trigggl
Yes, it's true. I'm the latest to move to current in Slackware. I upgraded completely and have some weird things going on. Namely, my Soundblaster Live isn't working just now and the alsa commands don't seem to be doing anything. I ran the sound script and here are the results: root@fangorn:/usr/sbin# ./soundchk.shsoundchk.sh v1.04 - Running Sound Configuration ChecksIdentifying SystemLinux fangorn 2.4.28 #6 Tue Dec 14 14:41:15 PST 2004 i686 unknown unknown GNU/Linuxmodel name : Celeron (Coppermine)cpu MHz : 1009.456MemTotal: 321024 kBSwapTotal: 409208 kBChecking Deviceslrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 5 2004-07-17 09:46 adsp -> adsp0crw-rw--w- 1 root sys 14, 12 2003-08-29 07:47 adsp0crw-rw--w- 1 root sys 14, 28 2003-08-29 07:47 adsp1crw-rw--w- 1 root sys 14, 44 2003-08-29 07:47 adsp2crw-rw--w- 1 root sys 14, 60 2003-08-29 07:47 adsp3lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 4 2004-07-17 09:46 dsp -> dsp0crw-rw--w- 1 root audio 14, 3 2003-08-29 07:47 dsp0crw-rw--w- 1 root audio 14, 19 2003-08-29 07:47 dsp1crw-rw--w- 1 root audio 14, 35 2003-08-29 07:47 dsp2crw-rw--w- 1 root audio 14, 51 2003-08-29 07:47 dsp3Checking Driver00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corp. 82820 820 (Camino) Chipset Host Bridge (MCH) (rev 03) Subsystem: Diamond Multimedia Systems Viper V77002:0e.0 Multimedia audio controller: Creative Labs SB Live! Bruno
Hi GregI can not see much wrong in that output of the script . . . and SB is one of the best supported cards . . . I wonder if there is anything else wrong here . . Bruno

trigggl
Geat job Greg !! . . . Wonder what is next on the list Well, next time I find a program that is a wet , I'll reinstall it.By the way, whoever came up with the phrase "wet fish" never met my Oscar. We've learned not to touch him. He goes kind of bezerk. Edited January 15, 2005 by trigggl

trigggl
Well, it's not working again. greg@fangorn:~$ artsdunix_connect: can't connect to server (unix:/tmp/mcop-greg/fangorn_sbcglobal_net-14c9-41ea0f74)Error while initializing the sound driver:device /dev/dsp can't be opened (No such device)I have visually confirmed that /dev/dsp does exist and points to /dev/dsp0. Bruno
I have visually confirmed that /dev/dsp does exist and points to /dev/dsp0. I'm confused.Hi Greg . . look at the ownership of both of them . . . are they "trigggl:users" ?? ( well, the same as the files in your /home ) . . . if it still does not work after that we might try the "arts/knotify-trick", but I have to be at my own computer ( later today ) to be able to post that one Bruno
trigggl
Well, my user account seems to be the only one not working, so perhaps the first line is a clue. I wouldn't think that any /dev object would be owned by a user. In fact, I remember it being root:audio.

Bruno
Hi Greg . . as promissed here is the arts/knotify story:If suddenly after updating your HD install your system notifications are gone, here is what you do . . as user . . not as root, so no "su" $ kwrite ~/.kde/share/config/knotifyrc That will open a file where you see text . . compaire it and make it 100% the same as: [Misc] LastConfiguredApp=KDE System Notifications [startProgress] Arts Init=true KNotify Init=true Use Arts=trueThen log out and back in and you will have sound ( I hope ! ) Bruno
trigggl
Well, I've done a number of things. I got a lead in Linuxquestions that pointed me to the KDE installed apps viewer (forgot what it's called). I looked in there and found an Alsa folder that wasn't installed right. I uninstalled it. Suddenly alsa was appearing in the swaret list. I installed that alsa file, then, reinstalled the other 3. That got my mixer working. Then I edited the file you specified with vi. The first and last options were marked "false".I didn't seem to have sound still, but it was just a case of the volume not being high enough. It looks like I'm just about there. I'll need to check eventually to see if other folders aren't completely installed. A lot of my updates were done after the hard drive ran out of memory, so I'm sure there's a few more.
