raymac46
My neighbor picked up a small form factor desktop (HP) yesterday. It's hard to tell the hardware difference between these small desktops and a laptop. The one my neighbor got has an AMD Carrizo-L APU which handles CPU, GPU and Northbridge tasks. This is the same SOC that's in my daughter's HP laptop. The power supply is an external brick just like a laptop. The desktop has wifi as well. All it lacks is the monitor/laptop screen. It has 8 GB of RAM and a 1 TB hard drive so it should run OK. I think we'll see a lot more of this convergence in small desktops that will never be used for gaming.
securitybreach
Well that form factor has been used for years in the corporate environment. For instance, in the last few months at work, we have probably replaced a few hundred HP Elite 8300 Ultra-slim desktops with laptops. The machines are still nice (i7s with 8gb of ram) but they are out of warranty and my company is replacing them all with laptops and docking stations instead of using that form factor. I do not know if HP is getting rid of the line or if Shell is just moving everyone to laptops.
ebrke
I do not know if HP is getting rid of the line or if Shell is just moving everyone to laptops. The large medical device corp where I was contracting until a few years ago had gone almost exclusively to laptops/docking stations. Big advantage there was everyone took them home, where they continued to work off the clock. Hard to do that with a desktop, although I guess it would be possible with those small form factor ones.
raymac46
I have seen those Elite SFF desktops for sale at a company nearby that specializes in reconditioned off-lease units. They are more of a classic desktop design with an actual internal power supply. The only problem is that they are too small to be able to put a proper video card in them. https://www.tte.ca/hp-elite-8200-sff-225096-3 This would be a better unit for upgrades although you'd probably need a new power supply to put in a video card with any punch. https://www.tte.ca/desktops/refurbished-desktops/dell-optiplex-790-219019-3 I've been retired a long while - when I left Unilever I still had an old school desktop PC - two in fact as I worked in two different locales. Now I think they all have laptops and virtual desktop setups so they can access their files in any office from a central server. I never missed taking my work home with me though.
