win7-64-pro projector issue

Just a couple lines of history: my last HD tv lost a critical function, so I decided to replace it. In the store I convinced myself it was a good time to buy a new Sony Bravia 4k tv. I love it, so far, but there's a bit of an issue.

I keep a laptop (HP 8440p) more or less permanently connected to it to access media off the net and personal pics and such. Cabled directly to an hdmi port on the tv. Which worked perfectly with the two previous tv's, but on the new Sony the Win desktop appears too big, by an amount all around of about half the width of the normal taskbar. On an old crt I'd say that it was overscanning.

The tv thinks it's getting a 1920x1080 (standard HD) signal, and that's what the laptop thinks it's delivering. The laptop has some Intel graphics chip that maxes out at 2560x1600 (and so I know that I'm never going to get the full 4k resolution from it.)

Further info, I have booted 3 different linux OS's on it, and they all fit perfectly. Same cable, same laptop, only difference is which OS got booted. To me, that points at win7. Which is updated regularly, I'll add.

Broadcast tv and blu-ray sources display perfectly.

Any ideas how to fix this? Not a fatal problem, but very annoying.

Mods, if you think this should be in Hardware then please move it, thanks.

The first thing I'd try is setting the laptop to different resolutions and see what happens at each. Laptop video chips tend to play tricks at different resolutions. I'm assuming that you have updated the laptop with the latest video driver. Edited by lewmur

Hello,

Have you looked to see if a device driver (technically, a monitor profile information file, but most manufacturers file them under device drivers) is available for the SONY Bravia 4K monitor on SONY's support web site?

Just to update, I sorta kinda have a fix for the problem; maybe better described as a workaround.

It turns out that the laptop's Intel graphics hardware has a driver [?] module with an interface that allows you to construct a new set of parameters presumably to work with any screen. Also has a field where you can "scale the aspect ratio" of the screen; when set to 75% both vert and horiz, then the win7 desktop fits just about right.

Once I knew what terms to search on I found that many other people have seen the same problem, and not just with Sony or HP hardware. It appears that the root of it is that the tv properly reports to win7 that it is a =tv= and not just a monitor, and thus gets slightly different timing signals [blanking? sync?].

Whatever, it's much more comfortable to use win7 now that I can see all of the taskbar.
