Hello Everyone, :D While I relish my Anonymity as much as the next person  ... I find it a wee bit curious that so few people have chosen to reveal anything about themselves in their Member Profile. Are a birthdate (btw... I'll wager I'm one of the oldest, so far) and some interests going to lead the Identity Nazis to your door? :D :D Judging by the highly imaginative Avatars I've seen, many of you must surely be interesting people with a wide range of avoctions. Personally, I believe it helps foster a sense of "Community" in a Forum (especially among regular participants) to read in a profile that one may have some interests in common. As Always, The Preceeding is One Man's Opinion... Your Mileage May Vary :D

Nah...you are still a spring chicken. .. errr make that spring rooster  I don't list my interests because I have only 1 - using a computer (15 forums... yada yada yada  ). But I do see your point.

Okay, okay. I'll update my profile sometime later today. I'm rather used to some non-tech forums where personal tidbits from ones profile sometimes get twisted into creative yet insulting fiction, but I don't expect that will be the case here at all.

Profile updated....Thanks for bringing that to my attention. You are right. Lets hope this board is more of a community than many of the other boards I have been a part of.

So Stryder, you're a fellow Hoosier. I'm from the NW corner by Chicago. Just joined yesterday but this looks like a very promising set of forums.A_Sr.

I have some constraints on this one (some of them dictated to me by, uh, someone else who's still promising to post here someday). But I suppose I should take your suggestion to heart, Paracelsus. Thanks for making it. I too will update my profile -- and find a way to replace my ugly avatar too!I think the avatar is the top priority, though. I mean ... dang.Unfortunately, it's my birthday soon. In case anyone's wondering, I'm about to be 45. -- Scot

Paracel, you lost, how much was that yer betting? Paypal me.I'm one of those who believes that the internet encourages granfalloons, not communities, and on the internet no one knows you're a dog (famous cartoon at Newyorker.com catoon bank, you could look it up).

Paracelsus, you really started something here, a good thing too. A sense of community is always helpful and if the people here are as helpful as on some of the other forums I belong to that will be great. But young fella if you check out my profile you will find I have been interested in electronics for longer than you have been alive. I know, us older folks are not supposed to be into the computer age but I don't know what I would do without my computer and the internet.Glad to be a member of this forum ......... Norm

OK, I updated my profile. As to Scott's Avetar, I really did try to beat it. I went to Google (of course), and entered "monsters"...nothing to trump him.So I entered "proctology"...nothing to trump him. That is ONE SMOKING AVETAR!

Yes, you are absolutely right. A community sense is very important.I had already done my profile thingey when I signed up, so I thought I would do something to update my rather unimpressive signature....but after putting in my normal Albert Einstein and Jonathan Swift quotes, I wasn't sure they would be in particularly sensitive right now when I really wish to be as supportive of our troops as possible, so I deleted them again.Back to the drawing board.

Yeah, the best piece of advice I ever got about being online was about not filling out profiles.I was 26 at the time and I worked with a guy that was my age. He had a Mac and was on AO(****) and when I bought my first computer in '97, a Gateway, he told me never to fill those profiles out because of all the porn that'll come to you as a young man. Some may enjoy that but it's not what I wanted in my mailbox. I've since learned that you research the privacy report and then either give them your real address or a junk address. A pretty universal approach I think. <_< :o Allen

WOW!!! tbird9768,From my experience... It's more often "Chat Rooms" and leaving e-mail addresses in "GuestBooks" that lead to the consequences you outline.NO ONE can get to you from a Birthdate and some Interests... To which is all I was referring. You make a valid point regarding e-m addys... and certainly, EVERYONE should maintain more than one, according to the various purposes for which they utilize the Internet/Web.Personally, I have one for Family & Friends; another for Website Registrations & Shopping/Purchase Confirmations; and yet another for Newsletters, etc.It was never my intention that this thread be construed as a portal to entice Forum Members to leave themselves open to Porn and Spam :( :(
