Hi folks!

First I'll tell you what I need, and then tell you the story of what happened. Fair enough? Perhaps the problems can be tackled one at a time.

I have a laptop, HP dv7, 64, Win7Pro, I dual-boot both Linux and Window, using a seperate HD for the Linux, on an external USB hard drive. This now will the object of my discusion. Here's what I need, and also, I've been told to go pound sand by the vendors, unless I come up with a lot of cash, which I don't have.

I need a driver for the fingerprint reader for logging into the computer, instead of typing in my password and user name.

I need a BlueRay BD disk player driver. Windows killed it when it updated the OS, and I can't find an alternalte way for a repplacement driver for the HP laptop.

I need to find the sound in a newly installed version of Windows7Pro. It got wiped out when I was downloading different applications to setup the machine. I can't seem to trace the source where the sound got cut off. It worked initially, when the machine was cherry, but one of the applications somehow killed it.

And now here's what happened.

One fine morning, I found that the internal Blue Ray DVD player not working. Since the BD driver was missing it did work as an ordinary DVD r/w player. After a few days of pondering of what to do, I finally decided to call HP and send me a replacement BD drive. When I received it, I installed it in the laptop. Still no joy! The replacement, was doing the same thing as the original. My deduction: It must be the mother board, SIGH! I called HP again and told them what happened, and they refused to work out an arrangement for a partial refund or something. I guess that you can imagine what their respose was! Yep, I got stuck and had to pay the shipping charge, the sales tax, and the ripoff price for their replacement drive. So now, their replacem drive sits in the laptop, useless. However, I still need a BD driver, since I have and external USB connected BD drive.

Two days later, the internal hard drive crashed! I got a good deal for a 1TB hd from Staples with the coupons and all. They shipped the replacement the following day. This the one that I had to install a fresh version of Windows7Pro. The one that came from the factory, never sent me a DVD for backup. And the recovery directory on the old drive is no longer accessable because of the crash.

Lastly, the elusive sound. How do I get that back without having to reinstall the whlole OS again? It's not a hassle to install the OS from the disk, that takes very little time. The problem's being is all that lost time doing all the tweaks and setups afterwards. It is not very appeealing to do a re-run of that project, all over again.

Does anyone know of where the file(s) are located in the OS or in the DVD, that could be run to make the sound come back again? Or is that a lost cause?

I deleted most of the unwanted applications that came hidden with the one application(s) that I needed. I once again re-discovered that Windows is pollution heaven. And it's worse now that what I remember from before. They all try to install a tool bar in the bowser. If they had their way, there would be no room to view the desired material in the browser. And those popups are devastating!

However deleting the riff-raff did not clear up the sound problem.

All suggestions are welcome.

Cheers!

?? You apparently have a MS win7 install dvd? So what you appear to be missing is motherboard drivers? And you can't download those from HP? That seems very odd.

As for reloading and saving your setup tweaks, I urge you to learn how to use images [Ghost, whatever] -- and make them in stages as you reload and setup. You'll only have to do this once, after which you can very quickly reload.

I downloaded and burned a win7+sp1 dvd from Digital River, doesn't have all the commercial garbage on it. You can install from it using your machine's sticker number, would save all that removal of unwanted apps.

Thanks for the tips. This sound thing is driving me crazy! It seems ok when I check out the setup, except for system sounds. I ran a multimedia application, and borrowed my wife's music CD, and the sound and video was perfect. However, the system sounds don't come out, The sound is missing when running a UTUBE video, or a video in a browser.

One thing that I found is that the ACTIVE-X is failing to install itself during the MS updates. This has happened twice now. I don't know how to cope with that, and it could be a partial reason why the sound problem is not getting cured.

I spent a lot of hours setting up Windows tweaks and setups. Don't look forward to a repeat performance.

Also, I had done some backups, but when the old drive, nose-dived I can[t seem to be able to use those didks for recovery. And yes, Windows comes with a lot of junk, which I removed. However, my problem was compounded when I was on the Internet downloading things like ZoneAlarm, and other applications which are useful. A lot of hidden files get sneaked in with those applications. And they popup "in-your-face", while trying to get some work done. It was out of hand! I was losing it! My patience was fast running out.

Cheers!

It wasn't W7 that came with the c*ware , it was HP.

That being said, have you run the W7 troubleshooting wizards? Are all devices showing as being present and working when looking through device manager? Are you sure the system sounds have not been muted?

There is nothing that is muted. Looking at the parameters of what I've been chasing, shows that "this item is working". I got sound when doing the setup, but not for the system sounds (beeps, boops, bleeps, ..). Past the setup, the sound goes where???. Using a multimedia application, there, everything works fine, for all cd's, and dvd's. There is no sound for the Flash Player, andoccasionally, some flash applications playing in the browser, the setup icon hides the running action, and I can't shut it dow. Looking eleswhere, when I checked the Windows updates, I noticed two failures for the ACTIVE to install. I suspect that this may have something to do with the sound, somehow. I can't seem to get ActiveX to get installed.

You will have to excuse the appearance of this post. This application here, is screwing up royally. The caracters are scrolling from right to left! I'm going to have to sign off for now. I thought that only the Arabs wrote from right to left.

PS

Well ain't that something! After I posted this, everything lined up properly. It was putting the period at the beginning of the line, and everything was being written right to left, all of a suddoen. And no! I wasn't drinking!

Cheers!

start (globe)

r click "computer"

click "manage"

expand "device manager"

look for yellow exclamation points - those un-named items need device drivers.

go to support.hp.com, armed with your pc's serial number. enter that on the hp website. download sound drivers that it lists. load them. done.

Did you really mean "control panel"? I went there and clicked on "device manager". There, I found yellow marks on: MS virtual port WIFI adapter. = Windows cannot load drivers. Then I went to "Unknown" It has something to do with USB. = No driver. Next, was "Light Sensor" = no driver to be found. After that, Sound = ADS Instant HDTV PCI = this cannot be started (more than likely this is my source of the problem). Also, according to the WINDOWS UPDATES, ActiveX can't be updated. I tried several times, with all failures. Because of loss of sound, no sound in Adobe Flash movies. Pictures work ok.

Cheers!

I'll ty try to find the drivers at HP again. I need someting for sound, and the fingerprint reader.

Hello,

What is the exact model number of your Hewlett-Packard dv7 notebook computer? The model number is probably located on a sticker on the bottom of the unit (or maybe behind the battery) and looks something like dv7-0000xx, dv7t-0000, dv7z-0000 and so forth.

Hi,

The exact model number = DV7-4153CL, product #: XH103UAR

i finally found the exact Internet site at HP for this model. I downloaded the drivers that I thought I could use.

I did chase the sound. And boy! It took a long time to finally succeed. It was a combination in the sound setup section, in selecting the speaker and the HDMI as the default. I selected both, and kept on twiddling with the different options, 'till the system sounds came up, and the regular sounds so I could use the UTUBE videos. The new replacement BD player suddenly decided to run.

Now, I still have to find out why ActiveX can't be installed and run.

I found the driver for the fingerprint reader, but can't get it to run, and can't find any further information on that, unless I shell out more that $50.00 to HP tech support, which I can't afford to throw money down the toilet that way.

The MS Virtual Mini Port, won't load the driver, as shown in the Device Manager.

The most important in the things that don't run at the moment is the fingerprint reader. Then I suppose is the ActiveX problem, and last is the Virtual Mini Port. I can't understand why the drivers cannot be installed and run.

HP supervisor called me to find out how I was doing with the BD player. I told him, and he said that the following day, he and his tech. support would call back. He told me that he would also help me with the other problems besides the BG dvd player. It was proven once more that they talk with a forked tongue! The followind day telephone call never materialized. I was left on my own.

If you could dig up the solution(s) with the remainder problems, I'd really appreciate it.

Cheers!

Why not just go here

http://h10025.www1.h...product=4323584

click the button that says Scan now and have it find both out of date and missing drivers?

I went there, and tried to scan for bad or missing drivers. It just kept on going in circles, checking my system and then "yes. we found two machines that you have". It was the computer and the printer. I never got response about the drivers. It just kept on doing the loop that I just mentioned. I again found the driver for the fingerprint reader. I downloaded it again. Tried to install it, and the error said that I have downloaded a corrupt file. I tried it three times, and always the same results. What's a guy to do? Another brick wall.

I found the HP help application. As I'm typing this, it is supposed to be setting itself up, and then scan my machine for updates and missing whatnot. This still left to be seen. Wish me luck!

Things have drastically changed on the site. All I did was to click to start a topic, and that's where I ended up. I though that was strange, but then, I don't run the show. I've found it harder to get around this site, than the way it was setup before.

Cheers!

Hello,

First, check in the BIOS to make sure the Fingerprint reader is enabled.

Next, is support for the fingerprint reader under Control Panel Hardware and Sound Biometric Devices enabled? If so, try running the Device Manager (filename: DEVMGMT.MSC) and then downloading and unpacking—but not running—the Validity Fingerprint Sensor Driver you downloaded from Hewlett-Packard's web site.

When prompted by the Device Manager, choose the Browse my computer for a driver option, and enter "C:\SWSETUP\SP55636\Driver" as the directory from which to install the device drivers.

At that point, you may be up and running. If not, try running the "C:\SWSETUP\SP55636\ValiditySensorsSetup.exe" file to install or make any additional changes.

If that doesn't work, you may want to check with Validity, the manufacturer of the fingerprint reader, to see if they have any tricks or tips for getting the fingerprint reader up and running, or even check Hewlett-Packard's support forums, should they offer such a thing.
