  7. The Redmond crew is further alienating their greatest competitive advantage in the PC marketplace, their OEM partners. I think all the sharp marketing folks over there have either left the building or are running for cover with this one. It's going to be very hard in today's market to recover the level of participation and cooperation the Microsoft OEM Partner system once used to dominate the PC world.
  8. I installed Windows 8 on Friday. I used the Upgrade Assistant, which analyzed my Windows 7 laptop, and then allowed me to buy and launch the upgrade immediately. One thing to realize is that it is VERY VERY VERY DIFFERENT from what you are used to if you have used any version of Windows before. That being said, the Start screen is really nice. It is customizeable and presents and organizes info very nicely. I'm sure you've all seen screenshots of W8 before. You can turn on live titles (can be seen in the NY Times app and the Weather app) and can also make most tiles large (to take up two spaces) or small (taking up 1). The idea of "apps" may be a little foreign too. When you launch Mail (or any other Modern (Metro) app), it launches full screen. It's a big adjustment coming from a PC world where I'm used to having many applications open at once. In W8 you can still have the apps open--the taskbar is just missing from view. Hitting Win+tab brings the tray out from the left side with your other windows--continuing to hit tab will scroll through them. Alt+tab brings up the old app switcher, too. It's very clearly designed to be used on a tablet/other touch screen device. But I've been using a mouse with it just fine. Anyway, I didn't mean this to be a full fledged review, so I'll stop here. Has anyone else tried it? Is anyone using the release version? What are your thoughts? e: Also, it boots really, really fast
  9. I don't know about you, but I do not want my TV or video/DVD/Bluray player watching me while I watch whatever content I want to watch. I would not be able to relax to watch a movie under those conditions. They have no right to 'monitor' your viewing of anything. OK, so what am I talking about? CONTENT DISTRIBUTION REGULATION BY VIEWING USER - USPTO That's just the abstract! Check out the details; see in particular #1, #8, #15. This is so they can have content that can be 'licensed' but by the number of viewers in a room to see it. The only way they can prove that no one slips in to see it is to continuously monitor the room for additions during the viewing. This is totally nuts! They have no right to subject anyone to that kind of licensing. It is bad enough already. What a bunch of lunatics at Microsoft and the MPAA and other copyright holders if they think people will put up with this. But then again, look what many people will allow the TSA to do...nevermind... I am thoroughly disgusted that Microsoft would be a part of this at all. Shame on you Microsoft. And what's next? Now that they are allowed to 'monitor' you like Big Brother, what's next? Doesn't matter what you are watching, they can monitor you in your own home? Or at a bar, or restaurant? What about when you are watching at home; or have your TV/monitor on during the day or while you are cleaning, walking around your home not entirely clothed, or doing whatever you might want to do in your own home? Monitored just because the TV/Monitor is on? This is insane IMHO. No I am not kidding. This is insane thinking that Microsoft and the MPAA or whatever copyright holders are in on this.

    Microsoft Ditches Hotmail

Microsoft is retiring a brand that has been with it since 1997 - free web-based email service Hotmail - and folding it in under the familiar name 'Outlook'. Hotmail was one of the earliest popular web mail services, but in its time it has had to face off competition from Yahoo, AOL, and, of course, Google's Gmail. What this looks like is an attempt to consolidate its consumer and workplace brands - Hotmail was once an all powerful force on the web, and while there are still many active users, Redmond is aiming for the simplistic approach in Windows 8 and will want to bring both brands in under one name.
