Hi,
I recently bought a new Mac because my old one was stolen. My old one ran fine and did not have any problems, but the new one is very very slow. Its all the time not just when I first start it and popups come up a lot too.

I think you'll need to provide more information. I assume we are talking about a MacBook of some sort (notebook not all-in-one or desktop.)
- What are machine's specs? (Processor, amount of RAM, hard drive or solid state drive.)
- How long have you had it?
- What browser are you using? Is that where you see the popups?

Thanks for offering to help, raymac46. I referred mkpenczkowski here from another forum where I've helped her with Windows issues.

I don't usually support Macs but I'm willing to try.
I think if you are getting slow performance and popup ads I'd download Malware Bytes for Mac and run a scan. At least then we can rule out malware.

Other than that have a look at the Mac Activity Monitor to see what's using the majority of your RAM and CPU time. Macs don't usually need the sort of cleanups and defrags that Windows machines do. They are more like Linux in that regard. That said there may be some crapware you don't need to run or keep.
If your Mac has modest memory and you routinely run browsers with multiple tabs that can slow things down.
