Purhonen
I had a DIRECTV HR24 High Definition DVR Satellite Receiver which displayed a fatal error and I had to have the box replaced. I have heard that a hard drive recovery utility such as SpinRite (https://www.grc.com/sr/spinrite.htm) could possibly correct the hard drive errors. My problem is I don't know how to access the DVR's HD, and once accessed, how to connect it to a drive that would run the SpinRite program. Any ideas? V.T. Eric Layton
Steve, I'm still watching TV over the air with an outside antenna on my house, so I'm not going to be any help here. Be patient, though... one of the more techie types will pop in and try to help.

Steve The box should contain a standard hdd or ssd. So you should be able to take the box to bits to access it. Then you should be able to connect it to a pc and get to the files and folders. V.T. Eric Layton
WARNING! Tampering with the DVR provided by your cable/sat company is a SUPER BIG NO-NO! There are fines and other bad stuff involved when you break those seals.
zlim
I think you are wasting your time. Here's a thread from July 2016 but I've seen many over a few years. http://www.dbstalk.com/community/index.php?threads/how-do-you-get-the-actual-video-files-off-the-harddrive.222246/
Purhonen
Didn't make myself clear the first time around. I do NOT want to recover any files on the DVR's HD, I want to repair any errors which caused me to get the Fatal Error in the first place. If that can be fixed, then the disc should be usable. This is one of the key features of that program I mentioned, SpinRite, does. I think I need to do is what "abarbarian" suggested above (easier said than done!). Thanks
zlim
I also wouldn't pin hopes on Spinrite. Version 6.0, still current as of November 2016, was released in 2004. 12 year old technology has problems with drives that aren't magnetic and are large in size. Issues mentioned here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SpinRite It looks like the hard drive inside your DVR is a SATA drive.
