securitybreach
So the trees do not have leaves in Spring where you live?
zlim
Josh, the trees don't have leaves in PA yet either! Magnolias are just starting to come in and our dogwood still is bare. Our "spring" has been February temps. We are running about 20 - 25 degrees below average in temperature. yesterday I was finally able to wear something besides corduroy or sweat pants.
raymac46
We normally expect the trees to start budding around the end of April.
ebrke
I'm in the same general area as Liz, and it's barely starting to be spring here. I did have some daffs come out, but the deer ate all but one of my hyacinths before they bloomed. I've sprayed the new hosta shoots hoping to keep the deer away from them. V.T. Eric Layton
Trees without leaves? Where do you guys live? Oh, yeah... up there in the GWN. I remember now.
securitybreach
Trees without leaves? Where do you guys live? Oh, yeah... up there in the GWN. I remember now. Yeah, we do not even lose leaves down here in the swamp..
V.T. Eric Layton
The only tree in my yard that loses all its leaves is my sweetgum. The oaks lose leaves, but never all of them. I'm a tree hugger. I have a yard full... 8 9 oaks, 1 sweetgum, 1 camphor, and a scrubby cabbage palm. Edit: Ooops! Missed one of the oaks. It's in my backyard. It's just a baby, though... 'bout 10' tall and 5" in diameter at the bottom.
raymac46
We don't sweat the pythons, water moccasins and hurricanes up here. That's worth raking a few leaves I think.

zlim
Winter is not a problem for those of us who spent 70 years dealing with snow. At least now, unlike when I was young, you get warnings 5 days in advance about how much, when it will arrive and when it will stop. Snow throwers also make snow removal much easier than shoveling. I spent one year without winter. I went from PA to HI then to 10 months in Australia (Aug thru May) and back to the US (June after a 30 day cruise). I found I really missed winter. V.T. Eric Layton
No big snakes in my yard, Ray. However, I'd have to agree with you on the hurricanes. Those I could do without.
raymac46
Winter is only a problem when you have to go out and drive in it - which I don't at my age. I have a guy with a big tractor and snow blower take care of my driveway. Freezing rain is the only thing I don't like. As far as the cold goes, I don't mind if I am dressed for it. I find the heat and humidity a lot harder to take than the cold. HVAC is a lot different here. You buy the most efficient furnace you can but the simplest AC system, since summer heat is less oppressive and doesn't last for weeks. I do miss the migratory birds though. It's pretty quiet here in January.
zlim
I'd rather have a Hurricane than a tornado. Of course, you don't get to pick and choose what Mother nature throws your way.
V.T. Eric Layton
Well, lucky you, Liz, because hurricanes spin up hundreds of tornadoes in their paths, which accounts for much of the damage. So, with hurricanes, you get the worst of both. Fun, huh? Oh, and all those tornadoes just LOVE trailer parks down here in Florida.
zlim
We've had some bad hurricanes in PA. (Hurricane Agnes in 1972). We've also had tornadoes here. This from 2015 destroyed a Christian elementary school fortunately no one was hurt or killed.
