Bruno
YES, yes ! DHL finaly delivered my pre-ordered Mandrake 9.1 PowerPack today. Bravo. bravo for DHL The online tracking system told me it did arrive from Paris at their Amsterdam distri-center yesterday morning at 5.34 AM, it *only* took them 35 hours to get it across town ! ( ???? it was marked "EXTREMELY URGENT", but then who cares . . ??? ) The PowerPack: 7 CD's full of goodies, a 264 page manual, a quickstart guide, 60 day's support and all that wrapped in a nice designed box ! You get your money's worth ! ( The dollar was cheap at the time and I got 20% off because of my Club membership ) The new hardware: I've got 2 new 3com 3c905 NIC's to replace the old cheap nic's that were buggy. A 48x CDRW to replace the 16x one that will be transfered to the P1 VectorLinux computer. And 30 mtr. utp cable to do a better wire job. O.K. here is the plan: Today I'll do a serious back-up job, the most important data will be uploaded to the net, transfered to the VectorLinux box and burned to CD ( yes tripple backup, better safe then #$%@*??!!!&! ) For the bulk of the data a CD backup will do. Tomorrow, I'll go shopping: coffee, pizza's, cans of soda and for celebrating the succesfull transit a nice bottle of Irish whiskey ! Saturday, after a good night sleep and some stong coffee, I'll take the system down, re-shuffle all partitions on the 2 60G HD's from this box and replace the old hardware with the new. Drink some coffee, and will open the Vector Box to give it the old CDRW. Finish my coffee and re-install Knoppix on the Drake box followed by an old copy of Slackware 8,0 that never got out of it's wrapping. Both distro's and a /backup-section go to hdb. ( hda is all Mandrake ) Then I'll make some more coffee ! The next step will be to insert the first 9.1 CD in the computer and a pizza in the microwave ( hope I'll get that right ! ) Eating my pizza, drinking soda I'll just keep feeding my box CD 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7. Mandrake install is a breeze, I've done every one of them with my eyes closed since 7.1 More coffee, download the 100+ MB bugfixes and updates, getting the network back up and making Vector, Drake and Whimp98 talk to eachother. Restoring back-ups, mail, bookmarks, music, do a few little tweaks and then it's time to log in at Scot's forum again and open the bottle of "Paddy" ! Bruno
UPDATE: In spite keeping up with all those posts on the forum, I managed to squeeze some time in to make the backups, I'm sure I've forgotten some important file somewhere, but I'll deal with that when it will hit me on the head ! Lucky me I, can post , play some relaxing music and backup at the same time, sending a job to the background, hé that would be another great topic for the 'starter' thread ! I've got 24 CD's ( most of them with mp3/ogg's ), uploaded 18MB on the Net and transferred 730MB to the Vector Computer . . . . hmmm, must have forgotten something . . . . . well as always it will come to me as soon as I lay down in a few hours. Don't worry, I'll keep you posted. Bruno
Bruno
UPDATE: Well, the shopping is done, got food and drink for a week. I did read all the doc's and manuals and feel fully prepared for the ultimate survival adventure. They say the weather will be real lousy tomorrow, so hey, won't miss anything major ! Took the microwave out of the kitchen and placed it in top of the case, maybe I should check with Jeber parhaps he's got some advice . . . . he might have some handy tricks up his sleeve. To be fully motivated and to stay that way 'till the end, I did put the bottle of "Paddy" there where I can see it ! If you never hear from me again you'll know that I failed or got my head toasted in the microwave. . . . . Bruno
henderrob
Remember... pizza=microwave.... remember, especially after you crack the bottle of Irish Whiskey. I'm a new standard level club member too, but I haven't figured out how to use their download site yet.If your experience is really good I might spring for the boxed Personal set. Cheers,
Bruno
@ henderrob: LOLI only buy boxed versions to support the distro. ( I think a good distro deserves my support. )As a Club Member you do the same and can download in a special "Club" section. There you can also download most of the software included in the 7 CD's.The real advantage of boxed versions is, aswell for the "Personal" as the "PowerPack" that it installs the Nvidia drivers and RealPlayer and other stuff by default. ( that is if you've got a Nvidia card ). ( install of the Nvidia drivers has been / still is a real pain for most users ! ) Bruno

Bruno
UPDATE: Sat May 3rd - 17:48 CET After a good night sleep and some strong coffee I started this morning at 11.30 AM. First the hardware, repartitioning and then installed Knoppix 3.1 and Slackware 8.1 on the second HD, after that Mandrake 9.1 on the first HD. All installs went super sweet, only Slack has a little problem with eth0 and the X server, but I´ll take care of that tomorrow. All installs were finished by 14.30 PM, time to attack the pepperoni pizza ! First action on the 9.1 was UPDATES, imagine 216 MB bugfixes and security updates . . . . . what were those French thinking ? Imagine having a dial-up ! After updating is was time to make a bootdisk ( you all did make one did you ?! ) The Galaxy theme is very nice, but I hate those icons . . quickly set them back to the 9.0 ones ! Also I noticed that again there are only 4 screensavers installed, will have to install kdeartwork again to get my science-screensaver back. Anyway lots of things to tweak, first get my favorite systemmonitors Gkrellm, and configure them, configure Evolution for my mail, import the back-upped bookmarks in Galeon and register my box at Mandrakesoft. Plenty more tweaking to do. Printer, sound, network all is 100%, what a day ! I´m sitting here with a big grin on my face and will open the bottle of ¨Paddy¨ in a minute, first check my mail and login at Scot´s Newsletter Forum ! Bruno"Bruno's Great Adventure" I know you're having a wonderful time. Best of good fortune to you. Since you mentioned "Gkrellm", is there an add-on for it that shows different temperatures (CPU, fans, case)? Haven't been able to locate one, or maybe it's there, and I just haven't seen it yet. Anyway, keep us posted on your quest.

Bruno
Fran:Me hardware spec´s are somewhere in a thread ¨what are your specs¨ . . but I can´t find the thread right now ! So I´l try to give a summary here:Computer 1:ECS K7S5A, 1700+ ADM, 2x 60 G Maxtor 7200rpm, sis 900 NIC, 3Com 3c905 NIC, Lite-on 48x CDRW, Sony 16x DVD, Logitech cordless desktop Comfort ( with mouse )Computer 2+3 :Old 133 and 233 mmx P1, with a lot of old crap in it !Gave my P3 to my daughter.UPDATE: ( the hick-up´s ) It seems I can´t import my addresses from the old Evolution in the new version, hat´s a bummer ! Guess I have to temporary load Mandrake 9.0 on the Slack partition, import the addresses and transfer them to 9.1. After the job is done I´ll restore Slack and fix the config at the same time. But, . . . . hic . . . that´s not. . . . hic. . . . for today. . . . hic ! Oooh the ¨Paddy¨ !!! Bruno
Guest LilBambi
Bruno --As thorough as you are, I knew it had to be out there somewhere! :)But thanks for posting here for us.Ah, the 'ole paddy is having it's proper effect it ... just what the Doctor ordered after the Evolution wrinkle ;)BTW: Have you gone to the Evolution site to see if there is a utility to do that; they are usually pretty good about that sort of thing...at least between their own versions...might be worth a shot to check that first. Then you wouldn't have to redo Slack
Bruno
Dear Fran:You´ll never guess, I could import the old mail in Evolution (500+) and just copied all the adresses from there ! Bruno
FIRST: Fran and Quint, please excuse me if I did behave a bit off or inappropriate last night, guess the bliss of the smooth installs got me a little to euphoric. ( was not the Paddy ! ) Here is what I think of Mandrake 9.1, it does look nice, a bit too trendy though, but then the 9.0 really got under my skin. The new versions of some apps are a bit buggy, but I guess the comming updates will take care of that. Example: printing from OpenOffice is smooth, however Kword crashes as you want to print a document. My 9.0 did have did not ever have any crash. ( after the first series of updates )The new version of Galeon is far less configureable then the one before, and even that one lost some to the version before ( might switch to Mozilla ). Evolution, well I wrote you about my ¨addresses¨ adventures. The Mandrake Control Center works fine, but looks like plastic. Shutdown with the MultiMedia key´s still poses a problem ( see ¨Tips for Linux Starters¨ ). Supermount is 100% now. The links in e-mail open by default in Mozilla and I don´t manage to find the file where I can change it to Galeon. Mplayer is included on the CD´s that does save a lot of trouble with missing dependencies, but some skins are definitely buggy ! Like in 9.0, KDE has only 4 (3 ) screensavers, I did mention that before ( kdeartwork package solves this problem ). Gnu Cash and K3b are included, I think that´s a good move. There are nice wallpapers available in KDE and the Galaxy theme is very slick. So, in a nutshell: give us some more bugfixes and we´ll be able to give a really good review of the new 9.1 ! quint
Bruno,Great first impressions; look forward to hearing your detailed analysis. Mplayer is included on the CD´s that does save a lot of trouble with missing dependencies, but some skins are definitely buggy !Glad you made note of this; have not been able to install this, as it gives me an error message (that I can't remember the exact words of). Should I just d/l it from Mandrake soft, and try that way? Don't get any other errors, and the rest of that CD has never given me any problems. TIA.Happy that your installation, et. al. is going well.
Bruno
Quint,It came all from CD 1 and 3, you should have the same, just type ¨mplayer¨ in the searchfield of the softwaremanagement page in the MCC, it should spit up 5 or 6 rpm´s and a bunch of dependencies ( also on your CD ).There should not be any problem. If there is come back to me ! Bruno
Bruno
Quint:I just had a ¨brainwave¨ I think I know what you mean with the error messages !If you select one of the packages in the Mandrake Control Center you get a popup saying that you´ll ¨need the following dependencies¨ with a large list of files. Just say YES here and it will install those as well, fully automatic ! If I remember correctly it happens on 2 of the 5 packages you select. All should go well after that. Bruno
UPDATE:I had this problem, I really do like Evolution for my mail and it used to open the links send to me in am e-mail in Galeon, a nice little fast browser. Suddenly with the new Mandrake 9.1 it opened the links in Mozilla, that´s a much slower browser. Yak !So I found the file to tweak ! Evolution is part of Gnome that was the direction to search . . . . More about this tomorrow in the Tips for Linux Starters thread ! BrunoBruno,You're exactly right...found the packages, selected them, window popped up saying it needed more files for compatibility, clicked OK, d/l, install, then error - corrupt file (libpostproc0-0.90-3plf.i586.rpm); began wondering what the heck...then it dawned on me to update the "plf" source. Success! Thanks for the advice. Configured Evolution - like it much better than OE, or Eudora. Installed the latest Firebird build for Linux - it is great; seems to be faster than the Windows version, but that may be due to my new-found interest/enjoyment of Linux. When clicking on links in Evolution, it opens in Firebird, not Mozilla (but I think that's because it's my chosen browser)?Looking forward to your next Linux Tips installment,

Bruno
UPDATE: Reading some more about Slackware told me I had to configure my XF86Config, well that´s what I did. Conclusion after first attempt: 8.1 is a to ¨old¨ distro to support my hardware. I´ll get myself the 9.0 Slackware that hit the mirrors a month ago, sure my hardware would be supported in that one. Debian, ( Knoppix on HD ) is very nice, so many apps installed by default, I can see myself having a nice swing with this distro. Did a few ¨look and feel¨ tweaks, some eye-candy is essential ! On my Drake I installed ¨Celestia¨ an astonishing astronomy program, ( had this on my 9.0 too ). Stellarium has a bug, so does not want to start, I guess I will install my old copy of Xplns ( also astronomy ) if they wait to long with the fix for it. And I found a HD version of the Rute doc´s ( also available on line: http://wwwacs.gantep.edu.tr/linux/rute/ ) the bible for Linuxers on the commercial app´s CD. I have bundles of fun with my 3 completely different disto´s on one box, can access files from one to the other, use a wallpaper stored in Drake as background in Debian . . bliss !
