raymac46 Posted September 22, 2014 Share Posted September 22, 2014 Had another one at 4 AM Saturday when my bilingual smoke detector started talking to me - <BEEP...low battery...pile faible>. I know from bitter experience it won't shut up so I had to get up, go to the basement, retrieve the ladder, disconnect the darn thing. Later that day I got a new 9V battery, installed it and when I reconnected it the detector started howling at about 240 decibels - continuously. After a fast disconnect, I opened up the battery compartment - only to discover I had the battery terminals reversed. Switched them round, tested the unit and blissful silence returned. securitybreach Posted September 23, 2014 Share Posted September 23, 2014 I know it is a bad thing to do but I think I took out the battery in my kitchen's smoke alarm as it is one of the old style square ones that protrude out of the wall and goes off very easily. The thing will tell me when it's ready to go to the trash. My smoke alarm is part of my home security system (insurance discount for having it all tied in) and functions the same way as yours. I keep track of the date and just before five years are up, I call and get the unit replaced. I spent a never-to-be-forgotten night with the D***** thing, which is directly outside my bedroom door, beeping every 30 seconds. Wound up spending the night in a lounge chair in the basement. I do the cleanup/dishes whether I cook or not. I have neighbors who are in their mid-70's. She used to do all the cooking, but then had 2 strokes and also fell twice and broke her leg each time. She now uses a cane and has some trouble with her balance. Her husband started cooking out of necessity, but now seems to be getting into it. He offered me home-made peach pie last time I was visiting and also told of making onion soup from scratch, right through to the correct cheese (for the top??). As someone who would live on salad with various protein additions given the choice, I was properly impressed. I always cleaned up but also have to cook now since my mother is no longer up to it, but I'm really pretty poor at it and unfortunately not very interesting in improvement.
