raymac46
I got an email from one of the seniors in the 'hood. His problem: It has to do with Windows attempting to do an update of Windows 10 on my computer and after more than one hour a message appears saying "Restoring your previous version of Windows". This has happened about 5 times over a 4 month period. I don't want to spend hours with this. I advised him to try the Windows 10 Update Troubleshooter first. Is this another case where a reset will be necessary? I think he's giving the process sufficient time but still fail.
Pete!
Is he updating to a new version (eg creators to fall creators)? If so, I had a similar problem. Solved it by updating via the "Media Creation Tool". https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 I didn't create any media, just went directly to "Upgrade this PC now" and followed the prompts. Much less hassle than an update that keeps getting "stuck".
raymac46
Media Creation Tool looks similar to Reset options you get to fix Windows 10. I assume that wipes out all installed programs like Microsoft Office and Chrome/Firefox. I know this guy loves his Outlook and has all kinds of emails he saves. If I do a Reset I hope with saving his data I can keep the .pst files he will have on his machine.

It's always wise to create a "restore point" when you do something drastic, but upgrading via the "Upgrade this PC now" function of the Media Creation Tool has always saved my installed programs, and data. Everything was right where I left it. Just like a normal upgrade, but without the frustration. Settings that were changed from their defaults, may revert to default. Corrine
A "restore point" won't be available with a version update (e.g., Windows 10 1703 to 1709) because the OS is essentially replaced. In fact, it is a good idea to go to Control Panel > All Control Panel Items > System > System Protection to ensure that System Restore is on after the upgrade. Pete!
I stand corrected on the restore comment, but I never had occasion to want to restore. The only time I had to "fix" anything after a version update was when I went from Win 8.1 to the Original Win 10. I had to upgrade my printer drivers. It was a lot easier than when I originally set up the printer on Win 8, with a CD that was made for Win 7. "Classic Shell" updated automatically. Edited February 11, 2018 by Pete! raymac46
It looks as if you can use the Media Creation Tool to update without destroying all the programs. If so that is quite a useful solution. For now, I am going to have him run the Windows Update Troubleshooter and see if that may resolve matters. I am not really anxious to spend hours reinstalling all his programs and possibly losing his emails. Media Creation Tool would be the next step. I will only Reset if he gets to a point where he can't boot at all.
raymac46
My friend ran the Windows Update Troubleshooter and it said it fixed some problems. Now I'll wait and see. If it fails again I'll look into the Media Creation Tool.
raymac46
Got an email that said Windows Update succeeded the other day. Hopefully, it will continue to work.
Guest LilBambi
I would definitely do a backup of his data including .pst file(s) before going further ... just in case. Which I am sure was your first move...
