Shamgar Wants to Try Suse

Shamgar

Recommended Posts

A walk through, please. I would like to put Mandrake 9.2 PP on my second hard drive (15 gig - 13.4 gig actual) with Suse 9.1 on my non-internet computer. I am planning on doing a fresh install. Bruno, I have looked at your deluxe partioning recommendations. Do these partions have to go in any special order for: / , /usr, /boot, /var, etc? Will the /usr, /var, /boot, /backup be a ext 3, also? 281sa.gif

Hi ShamgarThese partitionrecommendations were written in a time where people had one Linux distro + Windows on their computer . . . and would still be a good idea if it concerns your main ( work ) distro. But with all the multiboots going on my advice is to keep it as simple as possible . . and that is 2 partitions, a / and a /home . . . . . in the case of the PP and 13 G I would 5 to 7 for / and the rest for /home . . . . ( 5 for / is minimum for the PP ):sweatingbullets: Bruno

Thanks for the reply. I had my brother's help for these partitions which are currently on the machine:1 gig swap7.1 gig / at ext35.2 gig /home at ext 3.Do I want to leave these partitions or decrease the swap to 500 mb as in your recommendations?signquestion3xd.gif

Just leave the swap as it is Shamgar . . . those 500 MB you can gain are peanuts and not worth messing up the partition table :D ( And if that system has little RAM the 1 gig swap could even be usefull  )B) Bruno

Thanks. Is 256 MB big enough for a AMD Anthon XP 1600+ 1.4 GHz machine? Personally, I think it sails. When I get Mandrake on I'll let you know. I have to finish burning something yet.1074.gif

256 RAM is sufficient for running 9.2 . . . . mind you 512 would be luxury ( so if sooner or later you can get an extra stick for your birthday  ), but 256 does real fine :DB) Bruno

Well it didn't like the first install . . . I think I cut out too many packages (~1750 MB ). So I was more generous with the install this time (~2200MB). It is still loading (I call it the Horses are running) disk 2. BTW I noticed it didn't ask for the commercial disks. How do I know what is on just the commerical disk? Is there a listing in MCC?animal17.gif

It only uses the first 3 for the install if you do not add additional packages . . . . . but later in the MCC you will see all the CDs listed and when you search for software it will ask you for the right CD to install that software ;)But after the install first do the updateCD ;):happyroll: Bruno

Okay, I just did a second install and the same thing happen after the first install. . . It hangs after you hit "reboot" after the installation. You get to the screen that says "rebooting press ESC for verboose mode" and it sits there with the sliding scale about 1/3 of he away across.Mandrake 9.2 PP you are very naughty!188.gif1018.gifneutral.gif

Just hit Ctrl+Alt+Del . . . or the reset-bottun . . . I hope you did choose Ext3 as format for the filesystem . . . . do NOT press Y when it asks you during boot . . . just let it recover from the journal ;):happyroll: Bruno

I never touched the partitions. They were Ext3 on the previous partition with SUse 9.1. The only thing I did was format / and /home. I hit CNTRL ,ALT, DEL a few times and the same hang up occurs. I even tried shutting off the computer and restarting it and nothing has changed. . . it still hangs. I am able to go into windows and that is where I am right now. P.S. Is there a problem with me using my Mandrake 9.2 personal disks and installing the packages from the commecial apps disks?Shamgar has present for you Mandrakeuglypanzer.gif computer_p2.gif

Nope, this is very well possible . . and even a good option !Just install the "download-edition" . . after that do:
# urpmi.removemedia -a

To remove all CD sourcesThen put CD1 of the PP in the CD drive and:

# urpmi.addmedia --distrib cd- removable://mnt/cdrom/

This will add all the CDs of the PP to your sources and all will be as if you installed from PP ;):happyroll: Bruno

Thanks. Okay this is what happened. So this means all the cds are now listed in the MCC so I can install whatever I chose? Okay I went into Software Media Manager and this are the disks that are checked:X Installation CD1 (cd1)X Installation CD 2 (cd2)X International CD (cd3)X International CD (cd4)X Commercial Apps CD (cd5)X Commercial Apps CD (cd6)X Contrib CD (cd7)X Source CD1 (cd8)There is no record of the second source CD. My question do you want me to uncheck each of these and then add the Update cd to the media manager? After that then I run the update? After I run the update cd do I remove the UPdate CD from the SWM and recheck these (1-8) again or not?confused.gificon_confused.gif

Hi ShamNo you do not have to un-check the CDs in the Media Manager . . .

Open the MCC --> Software --> Media Manager and uncheck the normal update source and ALL other sources EXCEPT the CDs
( but since this is a fresh install you will probably not have added other sources yet  ) Bruno

Thanks Bruno:I will add the update cd and run it then according to the ternimals window commands you gave. Do you want me to add the second source cd also since it did not appear on the list .. . not that I would probably ever use it.209069.gif209069.gif209069.gif209069.gif37.gif37.gif

No need to add the second source CD . . . . You will never ever use it ( not the first one, actually ) . . . . . later PPs don't even have the source CDs anymore . . . . because only Mandrake programmers themselves use it ;);) Bruno

Hi ShamI hope we are still on time to make a Mandrake boot CD or floppy before you start installing SUSE . . . . . because there is a big chance you will overwrite the MBR ;)Anyway one additional tip: when installing SUSE and you come to the question of the bootloader Grub or Lilo . . . . you can ( and I prefer ) opt for Lilo ( is not the default :) ) . . . and install it in the / ( root ) partition ( Not in the MBR ) . . . . because adding it to Drake's Lilo will then be childsplay :DB) Bruno

I haven't touched anything. o:) I will make the boot cd, first. As for Lilo, I have no problem with Lilo. I'll go to the tips on the boot cd to see what I need to do.Arrh Suse . . . . get ready to be boarded! :)

If you use the default kernel for 9.2 this is the code:

# mkrescue --iso --initrd /boot/initrd-2.4.22-10mdk.img --kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.4.22-10mdk

( Code is ONE line )It will put a file called "rescue.iso" in your /home/shamgar . . . . . . .just rightclick it, choose "actions" --> "Burn CD image with k3b":) Bruno

Okay. I printed out the orginal boot cd info so I'll print out your extra here also. I am trying to catch up. This is what I have been getting when running the update. Yes, it is from the UpdateCD. Okay I will put "blinders" on and keep clicking "Yes" . I think my "Enter" finger is up to the challenge. :) :) Then I will do the Bootcd. :) o:) ;)

Just keep checking what you are replying Yes to . . . . . there could be an odd "Other" question you do NOT want to say Yes to . . . Like removing a package before it will upgrade o:):) Bruno

Well that could be the problem I am having now. After hitting "yes" a billion time I have no applications in my start menu . . . my drives don't work . . .Arrrh this sucks! :)
