Purhonen
My "Start button action" in the Start Menu Properties has SLEEP selected, but SHUTDOWN always appears. (I am able to manually select SLEEP) How can I get the default back to SLEEP? I suspect a recent update may have caused this, but I'm not sure. I run Windows 7 SP1 on an HP notebook. Purhonen
TN Changing Windows 7 Shutdown Button This will show you how to change that. Thanks LilBambi, but this is exactly what I did and nothing changed. Just for kicks I tried selecting several of the other options (Log off, Lock, Restart, Sleep, Hibernate, etc.) and when I press the Start button, the Power Button Action always reverts to Shutdown. Any other ideas?
ebrke
Maybe check group policies? (User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Start Menu and Taskbar)
Purhonen
Maybe check group policies? (User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Start Menu and Taskbar) Thanks ebrke. I checked this and the following was posted (which tells me nothing new really): Change Start Menu power button This policy setting allows you to set the default action of the power button on the Start menu. If you enable this policy setting, you can choose one of the following available options:Shut Down, Sleep, Log off, Lock, Restart, Switch User, or Hibernate. By default, Shut Down is the default action.
ebrke
Sorry--if group policies didn't work, I'm afraid I'm out of ideas right now.

Purhonen
Have you looked in Power Plan in the Control Panel? Thanks zlim, unfortunately the setting you identified was already set to SLEEP.
Guest LilBambi
The default mode for Shutdown doesn't necessarily change the name of Shutdown. But if you hover over the Shutdown Button it will show you the default action you chose for Shutdown. Doesn't that help?
zlim
When you press the power button, what happens?

I checked Windows Update and I had one (lingering) update I hadn't noticed before when I was checking my update history. I installed it and the Shutdown Button returned to my default setting of Sleep. Thanks for all your time; very much appreciated.
