Some of you may have been following the Trials and Tribulations of Bruno'sMonumental efforts to get my Conexant Pci Adsl Modem into life under Mandrake 9.1. Unfortunatly not a success So in the cause of greater enlightenment.What do you use?Hodgy

Hodgy,did your ISP provide you with the PCI DSL modem? Even if they did I would recommend seeing if you can get them to send you an external ethernet DSL modem. That way you just have to hook a Cat 5 patch cable from your NIC to the modem. There are consumer DSL modems from 3Com, Linksys, etc. My ISP provides external Alcatel SpeedTouch DSL modems. The advantage of external modem is that you can then put a consumer firewall/router or a PC acting as a router between your Linux box and the modem and avoid all that hassle with configuring the modem; the router will deal with that. All you have to do on the Linux side is provide it with a non-public IP address (192.168.x.x/255.255.255.0 or 172.16.x.x/255.255.0.0 or 10.x.x.x/255.0.0.0) and the IP of the router as your gateway and you are all set.

Hi PeachyI bought my modem when i signed up for Adsl last August. The ISP were doing a promotion selling the Alcatel USB modem, but both my USB ports where occupied and the Pci card was half the priceso being "cautious" no contest really, There was the fact that i don't have a NIC either.and at the time -Linux I know about Linux , That's the Penguin Right! :DSo NIC's/ routers weren't considered.Might give it more thought know though Hodgy

Sorry to hear that.External ADSL modem is always better option and it works 100%.Problem is in companies not supporting Linux enough to write drivers.I insisted on external modem and made sure it's not USB one, but ethernet so I can hook up my router on it.This is just a suggestion, if you are able to get external modem from them and you can buy router really cheap these days.Benefit is you are protected better from outside world and any additional computer you get is easy to connect, just plug and play, no mater what system you are using.

Hi HodgyLike everybody here says: best is to buy an ADSL Ethernet-modem ( any ) and a NIC ( NIC´s are dirt cheap ) A real ethernet modem is a good investment.I have an Alcatel Speedtouch 4 ports Ethernet modem/router/switch/firewall ( like Peachy ) and a 3Com 3c905 NIC ( also SIS600 and a few others ) works like a dream.Here is a complete list of supported NIC´s, supported by Mandrake:
