Receive error message for a web site when opening. Error message reads: Microsoft Internet Explorer, Error in get message{} w/ OK button. After clicking OK button, 'null' is null or not an object comes up with OK button. After clicking OK button, the web site comes up. All other web sites do not have this problemI had my PC worked on, and it was OK before. Is this something to do with my version of Win.98SE or something that the repair blocked? Could be that I need to up grade to Win. XP? I have no problem with other sites.Glenn

Which version of Internet Explorer do you have? It should be v6 SP1 (in IE>Help>About). If it is not then get the latest version for Win98 here:http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...;DisplayLang=enIf you are running 98SE, I doubt your present hardware would effectively run XP. It might, but it would not be a satisfying experience for you. ;) Firefox v2 will run on 98 (v3 will not):http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/syste...rements-v2.htmlIt would be interesting to see if you get the same error with FF as you do with IE. I'm guessing it may be due to the older version of IE you have.

It must be a pretty important site if you are willing to change OS's when it is your only problem. Give the URL for the site and let us see if we have problems with it. Could be the site's problem and not your computer.

There was a problem for IE users yesterday with websites that use 'Sitemeter'. A bug in the Sitemeter software gave a message that IE was unable to access the website. I think it has been fixed by now. Try again.Lena

It's not so important, I just can't figure out why it is happening and didn't before, unless the web site changed something. Here is the web site, Pa.Gov. It is a Pennsylvania web site. No if that's my only problem, I don't want to mess with it. I know win. 98SE is outdated but it still works fine and I don't really like Vista.

When I tried it here.http://www.pa.gov is redirected to http://www.pa.gov/portal/server.pt?That page and others there had quite a bit of javascript. The error message you quoted earlier sounded like it might have something to do with scripting, so I'd try updating java script. Also, that first redirect to http://www.pa.gov/portal/server.pt? has a flash object. Here is the address to an interior page with javascript but no flash.http://www.portal.state.pa.us/portal/serve...2999&mode=2Flash can also run scripts, so if you can access the second page but not the first, try updating Flash.Good luck.

I tried as you said, the second page or interior page comes up without error message. How to update Flash or javascript? My flash is version 9.0124.

Sorry, I was having a brain fart when I wrote 'update java script.'
  • Java script is the scripting language built into Firefox. It only gets updated when you install a newer version of Firefox.
  • Jscript is the scripting language built into Internet Explorer. It only gets updated when you install a newer version of IE.
  • Java Runtime environment is not required by the page in question, but could be updated at http://www.java.com/en/download/index.jsp

Apparently you already have the latest version of Flash - 9.0.124.0.http://www.macromedia.com/software/flash/about/Have you asked the people who repaired your machine if they have trouble accessing the opening page of pa.gov?Maybe it is some obscure security setting?

If I want to access the web page I will use the interior one. No big deal, I really don't use it that much.I was curious why it did what it does. It might be a security thing, with mine. I did ask the people why it does that, but no answer. Daughter can access it OK through Win xp. But I really appreciate the suggustions and help. Thanks.

Maybe problem is with internet explorer, would it be adviseable to reinstall internet explorer over existing one or better to remove the present one from add/remove? I also notice that if I select internet explorer 6.0 in the add/remove it won't high to remove it. Just repair or add componet. It should be able to remove it, if necessary I can go into registry and remove.

You can try 'repair'. Glenn, I had asked you in my first reply what version of IE you have installed. If you do not have the most current version & build of IE, use the download link I supplied and install right over top of your current one.

James, I have IE version 6.0.2800, update SP1. My question was do I have to remove IE from add/remove before downloading new one? When I tried to highlight it just gives me repair or add component, It won't delete or remove it. I have used repair, but problem still exists. Makes me think something is missing from the current IE installation. That's why I was wondering if I had to remove it via registry, before re-installing.

No, you cannot remove a program by editing the registry Glenn. Do you have the latest version of Flash, Java, etc?http://www.macromedia.com/software/flash/about/http://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jspFailing any satisfaction getting IE to work, you may want to consider FireFox as an alternative browser.

Tried both Java and flash update. Both are fine, also downloaded IE complete as you suggusted before. IE works fine with the exception of orginal problem of PA.gov web site. Possible problem is with some security in Win 98SE that is set. Not worth the trouble for one web site.Win.98SE don't really want to re-install, never tried that. As I said, not worth the trouble. Thanks for trying to help with problem.

As you say, not worth the trouble for one site, Glenn. Thanks for trying our suggestions anyway. The feedback is appreciated.
