Bruno has posted updates available about 3 days in a row, yet when i go to the MCC to get those updates it tells me "none" That i must have all the recent ones or somthing to that effect. Up until about 3 days ago it would update, am i missing somthing or are they not for the Free edition? B)

No worries Dense . . . those might have been packages needed for the "extras" I installed on my main system.( One thing you can check is: are you sure you did set the box from "Security Updates" to "All Updates" );) BrunoPS: Did you get most updates from Nov 10 ? If so you are okay.

I'm using 2007 powerpack 64 bit and have the same trouble. When I try to add software there is usually an error message advising that signatures are not ok and that files cannot be read. The system can't find some of the programs I want to load, and new programs have to be manually put into the menu when sucessefully loaded. I'm desparate to get the system working properly - can someone guide me through the process? Edited by Grogerf

Hi GrogerfWelcome to the forum, I hope we can help you.I think the first thing you could do is fix the bug in rpmdrake manually, open a terminal and give this command as root:

# urpmi ftp://ftp.nluug.nl/pub/os/Linux/distr/Mandrakelinux/official/2007.0/x86_64/media/main/updates/rpmdrake-3.19-1.1mdv2007.0.x86_64.rpm

( Command is ONE line ! )After that try to ge the updates again. ( there are up[dates for "rpm" that are important to solve your problems as well )If after the above you still have problems with the updates I would like to know what mirror you are using for the updates.B) Bruno

Hello Bruno,Thanks for your advice. It seems that my system is in need of more attention, I was able to add some software but there were no bug fixes and I don't recall seeing any updates to rpm. Several updates had problems - unable to read file etc. I was unable to update Firefox amongst others.Anotherproblem is I never seem to be asked to put the DVD into the drive - even though I know the software is on it. All sources were removed following some advice I was given elsewhere - I tried to add it manually, but it doesn't seem to work as a source any more. Here are the mirrors - seems there are far too many PLF Free ftp://ftp.planetmirror.com/pub/plf/mandri...e/binary/x86_64PLF Free backportsftp://ftp.planetmirror.com/pub/plf/mandri...s/binary/x86_64PLf non freeftp://ftp.planetmirror.com/pub/plf/mandri...e/binary/x86_64PLF non free back portsftp://ftp.planetmirror.com/pub/plf/mandri...s/binary/x86_64Mainftp://mirror.pacific.net.au/MandrivaLinux...ia/main/releaseMain backportsftp://mirror.pacific.net.au/MandrivaLinux/official/2007.0/x86_64/media/main/backportsContribftp://mirror.pacific.net.au/MandrivaLinux...contrib/releaseContrib updateshttp://ftp.riken.jp/Linux/mandrake/officia...contrib/updatesContrib backportsftp://mirror.pacific.net.au/MandrivaLinux...ntrib/backportsMain(Oficial2007-0.1)ftp://ftp.nara.wide.ad.jp/pub/Linux/Mandr...ia/main/releaseContrib(Official2007-0.2)ftp://ftp.nara.wide.ad.jp/pub/Linux/Mandr...contrib/releaseUpdate source(Official2007-0.3)ftp://ftp.nara.wide.ad.jp/pub/Linux/Mandr...//2007.0/x86_64Contrib(Official2007-0.4)http://ftp.riken.go.jp/Linux/mandrake/offi...contrib/releaseContrib updates(official2007-0.5)http://ftp.riken.go.jp/Linux/mandrake/offi...contrib/updatesMain(Official2007-0.6)ftp://ftp.nara.wide.ad.jp/pub/Linux/Mandr...ia/main/releaseContrib(Official2007-0.7)ftp://ftp.nara.wide.ad.jp/pub/Linux/Mandr...contrib/releaseContrib updates(Official2007-0.8)ftp://ftp.nara.wide.ad.jp/pub/Linux/Mandr...contrib/updatesMain(Official2007-0.3)http://ftp.riken.go.jp/Linux/mandrake/offi...ia/main/release

Hi GrogerfYou have way to many sources active there . . . . and you have an update source that is not up to date.I would remove ALL those sources using the MCC . . . then close the MCC and open it again and follow the routine described here: http://forums.scotsnewsletter.com/index.php?showtopic=16612 And yes please choose the mirror I advise in that thread. After you have the "Main", the "Contrib" and the "Update_source" you should look for updates again . . . . most likely this time it will be better.Keep us posted.;) Bruno

Hallo Bruno,Much better! I was a bit doubtful when I tried looking for updates and got a message that it was impossible to retrieve the list of new packages - this happened twice, then on the third try it worked!Since then I have been downloading updates at variable speeds - but all much better than before. The update mirrors are now as follows:-Main (Official2007-0.1)http://ftp.nluug.nl/ftp/pub/os/Linux/distr...ia/main/releaseThis one not selected - no boxes checked - Main Updates(Official2007-0.2)http://ftp.nluug.nl/ftp/pub/os/Linux/distr...ia/main/updatesContrib (Official2007-0.3)http://ftp.nluug.nl/ftp/pub/os/Linux/distr...contrib/releaseContrib Updates (Official2007-0.4)http://ftp.nluug.nl/ftp/pub/os/Linux/distr...contrib/updatesupdate_sourceftp://ftp.nluug.nl/pub/os/Linux/distr/Man...ia/main/updatesHow do I add the DVD and the other sources (plf etc)?Le Professeur Pingouin deserves a whole crate of fresh herring! (Can't get them here in Oz!)Looking forward to the next installment! ;)

Hi GrogerCongrats !! Glad it worked :w00t: Now a word about the check-boxes at the sources:- Main and contrib should only have the "enabled" box checked- Update_source should have both boxes checked Because you have the Main and Contrib source enabled you do not need the DVD anymore . . . it holds the same software as the DVD.The other sources like PLF and the club sources: you can add them but only enable them if you want to add software that can not be found in Main and Contrib. Then as soon as you are ready with installing the packages you remove the "enable" check from the box, this is to avoid future conficts when doing updates. You can find a series of extra sources HereB) Bruno

Hallo Bruno,It all worked - thank you :hmm: .A couple of questions:-Contrib Updates(Official2007.0-4) also has both boxes checked - is this correct?I notice that many of the sources are "i586" - is this correct for 64 bit system (I believe it is correct as system can also run 32 bit programs, but not sure)?Do you suggest enabling the additional sources in the order they appear?Looking forward to your response.

Hi Groger . . . . enabling just the "enbale" one will do :hysterical:

OOoooo sorry I was thinking you were running "i586" . . . . . In your case it is more complicated because you additionally need - only for Fiorefox and browserplugins - the "i586" Contrib and Main, but have them disabled most of the time ( only enabled for FF and the plugins )BUT for all the other sources you need the 64bis version . . . . so forget about the ones I linked you to above . . . . here are the 64bits I could find ( supposing you have the correct x86_64 Main and Contrib already ):Backports:

Hallo again :) ,I've removed the i586 additional sources and added the 64 bit sources you gave above. so far so good! Now for a couple of questions:-How do I add the i586 Contrib & Main without causing conflict with the existing 64 bit Contrib & Main? Is it as simple as copying the code and letting it go?Are the sources you posted for PLF Basckports and SeerOfSouls at http://forums.scotsnewsletter.com/index.ph...mp;#entry213094 still valid? If so should I also add them (subject to your warnings)?Seems as if we're nealy there already! - Looking forward to your reply.

Hi GrogerYep you can just add the 32bits Main and Corntrib sources as long as you make sure they are not "active" ( well, only when installing the 32 bits browser and plugins ) . . . . . :Main:

# urpmi.addmedia --wget "2007_main.release" ftp://ftp.nluug.nl/pub/os/Linux/distr/Mandrakelinux/official/2007.0/i586/media/main/release/ with ./media_info/hdlist.cz

Contrib:

# urpmi.addmedia --wget "2007_contrib.release" ftp://ftp.nluug.nl/pub/os/Linux/distr/Mandrakelinux/official/2007.0/i586/media/contrib/release/ with ./media_info/hdlist.cz

And for your second question: I did not add the backports of PLF and the SOS sources because they are the most dangerous of all ( for making a mess of your install ) and you can do really fine without them.:( Bruno

Hallo again Bruno :D Added those two and all went well - after a failed download to start with.Next question, - now that I've totally updated the sources and received a load of updates, what do I do to fix up FireFox. I haven't tried after receiving the recent updates, but I couldn't get the plug ins previously. FireFox tells me it is Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.8.0.9) Gecko/20061220 Mandriva/1.5.0.9-1mdv2007.0 (2007.0) Firefox/1.5.0.9. I guess that I have to remove the 64 bit version & intstall the 32 bit version.Looking forward to your advice again!

Yep Groger . . . you will indeed have to remove the 64bits Firefox and install the 32bits FF + 32bits plugins. ( just don't forget to disable the 32bits sources - Main and Contrib - and enable the 64bits again once you are done  ):D Bruno

My billing sequence is from the 21st day  :"> I built up more downloads with all the recent changes, updates and so on than I bargained for when I signed up. Those are tricky questions . . . . :)The version I have is:
Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.8.0.9) Gecko/20061220 Mandriva/1.5.0.9-1mdv2007.0 (2007.0) Firefox/1.5.0.9
. . . And maybe the best way to get it is:1). First add ( temporary ) the 32bits update source:
# urpmi.addmedia --wget "Updates 32BITS" ftp://ftp.nluug.nl/pub/os/Linux/distr/Mandrakelinux/official/updates/2007.0/i586/media/main/updates with ./media_info/hdlist.cz

2). Install the Firefox-1.5.0.9 update manually using urpmi in order to resolve dependencies:

# urpmi --wget ftp://ftp.nluug.nl/pub/os/Linux/distr/Mandrakelinux/official/updates/2007.0/i586/media/main/updates/mozilla-firefox-1.5.0.9-1mdv2007.0.i586.rpm

3). Disable the "Updates 32BITS" source and watch This Thread to monitor if there are new versions posted.4). Check if the browserplugins are working properly . . . . . ( knowing that the use of any plugin will pull more MBs of your monthly download limit :"> ) Bruno

Yep according of what I see you installed you have the 32bit version . . and help --> about does show:
Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linuxi686 (x86_64); en-US; rv:1.8.0.9) Gecko/20061220 Mandriva/1.5.0.9-1mdv2007.0 (2007.0) Firefox/1.5.0.9'
This says the i686 version (=32bit) is running on a x86_64 system.
How do I check the plugins are working? - I went to a site with the "green jigsaw" saying install plugin and Firefox went looking before coming back with the error message.
You will have to install the plugins . . . let's first see what you have at present, please show the result of:
# ls /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/

This will show what is already installed and what we still have to install. You could start installing Flash version 9 . . . have a look Here how to do this. Bruno

Hallo Bruno :sweatingbullets: ,It worked - thanks for the education about the 'Help about' response (I need it).Dial up isn't so bad when you only have to download a couple of megs! I queried the system as you said and it didn't show the Flashplayer, but did show the two other files. I downloaded the tarball and followed the instructions in the link. The terminal responseswere:-install_flash_player_9_linux/install_flash_player_9_linux/Readme.txtinstall_flash_player_9_linux/flashplayer-installerinstall_flash_player_9_linux/libflashplayer.soinstall_flash_player_9_linux/flashplayer.xpt[roger@localhost ~]$ suPassword:[root@localhost roger]# cd install_flash_player_9_linux[root@localhost install_flash_player_9_linux]# cp flashplayer.xpt /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/cp: overwrite `/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/flashplayer.xpt'? y[root@localhost install_flash_player_9_linux]# cp libflashplayer.so /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/cp: overwrite `/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so'? y[root@localhost install_flash_player_9_linux]# ls -al /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/total 11587drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 224 Jan 26 11:04 ./drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 72 Nov 18 00:52 ../-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 856 Jan 27 21:10 flashplayer.xpt-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 7040080 Jan 27 21:11 libflashplayer.so*-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 47596 May 30 2006 libgnashplugin.so*lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 70 Nov 18 00:52 libjavaplugin_oji.so -> ../../../../usr/lib/jre-1.4.2/plugin/i386/mozilla/libjavaplugin_oji.soI then did the query again and the response this time was:-[roger@localhost ~]$ ls /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/flashplayer.xpt libgnashplugin.so* nppdf.so*libflashplayer.so* libjavaplugin_oji.so@[roger@localhost ~]$It's looking good :sweatingbullets: What's next to install for plugins?Looking forward to your next!Grogerf

Great Groger . . . . we are making progress !! ;)Now we have the most essential ones installed: You already had the java-plugin and now you also have the flash-plugin.There are a few more you might want:From the "Contrib"( 32bits ) source: mplayerplugingxinegxine-mozilla From PLF: real-codecsfaad2win32-codecsxine-win32xine-faad ( faad is for mp4 ;) )And, just as a reminder: Don't forget to disable all the extra sources you enabled to get these extra packages. :) B) Bruno

Hallo again Bruno :) Some good news - having disabled all the sources except the 32 bit 'Contrib' source, the mplayer plugin was installed without difficulty. When I tired to do the same for gxine and gxine-mozilla I got the error messages:-Sorry, the following package(s) can't be selected:gxine-0.5.7-1mdv2007.0.i586 (due to unsatisfied libxine.so.1)Sorry, the following package(s) can't be selected:gxine-mozilla-0.5.7-1mdv2007.0.i586 (due to unsatisfied gxine[== 0.5.7])Then I disabled the 32 bit 'Contrib' and eanabled the 'PLF free' sourceThere no search results for real-codecs, win32-codecs, or xine-win32 - should I also go to PLF non-free?With xine-faad I got the following messagesTo satisfy dependencies, the following 1 packages are going to be installed:faad2-2.5-1plf2007.0.x86_64faad2-xmms-2.5-1plf2007.0.x86_64 (due to unsatisfied libxmms.so.1()(64bit))To satisfy dependencies, the following 1 packages are going to be installed:xine-faad-1.1.2-4plf2007.0.x86_64This looked to me as if 64 bit packages were being installed!I then opened a terminal to check the plugins present and this was the result :-[roger@localhost ~]$ ls /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/flashplayer.xpt mplayerplug-in-gmp.xpt* mplayerplug-in.so*libflashplayer.so* mplayerplug-in-qt.so* mplayerplug-in-wmp.so*libgnashplugin.so* mplayerplug-in-qt.xpt* mplayerplug-in-wmp.xptlibjavaplugin_oji.so@ mplayerplug-in-rm.so* mplayerplug-in.xptmplayerplug-in-gmp.so* mplayerplug-in-rm.xpt* nppdf.so*[roger@localhost ~]$Two questions again! I removed ALL the 32 bit sources and installed the 64 bit replacements - adding only the 32 bit main, contrib & update sources. Due I have to install & enable 32 bit PLF free & non-free sources but only for Firefox plugins? In the terminal (Konsole) the responses are all on a black background, but there are three colurs - white, blue & green - what do the colours mean?Looking forward to the next stage in my education! Grogerf

Yep, Groger you are correct . . . forgot to mention that most likely you needed the 32 bits PLF sources for the plugins/codecs . . . . Maybe you should, just for these series of packages activate the 32bits Main + Contrib + PLF-free + PLF-nonfree.About the colors: The command "ls" in a terminal will show the directories in a dark-blue color, images in pink-purple, scripts and executables in green and links in a light-blue color. ( all this to make your Linux experience easier ;) ) Bruno

Hallo again!Thank you again for your response - I must be learning something! It's good to know what the colours mean - do these colours have the same meaning in other terminal programs?A couple of questions before I get going! Is there a way that I can have the 32 bit sources clearly identified as 32 bit in the MCC? This would probably save a future mistake!Should I remove the 64 bit programs that were added in the last step?Looking forward to the next step! Grogerf

1).

Well the colors are related to the "ls" command and is ( often ) set in the .bashrc - config file for bash - with alias ls='ls -F --color=auto'2).
Is there a way that I can have the 32 bit sources clearly identified as 32 bit in the MCC? This would probably save a future mistake!
Okay Groger, I will show you how to do it. Look in this thread and you will find the 32 bits sources. The PLF sources posted there look like:PLF-Free: ( Needs the Contrib source )
# urpmi.addmedia --wget "plf-free" ftp://ftp.free.fr/pub/Distributions_Linux/plf/mandrake/2007.0/free/release/binary/i586 with hdlist.cz

PLF-NonFree:

# urpmi.addmedia --wget "plf-nonfree" ftp://ftp.free.fr/pub/Distributions_Linux/plf/mandrake/2007.0/non-free/release/binary/i586 with hdlist.cz

Now if you want to make clear in the sources manager in the MCC that they are the 32bits you change them to:PLF-Free: ( Needs the Contrib source )

# urpmi.addmedia --wget "32BITS-plf-free" ftp://ftp.free.fr/pub/Distributions_Linux/plf/mandrake/2007.0/free/release/binary/i586 with hdlist.cz

PLF-NonFree:

# urpmi.addmedia --wget "32BITS-plf-nonfree" ftp://ftp.free.fr/pub/Distributions_Linux/plf/mandrake/2007.0/non-free/release/binary/i586 with hdlist.cz

This way they will show as "32BITS-plf-free" and "32BITS-plf-nonfree"Simple . . . isn't it ?? :thumbsup:3).

Should I remove the 64 bit programs that were added in the last step?
From what I can see these are only the "faad" and "faad2" . . . . They are codecs for the mediaplayers like mplayer and xine, so they will not bother the browserplugins. I would leave them as they are since your xine ( or xine based like totem / caffeine ) will also be 64bits.;) Bruno

Hallo again B) ,That was ALL achieved in 13 M of downloadings - (the MCC said much more - about 22M for the win32 codecs) - so I'm still in with the broad band for a bit longer yet! Thank you for your continued help and advice ;) MCC reported no search results for xine-win32. (again)ls /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/ now reports :-flashplayer.xpt mplayerplug-in-gmp.xpt* mplayerplug-in.so*libflashplayer.so* mplayerplug-in-qt.so* mplayerplug-in-wmp.so*libgnashplugin.so* mplayerplug-in-qt.xpt* mplayerplug-in-wmp.xptlibjavaplugin_oji.so@ mplayerplug-in-rm.so* mplayerplug-in.xptmplayerplug-in-gmp.so* mplayerplug-in-rm.xpt* nppdf.so*I still get the error messages for gxine when I try to install it from the MCC"Sorry, the following package(s) can't be selected:gxine-0.5.7-1mdv2007.0.i586 (due to unsatisfied libxine.so.1)Sorry, the following package(s) can't be selected:gxine-mozilla-0.5.7-1mdv2007.0.i586 (due to missing gxine-0.5.7-1mdv2007.0.i586)"- and I can't seem to find libxine.so.1 on any of the sources! When I return to the normal sources (64 bit) I get this message"To satisfy dependencies, the following package(s) also needto be installed:lib64mozilla-firefox1.5.0.9-1.5.0.9-1mdv2007.0"As usual :) , a few questions as a result of the process! Can I edit the 2007_main.release and 2007_contrib.release in MCC to show 32 bit in their name?Should I allow the installation of lib64mozilla-firefox1.5.0.9-1.5.0.9-1mdv2007.0?I suspect that my version of Faad is 64 bit - does this matter and how can I check?I couldn't find xine-win32 at all - what will be the result of it being absent? (How do I check which version of xine is on my system (can't find it in Help, but it does say xine ui version 0.99.4)Looking forward to your continued advice.Grogerf
