Firewall: "Anti-Hacker" from Kaspersky Labs

This is the five-star review of the product that appears in Computer Shopper (UK) - issue 186"Personal firewall software is becoming increasingly necessary for home users, particularly those with always-on Internet connections. Kaspersky's Anti-Hacker stands above the competition because of its ease of use and power. The interface is simple to understand and the software itself is robust; one of only two products to successfully defend against one of our attack tests. Anti-Hacker is calm in the face of possible threats, quietly responding in the background rather than bombarding the user with hysterical warnings." -http://www.kaspersky.co.ukAny comments?Erichttp://www.legge40.freeserve.co.uk/BuyerBeware.htm

Bah! Just software security... if it can be installed and configured while online... it can be un-installed by someone else and possibily by someone without your permission. Security is only security if it must be disconnected from the network in order to be installed or configured. Think about that for a moment. If it is not disconnected then it becomes a useless brick. That is security!!!

Firewalls are supposed to make you invisible on the web. Only the sites you visit yourself should be able to know where you are.Surely the security testing sites such as ShieldsUp and PCFlank do their best to get past the firewall in the same ways as a hacker would?Computer Shopper's labs also throw everything they can at firewalls to be able to review them.Anyhow the "Anti-Hacker" firewall is available in the US because it is quoted as costing $39 on the page that offers information on it. The page was difficult to find on the main Kaspersky site, so I got it from their support. -http://www.kaspersky.com/buyonline.html?info=967571Eric,http://www.legge40.freeserve.co.uk/BuyerBeware.htm

So you are assuming then that firewall software can't be hacked...That virus scanning software always finds the bad viruses...IP packets can't be sniffed...IPs can't be spliced...Basiclly, that is is impossible for a determined hacker to thwart any software security you happen throw up...OK, I just wanted to be clear on that...

No, I am not saying that. There is no such thing as perfect security, but the kind of people with the expertise to hack into a system with good protection are not the kind of people who would attempt to hack into the average home user's system. They are almost always after bigger, more challenging meat such as bank and credit-card sites, etc. What you want to protect yourself against are the mindless amateurs who have no idea how to bypass a good software firewall backed up by a start-up monitor such as the one at http://www.mlin.net/. The goofballs with scanners that can wreak havoc on a system if they are allowed free access.BTW, I have e-mailed Computer Shopper to find out what the other firewall was that passed the test. I'll post the information here when I receive it.Eric,http://www.legge40.freeserve.co.uk/BuyerBeware.htm

Eric Legge --Hi, I haven't tried this particular software since we have two layers of firewalling already; OS level firewall on connection and zonealarm personnal firewall on Windows computers, etc.So I can't tell you too much about this particular product.I would like to hear from someone who has actually used the program too. Thanks for the question. ===NOTE: Let's keep this to discussion to the product, not directed at SFNL Forum members. Thanks

Here is the reply I got from Computer Shopper:Paul Sanders writes:Could you kindly tell me what the other firewall is that successfullydefended against one of your attack tests?Certainly,It is Norton Personal Firewall 2002. I've not tested 2003 yet, but I'mpretty certain it will also be OK. If you're interested, the results of mytesting are online at:http://www.transceiver.co.uk/txt/ppf.htmlRegards,Simon.---Simon EdwardsTechnical Editor, Computer ShopperDennis Publishing, 30 Cleveland Street, London, W1P 7HJEric,http://www.legge40.freeserve.co.uk/BuyerBeware.htm
