Are the packages capable of working under your older OS?

That was part of the problem thanks ross

The other thing is the installer itself it only shows the first screen and then freezes

You have to download dmg files that will work on your particular flavor os OS X Panther, aka 10.3.x. Most things will not work on Panther these days. So you really need to look carefully at the hardware and OS requirements before even downloading programs.

Also you will want to get the updates at are actually still available from Apple, if you don't have them. You will stand a much better chance of getting some software installed if you have the latest updates from Apple installed:

Archived - Mac OS X 10.3: Chart of available Mac OS software updates

Some software in the following list for Panther (10.3.x):

Software for Vintage and Obsolete Computers

Would definitely want to to get the 10.3.x version of TinkerTool.

great free apps for mac os x 10.3.9
