Interesting article about this at the WSJ:http://online.wsj.com/public/article/SB112....html?mod=blogs

By night, Bob Coons is a jazz guitarist, playing at clubs in San Francisco. By day, he clocks in at an office, where he sits in front of a computer screen alongside other local musicians, listening to artists like Metallica and Barbra Streisand through a pair of bulky headphones and filling out a computerized scorecard detailing the musical nuances of each song.Mr. Coons, 45 years old, is contributing to what Oakland, Calif.-based Pandora Media Inc. calls the Music Genome Project -- an ambitious effort to create DNA-like blueprints for songs and then use them to make music recommendations based not on opinion, but on science. The company believes its music recommendations are so accurate that users will pay $36 a year for them.
It has also been /dotted a couple times as well:http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=05/11/29/151229&from=rsshttp://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=05/10/0...tid=141&tid=187Here's more info on the Project:
The Music Genome ProjectOn January 6, 2000 a group of musicians and music-loving technologists came together with the idea of creating the most comprehensive analysis of music ever.Together we set out to capture the essence of music at the most fundamental level. We ended up assembling literally hundreds of musical attributes or "genes" into a very large Music Genome. Taken together these genes capture the unique and magical musical identity of a song - everything from melody, harmony and rhythm, to instrumentation, orchestration, arrangement, lyrics, and of course the rich world of singing and vocal harmony. It's not about what a band looks like, or what genre they supposedly belong to, or about who buys their records - it's about what each individual song sounds like.Over the past 5 years, we've carefully listened to the songs of over 10,000 different artists - ranging from popular to obscure - and analyzed the musical qualities of each song one attribute at a time. This work continues each and every day as we endeavor to include all the great new stuff coming out of studios, clubs and garages around the world. It has been quite an adventure, you could say a little crazy - but now that we've created this extraordinary collection of music analysis, we think we can help be your guide as you explore your favorite parts of the music universe. We hope you enjoy the journey.Tim WestergrenFounderThe Music Genome Project
http://www.pandora.com/mgp.shtmlIt is a pay to play project:
How much does it cost?Pandora is available in two forms. Both versions have exactly the same features. The first form is an advertising-supported version which is entirely free. Over time we'll be incorporating ads into this version of Pandora. For those who want to steer clear of advertising, subscriptions are available in two different flavors: ANNUAL: 12 months of unlimited use for $36 QUARTERLY: 3 months of unlimited use for $12
Interesting concept but it's good to know from the get go that it's not a free service. And be sure to read the full Privacy policy:http://www.pandora.com/legal.shtml#privacy

WinAuditWinAuditSmall.gifThis program allows you to perform a detailed audit of the hardware and software configuration of your computer. The resulting audit report contains details on installed software, license information, peripherals, memory usage, processor model, network settings, startup programs and more. It can be viewed from within the application, or optionally exported to text, nicely formatted web page, XML and spreadsheet formats, or sent by email. WinAudit also supports ODBC connections and can export audit data to an existing database. Very small, standalone program that works well.Download it from here:http://www.snapfiles.com/dlnow/dlnow.dll?Inc=No&ID=107817 The program is also available at:http://mysharedfiles.no-ip.org/ Enjoy

More like blogs than Web pages, but it still might be useful to those who don't yet have a Web presence. It certainly is an easy way to get yourself on the Internet.

They are also either being hit hard or they are still working out the kinks too with this new beta project:Capture_02262006_204253_sm.jpgBut as we have all seen, that's not unusual for new services.

Very cool......... THANKS B)
Agreed, killer-quality cool. OK, here's a starting seed I'm enjoying at the moment; start it with Manhattan Transfer, then The Nylons -- and kill Prince when that comes up. Doing Bobby McFerrin right now. Thanks for the hit! .

You are very welcome Bob! Some additional information on Autostreamer is available and some caveats on it's use here at NeoWin which has a thread that would be very helpful for anyone who is interested in trying it out:http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=223562And according to that thread, alternate download locations for the executable also include:http://www.megaupload.com/?d=3JVTEQX3BTW: NeoWin itself is also hosting the file:http://neowin.hurmoth.com/apps/AutoStreamer.exeThere is also a Zipfile that is available noted on page one of that thread as well:http://mhtools.knoware.nl/raptor/autostrea...utoStreamer.zip (549KB)

The unattended setup is brilliant, especially if you reinstall regularly, like me (usually break something after a few months) :) Oh, and it's free! :hysterical:

EULAlyzer - http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/eulalyzer.html eulalyzer0ao.gifNo one puts End User License Agreements at the top of their reading list. Failing to read these, though, can results in privacy risks, unwanted software, and other nasty surprises. You should always read EULAs from end to end, but EULAlyzer makes it easier to home in on the important parts. To start, click the plus-sign button in EULAlyzer and drag it to the text requiring analysis. You'll see the text appear in the program's window. When you click "analyze," EULAlyzer searches the document for what it calls "words of interest" (reminiscent of a "person of interest" in a police investigation). EULAlyzer than assigns its Interest Rating to the program. You can then search the entire EULA for keywords--"trial," for instance--and pull up further data on the product. Of course, EULAlyzer is no substitute for reading the EULA. Whenever you want to install software, you should read the EULA first, period. But EULAlyzer does save you time and effort. You can also save EULAs in EULAlyzer, so you can check back later if you think a program's not treating your PC (or your privacy) as kindly as it promised it would. Download EULAlyzer - http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/eulalyzerdl.html Enjoy
