's to create a BBS (bulletin board system) . I ran those back in the 1980s. Quote
wa4chq Posted October 11, 2021 Author Posted October 11, 2021 OK...I am not familiar with telnet. So it's just a "board" folks would check in on and post/read posts? Quote

Think of telnet as a simplistic ssh server or a simple interactive terminal server. Telnet is an application protocol used on the Internet or local area network to provide a bidirectional interactive text-oriented communication facility using a virtual terminal connection. User data is interspersed in-band with Telnet control information in an 8-bit byte oriented data connection over the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telnet 1 Quote

Unfortunately the telnet link never connects to the site these days. However you can watch the movie here, https://www.asciimation.co.nz/# Although you can stop, start,go back or forward on the ascimation site I do not think it is as neat as watching it in your terminal. 1 Quote

Copy the link and paste it in Lynx. Read what it says upper left corner. So grab a comfortable chair, have food and drink handy and wait for the film to start... 1 Quote
