Can you export your mail?

Hi Everyone.I've been trying both Mozilla and Firebird, and have decided to go with this product in the future for both my main web browser and email. I have 1.4 RC2 installed now, and want to install the lastest 1.4. Question is: When I uninstall RC2, will I lose my email messages? or are they stored in a folder that doesn't get deleted on uninstall? I looked for an Export function for this, and didn't see it.Also, in the future, when Mozilla and Firebird get merged, will the old message folders be able to be used? Will Mozilla be merged with Firebird, or Firebird merged with Mozilla. Will all old messages and such be usable in the final product? I don't want to invest a lot of time tweaking my browser/mail clients just to start from scratch when the merge happens.I know these anwsers are probably at Mozilla.org, but I just don't have the time to spend there researching?I have recently done a clean install of Win2k, and do not plan on using IE or Outlook anymore. When I finally have time to go fully Linux (hopefully before 2004 :D ) I plan on using whatever version of Mozilla/Firebird is out there.....TIA

mozilla stores email in DOCUMENTS&SETTINGS/ your username /Application Data/Mozilla/Profiles/defaultthere is a random character number, such as "auo39p1o.slt". a new one gets created for each account. the folder also has a bookmarks.html file which as naturally all your bookmarks, abook.mab which stores contacts, cookies and cookperm.txt which handles all cookies and cookie blocking, and all your settings in prefs.js. I believe the training.dat file is your junk mail control file that learns what is junk and what is not. all emails are stored in the MAIL subfolder. So basically, backup the entire folder and all subfolder EXCEPT the Cache folder.for Mozilla, similar path, but replace Mozilla with either Phoenix or Firebird. not sure which name they use. as for netscape, the ironic thing is it also uses the MOZILLA folder, not a netscape folder, so you dont have to move anything.as for your question, doing a full uninstall of Netscape and full install of mozilla should automically set up your correct folder, but if it doesnt, say it makes a new profile name, you can manually move the files into the new profile. but do a backup first. uninstalling either netscape or mozilla does not touch your settings, bookmarks or emails, but better safe than sorry.you can even transfer those files you backed up into your linux (linux mozilla uses a different path, one i forget right now).and dont worry, firebird and thunderbird will become mozilla eventually, so i'm sure there will be a direct import, and they're no changing the database structure much.

When you uninstall Mozilla, it does NOT delete your profile, so you should have no trouble uninstalling and installing the new version... Definintely back it up just in case though...Firebird profile is located at: DOCUMENTS&SETTINGS/ your username /Application Data/phoenix/Profiles/defaultWhen it becomes merged with Mozilla, it will move the profile to the current Mozilla profile location, so there shouldn't be any problems changing over. :D

I made you a quick screen capture of where Mozilla, Firebird and Thunderbird all keep their settings. Since the structure is nearly identical, i see no problem in future of merging your Mozilla settings ito Firebird/Thunderbird.p.s. - don't laugh at my graphics skills. its just 8am over here. :D directories.JPG

Yup, you're absolutely right.Just uninstalled, restarted, installed, and wahla, it was all still there, posts, addressbook and everything. . :D Gotta like it. Didn't have to do anything special, er, anything at all!! Looks like M$ has something to learn (steal) from these folks. I now have to go through import/export **** to get my outlook contacts out of my archive/backups from before my reinstall :D What's thier estimate on when Moz and Firebird are going to be merged. I'm excited about this milestone. !!

a while ago i heard Mozilla 1.5, now its more likely 1.6, or even later.it all depends on how quickly and well the Firebird/Thunderbird developement goes.if i were to guess, i'd say by september/october. some folks even want to call it Mozilla 2.0 when its finally merged. but Mozilla 1.4 is to be latest stable build. i'm, not too sure what will be in mozilla 1.5 if its not merged. maybe just a couple new tweaks/features? they're shifting most of their development to Firebird/Thunderbird right now.

When Moz and Firebird merge, is the email client going to be built in like it is now or seperate? has anyone heard anything on this?

Nothing official has been announced yet. The belief is that it will be a separate program, but will still have the functionality of a built-in... They want to keep Tbird standalone, but they know they have to integrate it similarly to MozMail now.
