Anyone using Skype with Linux since Aug 2014. If so what are you using as the Skype kit will no longer work with 3rd party utils. My son wants me to hook it up so he can talk to me.

I've got skype installed on Ubuntu 14.04 but I rarely use it. Worked great when I set it up, but haven't used it in months. What do you mean by "3rd party utils"?

May I assume that you are having issues, or is your son a linux user also? As an alternative, may I suggest Jitsi as a viable alternative? There are versions for Windows, Mac, and various linux distros, so it's a good choice for cross-platform users. Also compatible with a lot of different protocols and services (SIP), although Skype isn't one of them. The only reason I can think of to use Skype is because so many others have it. But Skype is free and Jitsi is free, so it costs nothing to "purchase" Jitsi and it costs nothing to abandon Skype. And a 2nd option is always a good idea.

Neat that they list Arch as one of their packages. I know it just links to the AUR page for the package but still neat that it was included in the Download page.

No I am not having issues yet, I am setting it up for the first time on Linux, but MS took over Skype in August of 2014 and threw a wrench in the works for many apps such as the Skype kit which is no longer supported and will not work. I installed it this morning and it did see my camera and the sound works. I just have to try it out when My son gets his new computer tomorrow with Windows 8.1 He does not use Linux Yet. Maybe I will take a look at Jitsi.

There are alternatives to Skype, Google Hangouts is one.

Yup, I use Google Hangouts on a daily basis (mostly chat but sometimes video too)

I'll have a peep at jitsi.

Installed it too. (well, Synaptic did it) Not too sure if I can pay to make calls to a normal phone number as I can with Skype.

Jitsi seems to have noted the cam but I hav'nt found the tools/options page yet.

I'll just give it and me some time.

I bought a new WebCam at bestbuy. Reg $39.95 for $19.99 It is a logitec with a built in mike 3 pixel and USB. I came home plugged it in and Skype recognized the Mic and Webcam. Skype is working great Now. I got skype from the repository for Mint 17 Set it up and all works great Video and sound.
