ChromeOS

Here is a link on how to create your own "almost" ChromeOS netbook. I must be bored 'cause I actually downloaded and put this on a USB stick and tried it on my netbook. Wasn't very impressed.

As it stated in the article, a lot of the Google proprietary apps are disabled but even the ones that aren't don't work very well. And why it disabled gmail is beyond me. That certainly isn't a ChromeOS app. Maybe it would work better if it was installed on the HDD instead of a USB stick but Puppy isn't anywhere near as chunky running from a stick.

What I really wanted to see was the "instant browsing" claims. I could see the purpose of having a device that could let me check my email, do minimal browsing or read my ebook, without having to wait forever for the thing to boot. That's, sans the quick booting, is pretty much what I use my tablet to do. But this doesn't boot from a stick much faster than miniPCLos does. And miniPCLos is far more powerful.

I've often been proven wrong but I really don't see the Chromebook as becoming a big hit.
