Grasshopper
It's been a while since I've done any serious partitioning and my wife and I both now run XP home.My question is, can you create new partitions (as in for what was mentioned earlier--partitions for email, music, MyDocs, etc.) after you've already got everthing running? I don't mind backing up my stuff and reinstalling and doing it right from the beginning, but my wife probably wouldn't appreciate a complete teardown. So is it possible to already have everything set up and running and do the repartitioning with XP management console? Thanks,Allen

Frank
It is possible but with third party programs such as "Partition Magic" etc...I'm thinking about buying a utility called System Commander to do some partitioning. Do you know anything about that utility?

Guest ThunderRiver
Both afore-mentioned programs work quite well. Now if you like me broke with no money and also prefer to go for the legal way, you can always grab a copy of Slackware or some sorts of Linux distro. The partitioning utility in there is free.Of coruse, I can always find my way with a copy of PartitionMagic 8 (eh don't ask..)
akorvemaker
I've been using an old version of PowerQuest's ParitionMagic. It has worked very well for me. It easily and safely creates and resizes partitions (but do a backup just in case).I've also heard good things about VCOM's Partition Commander. Does anyone have any experience with it?One nice thing about Partition Commander is that it can be booted and run from the CD (no installation) if that's what you choose. Skimming the PartitionMagic page I couldn't tell if it offered that feature.
mac
Allen,From the Partition Magic 8.0 Manual:"You can run a DOS version of PartitionMagic or the BootMagic configuration programfrom the PartitionMagic CD if your computer has the ability to boot from a CD. If yourcomputer cannot boot from a CD, PowerQuest recommends that you create rescuediskettes at the end of the PartitionMagic installation."Great program!Mac

It is PCDOS boot disks that boot off a nice graphical user interface for partitioning. akorvemaker, you said you are using an older version. Well, it really depends on how old it is. Only version 8 is compatible with the newest version of NTFS in Windows Xp
