abarbarian
Well I had a bit of luck in that the family gave me a bundle of loot for me 60th burpday. Spent a while deciding what was the most needed and useful thing to buy with all the loot. In the end I decided that a new tv would be the best bang for the buck. So I bought a 42 " smart tv to replace my perfectly working crt tv. This is the first time in me life I have ever bought a new tv. An it is great. Setting it up in Windows to play games and watch vids took a few moments. Great picture and sound from the tv. An most importantly no lag in games. So far so good. Linux, that is me Arch 64 set up has not been so easy. I would like to set up the tv as a clone of the desktop. I managed to set up the tv as a clone of the desktop but the settings did not survive a reboot. I have managed to set up the tv as "Right of" the desktop. So when I move the mouse on the desktop to the right of the screen it then appears on the tv. I can play vids on the tv with vlc but there is no sound output from the tv, sound comes through the headphones on the pc. These settings do not survive a reboot either. I tried to follow the Arch Wiki but it is not at all clear to follow the instructions there, at least for an inexperienced user like me. I made a "/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-monitor.conf" as per the wiki at least I think I did. I have tried using the "nvidia-settings" gui and that looks ok , at least I think it does. I am now lost in the quicksand at nvidia flats. Help. where am I hello help /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-monitor.conf Section "ServerLayout" Identifier "DualScreen" Screen 0 "Screen0" Screen 1 "Screen1" Option "Xinerama" "0" EndSection Section "Monitor" Identifier "Monitor0" Option "Enable" "true" EndSection Section "Monitor" Identifier "Monitor1" Option "Enable" "true" EndSection Section "Device" Identifier "Device0" Driver "nvidia" Screen 0 EndSection Section "Device" Identifier "Device0" Driver "nvidia" Screen 1 EndSection Section "Screen" Identifier "Screen0" Device "Device0" Monitor "Monitor0" DefaultDepth 24 Option "TwinView" "0" SubSection "Display" Depth 24 Modes "1920x1200_59.95" EndSubSection EndSection Section "Screen" Identifier "Screen1" Device "Device1" Monitor "Monitor1" DefaultDepth 24 Option "TwinView" "0" SubSection "Display" Depth 24 Modes "1920x1080_50.00" EndSubSection EndSection /etc/X11/xorg.conf # nvidia-settings: X configuration file generated by nvidia-settings # nvidia-settings: version 325.15 (buildmeister@swio-display-x64-rhel04-03) Wed Jul 31 19:04:13 PDT 2013 # nvidia-xconfig: X configuration file generated by nvidia-xconfig # nvidia-xconfig: version 325.15 (buildmeister@swio-display-x64-rhel04-03) Wed Jul 31 19:04:27 PDT 2013 Section "ServerLayout" Identifier "X.org Configured" Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0 InputDevice "Mouse0" "CorePointer" InputDevice "Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard" Option "Xinerama" "0" EndSection Section "Files" ModulePath "/usr/lib/xorg/modules" FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/misc/" FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/TTF/" FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/OTF/" FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/Type1/" FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/100dpi/" FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/75dpi/" EndSection Section "Module" Load "dbe" Load "glx" # Load "dri2" Load "extmod" Load "record" EndSection Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Keyboard0" Driver "kbd" Option "XkbOptions" "terminate:ctrl_alt_bksp" EndSection Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Mouse0" Driver "mouse" Option "Protocol" "auto" Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice" Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5 6 7" EndSection Section "Monitor" Identifier "Monitor0" VendorName "Unknown" ModelName "DELL 2407WFP" HorizSync 30.0 - 83.0 VertRefresh 56.0 - 76.0 EndSection Section "Device" ### Available Driver options are:- ### Values: <i>: integer, <f>: float, <bool>: "True"/"False", ### <string>: "String", <freq>: "<f> Hz/kHz/MHz", ### <percent>: "<f>%" ### [arg]: arg optional #Option "SWcursor" # [<bool>] #Option "HWcursor" # [<bool>] #Option "NoAccel" # [<bool>] #Option "ShadowFB" # [<bool>] #Option "VideoKey" # <i> #Option "WrappedFB" # [<bool>] #Option "GLXVBlank" # [<bool>] #Option "ZaphodHeads" # <str> #Option "PageFlip" # [<bool>] Identifier "Card0" Driver "nvidia" EndSection Section "Device" Identifier "Device0" Driver "nvidia" VendorName "NVIDIA Corporation" BoardName "GeForce GTX 460" EndSection Section "Screen" # Removed Option "metamodes" "DVI-I-2: nvidia-auto-select +0+0, DVI-I-3: nvidia-auto-select +0+0" Identifier "Screen0" Device "Device0" Monitor "Monitor0" DefaultDepth 24 Option "RegistryDwords" "PowerMizerEnable=0x1; PerfLevelSrc=0x3322; PowerMizerDefaultAC=0x1" Option "Stereo" "0" Option "metamodes" "DVI-I-2: nvidia-auto-select +0+0, DVI-I-3: nvidia-auto-select +1920+0" Option "SLI" "Off" Option "MultiGPU" "Off" Option "BaseMosaic" "off" SubSection "Display" Depth 24 EndSubSection EndSection

securitybreach
Well I have not used Nvidia in years but I did see this on the wiki page: Warning: As of August 2013, Xinerama is broken when using the proprietary NVIDIA driver from 319 upwards. Users wishing to use Xinerama with the NVIDIA driver should use the NVIDIA 313 driver, which works only with Linux kernels earlier than 3.10. See this thread for more information. https://wiki.archlin...ltiple_monitors When I used nvidia with multiple monitors. I always used nvidiasettings to setup my displays but when I tried to add a tv to the mix, I never had much luck. Does nvidiasettings let you setup the tv monitor? abarbarian
I have had output to the tv in two different ways on Arch so it can be done. I seem to be missing a little tweak or two. The "nvidia-settings" shows up the tv with various functions applicable, but any options I choose never seem to save. I seem to remember that I ran the linux driver before I changed over to the nvidia one and that you have to jump a lot of hoops to do the change. Maybe I messed up there. Though as I have had some sucess that line of enquiry may be a red herring. I may have to join that G+ gruop that someone seems to be promoting around here. Maybe they can help. Well we now have 23,686 members. Not bad considering the group is less than a year old (Myself and another created it on December 2nd 2012). sunrat
The "nvidia-settings" shows up the tv with various functions applicable, but any options I choose never seem to save. You may need to run nvidia-settings as root to make it save.
securitybreach
You may need to run nvidia-settings as root to make it save. Oh yeah, you have to run nvidia-settings as root. Otherwise it cannot write to the /etc/X11/ directory to save the changes.
abarbarian
Ok so I missed the run as root. Have now done so and I can get tv out automatically. problem is tv output has a bit chopped of the bottom. Also with nvidia-settings I can only get the tv as a screen on the right/left/ etc but not as a clone. So I gave up and tried arandr and zarfy which both let me clone. Still have the problem of a chopped of screen on the tv. Guess I'll have to have another go at this another day.
