I'm gonna break down and get a new printer, but before I run out and buy one I am curious to know which ones people here are having great luck with in linux.I'm looking at this one:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16828104377 HP PSC 1410(Q7290A) Multifunction/All-In-One PrinterI don't want a long and complicated install - I hate printers, I think they are the most god awful pieces of hardware ever invented. All they ever seem to be is a headache.

I am an HP fan. I have an HP all in one hooked up to hubby's computer. I use another HP photo printer at school. Then at home, I have an HP color laser hooked up to my tower and then I run it through a wireless hubr for my laptop wireless.http://www.officedepot.com/ddSKU.do?level=...51616&An=browsehttp://www.officedepot.com/ddSKU.do?level=...51207&An=browsehttp://www.officedepot.com/ddSKU.do?level=...10324&An=browse

Over 20 years of owning a computer and I have only had HP printers except two - my recent disaster wtih a konika minolta and my very first was an okidata daisey wheel. I don't think I have every had an HP die, I just have passed them on..... Linux seems to like them too. B)

SUSE pegged my HP 1400 series all-in-one correctly and enabled all the functions. I, too, would recommend HP for Linux users.

Hi havnblast,I think you already know about these sites but I'll mention it for others visiting this thread that might not. The best site for checking printing compatibility is here:http://linuxprinting.orgIt now tells you about printing *and* scanning on multi-function devices. To be doubly sure, you can check the Scanner compatibility list:http://www.sane-project.org/Those are the most authoritative sites but of course each major distro has its own hardware compatibility list which usually doesn't list a lot. It tends to be better at telling you what is known not to work than what will. There are also generic lists, as well.To use this multi-function printer as an example:Can't find the PSC 1410, but here's the 1400 which is probably mostly the same:

Does not understand PCL as most other DeskJets/PSCs/OfficeJets, it uses the so-called "Lightweight Imaging Device Interface Language" (LIDIL), these printers are supported by the "hpijs" driver beginning from version 1.3. The driver supports resolutions only up to 600 dpi, head alignment settings stored in the printer are not made use of, so use a one-cartridge (CMY) printing mode in case of mis-alignments. Scanning works using the HPOJ low-level driver together with its SANE backend "hpoj". However, note that when using the current version (0.9) you can only scan, and when you don't use HPOJ at all you can only print. To fix this so you can both print and scan, you MUST install libusb and upgrade to the CVS version of HPOJ. Copying works fine from the front panel.
--- Lot more details at the webpage: http://linuxprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=HP-PSC_1400And at the SANE page I couldn't find any matches.Btw, I use an HP 310 now, an old portable inkjet. It works great, but it's black and white only and doesn't have a paper tray. It's only 300x300. I like it for one reason and one reason only - there's no paper tray. We live in a dusty environment (basement apartment) and have four cats and I print seldomly. Since the inkjet nozzle never sees the light of day, I never have to clean it which I had to with my HP 600. :thumbsup:I agree that HP printers usually have excellent compatibility with Linux. It's usually the multi-function stuff that can be a little picky. But it looks good here. Edited by linuxdude32

IMO.....I would stay away from the all-in-one machines.... I have seen on the PCLos development list that they are having a bunch of problems keeping those things working while updating packages. I have a stand alone laser that has no problems whatsoever, and a standalone scanner. Like I said, this is all my own personal opinion.

HPOJ and the other sourceforge project, I think HPLIP, seem to be pretty good managing the multifunctions, but you can run into trouble. I had my multifunction (HP1220) before I started with linux. I wound up starting and stopping the hpoj daemon manually as necessary in SuSE because if it started before CUPS when booting then you couldn't print, and although there were ways to get around that, it just seemed simpler to do it manually. It might be easier to go with the separate hardware, but it's not undoable with a multifunction.

I agree Ross but I am kinda short on space so if I can combine a few things it would help. All I can see myself doing is mainly using the printer in linux anyway and if I get the rest to work it will be just a pure bonus, lol.

Wow. Your experience seems to fix exactly with what http://linuxprinting.org talks about. Good to know they're accurate as compared with somebody's personal experience.
