Hacking Expert David Chalk Joins Urgent Call to Halt Smart Grid - MarketWatch

 

The vulnerability of the energy industry's new wireless smart grid will inevitably lead to lights out for everyone, according to leading cyber expert David Chalk. In an online interview for an upcoming documentary film entitled 'Take Back Your Power' ( www.ThePowerFilm.org ), Chalk says the entire power grid will be at risk to being taken down by cyber attack, and if installations continue it's only a matter of time.

I am very happy that an expert has come forward to openly not only discuss this but make it understood in no uncertain terms that the 100% that it is an inevitability that in today's world, the SmartGrid being hacked is a foregone conclusion it has no protection AND is on the Internet!

 

It is a cool technology but too dangerous in a terror, malware and more often than not, being part of a very unfair world. A very bad combination.

I can't believe they would trust something as important as the power grid to something as vulnerable as software controls. I hope they aren't going to run it with MS Windows.

A smart grid is a digitally enabled electrical grid that gathers, distributes, and acts on information about the behavior of all participants (suppliers and consumers) in order to improve the efficiency, importance, reliability, economics, and sustainability of electricity services.^{[citation needed]}

Smart grid policy is organized in Europe as Smart Grid European Technology Platform.^[1] Policy in the United States is described in 42 U.S.C. ch.152 subch.IX § 17381.

Roll-out of smart grid technology also implies a fundamental re-engineering of the electricity services industry, although typical usage of the term is focussed on the technical infrastructure.

 

I think I watched the video LilBambi was referring to. A lot of scary FUD is being spread, I think.

 

The guy was talking about the electric companies installing the smart meters at houses. He claims that they are an invasion of privacy, because the electric grid operators could see what demand the house was putting currently on the grid. Frankly, the smart grid would *need* that information so the right amount of power could be distributed to the right areas, avoiding brownouts/blackouts, etc.

 

He calls it an invasion of privacy, because the electric utility people could tell if you were home based on your usage (a guess at best), and be able to tell what appliances are running (another guess based on short term usage data).

 

I would really say in this case that the idea of a smart meter being an invasion of privacy is quite a stretch.

I was only able to read the Research page, not view the video so I have no comparison regarding the video or how they are portraying these things in the video.
